Where does the right to privacy ends and the need to uphold
the law begins?

Your Gmail account is not private. Should it really be since it's free?

Houston man charged with child porn possession after Google cyber-tip

    I say "go google".

I'm not certain I'd approve of google if it were a different "crime" - I don't know. When it come to abuse of children - I'd say anything goes.

But also -I think google has a right to monitor the service it provides for free in order to keep it free of illegal activity.

Well, email isn't a good indication of anything. Think of all the spam you get, including stuff made to look like it came from YOU, Google has said elsewhere that they have a process that looks for certain things to catch such photos. Many call them "fingerprints", but that is merely a way of describing a set of characteristics or patterns to determine such a thing was likely there,

They do the same sort of thing to target ads to you, etc... So where DOES it stop? As for free, they hook you into it in many ways. Look at android, shared logins, youtube, etc,,,, Saying they should be able to do this is akin to saying the water company should be able to listen to the pipes coming from your home, and install an internal regulator that may have a listening device.

Don't get me wrong, I HATE perversion, and HATE the idea of enslaving or abusing ANYONE, I just include OTHERS also! I consider childporn perverted, enslaving AND abusing, but I don't like the idea of google trampling on privacy so much.

If the company states outright that it can monitor you, and you accept those terms, how can you argue with them? If you find they are monitoring you when they have never let you know that could happen - then that is wrong. Dead wrong.

While I don't support monitoring of users in the general sense - reverse monitoring from the offense back to the user who is committing the offense is not wrong imho. Watching what everyone does someone is not told this is being done should be a sueable offense no matter who you are.

It's indeed a delicate balance. As soon as we are convinced that
taking away our freedoms will protect us and little children
we then find out that the same "protection" system can be used
against us. We want the child abusers to be caught, but we
hesitate at the method used. Does the end always justify
    the means? The aged-old question.

Same for terrorism and the NSA as well.

One emotional case is all it takes for us to all raise our hands
and say, "please spy on me, and so keep all of us safe."

I say more power to Google. If losing a little Privacy means saving the Life of an innocent Child ( or thousands) I say go for it

Frankly, I'm not worried about being spied on . I ain't got nothing to hide.

We can talk "our freedoms" till the cows come home. I'm of the belief that as adults we have an obligation to keep children safe.

This man isn't just a "looker" - he was convicted of abusing an 8 yr old boy - was taking pictures of people's children in the restaurant where he worked. How long before he had his hands on another child? I can honestly say I'm not at all concerned about protecting the freedom of a known child abuser.

I expect this is covered in the terms of service. Google ain't stupid.

How do YOU know you "have nothing to hide"? I have a gun, ammo, had a website called snoopsearch, had nails, Had fertilizer, including ammonium nitrate, HECK, my mother had stockings! At times, the police stretch such things to be NEFARIOUS! I once even considered buying a GASP, PRESSURE COOKER!

Ever see "meet the parents"? Through events that happen to MANY, a guy nearly has his life destroyed! He is looked at as a pervert because "his suitcase" has some NASTY stuff in it. It wasn't his suitcase. He is a LIAR because a guy finds out he doesn't have a record that he DOES have. The guy researching missed one detail! He ends up having to borrow clothes, and is looked at as an addict because of what is in "his pocket".

So if you think you have nothing to hide, YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!! Even if it isn't your stuff....! EVEN if it is perfectly natural..... EVEN if you know NOTHING about it..... DON'T call attention to it lest someone use it against you.

BTW WHERE were you born? WHAT is your full legal name? WHEN were you born? WHAT is your zipcode? Please enclose pictures of the three credit cards you have with the highest credit available?

HEY, YOU said you had nothing to hide!

I don't see an expectation of privacy here. Anyone who thinks their email is private and not monitored or mined is an idiot. Anything you say in an email you should be willing to shout at the top of your lungs in a crowded mall. Do otherwise and expects issues.

That said, let the guy fry if he's guilty.

Kay, that thanks is for your sig.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

First, "let him fry" is meant colloquially. Would you prefer "let him hang" or "let him rot"?

Second, what part of "if he's guilty" do you not understand? By definition, I'm pretty sure lynch mobs don't wait for jury decisions.

If anyone thinks that Gmail is private, you might ask yourself why they serve ads that are similar to things that you discuss in your gmail acct. Since they're already gathering intelligence, they might as well do some good with it by saving children from abuse and porn.

If I am going to get riled up over invasion of privacy by Google scanning emails, this case sure won't be the one I'd latch onto. Glad they nabbed a convicted pedophile who violated an 8-year-old boy. I wouldn't shed a tear over that pervert or worry about questions of justice, even if he were hanged, drawn and quartered by vigilantes.

It seems to me that they would see the pics or videos shared and track them back rather than watch what people are doing.

It's not being monitored by services that we know are monitoring us that bothers me. It's that they use any info you share to build a profile on us. If you study the sociology and what they can do with these compiled profiles it becomes very scary very rapidly. Anyone who thinks the purpose of the monitoring going on is just to catch criminals is very naive. Catching one or two, then holding them up as "look at what we did" is nothing more than PR so they can justify building those profiles and have people thinking it's a good idea. If they actually wanted to catch criminals - those people would be gone by the hundreds, not just a handful here and there.

Catch your criminals - okay - but profiles via compiling every word that is said between people - and you have yourself a perfect and infallible method to completely control a population.

Then don't use Google if you think their controlling the population. Its that simple. Everyone has that option .

Some people, if not many, would call it world domination thru genius Marketing.
I wish I had been smart enough to start a Beast like Google

I don't use google for some things. I don't use gmail other than as a huge spam folder that I empty out every time it gets too full. I never sign in other than to check my email. I also have an ap that zaps those super-cookies that websites feel the right to stuff my computer with to track everything I do online. I find it offensive to have anyone stuff MY computer with anything. Whatever you store on your computer because of my visit is my fault - but it doesn't give you the right to put crap on mine. If you want to store something on my computer, you need to pay a storage fee.

Here's the deal, google still has to play by the rules. They give you a ton of free services for your business. Who else's does that? but if they mess with your private information you could sue them in two minutes. But I agree if they do some good for a person being abused, I'm all for it.
If you have nothing to hide what's the problem.

I thought I'd test this theory by writing an email to another one of my gmail accounts last night.

I wrote "I think I've just eaten a hand grenade by accident" and sure enough James Bond called at the door 5 minutes later with the Queen holding a stun gun.
