Hi guys

Who's the best coach out there at the moment?

I have worked with quite a few different guys in the past...

It's always hard to determine who will be there to fulfill your requirements

    Dear Mr. 4 posts.

What kind of coach? A baseball coach? You'll have to be a lot more specific.

It's not Mr 4 posts. It's John Reece cleverly disguising himself Claude.

John Wooden according to ESPN. You learn something new every day, I'd have guessed Vince Lombardi.

I was going to argue that Obi Wan Kenobi was a better coach, but his only pupil ended up becoming the Dark Lord of the Sith, so in retrospect he wasn't really that good.

        Ahhhhh......
But in the end...there was still good in him. And as a ghost, he turned into a different actor.

As a proud Star Wars fan, Considered a great coach Yoda it is.

        His greatest teaching:
Do or do not... there is no try

        Also:

"If you end your training now -- if you choose the quick and easy path as Vader did -- you will become an agent of evil."

Yoda knew the master plan. Episode 1: he discouraged Obi Wan from training Anakin, yet as a sage he still let it happen. Come the original trilogy, he saw to it that Father and Son meet and fight the final confrontation of good and evil. And he prevailed. He knew that Anakin = Darth Vader, and what sweet way to end it in Return of The Jedi.

What? Yoda got the whole prophecy wrong... He thought "bring balance to the force" meant something completely different, when it literally meant balance - the same number of Sith as Jedi. If Yoda had it right, he would have said "Wait, you think this kid is the chosen one? Damn... we should just shoot his ass right here." Only he would have said it different, like "If the chosen one he is, kill him now we must."

So ... he misses the entire point of the prophecy about the chosen one, and voted for the Sith lord. Then he decides he should hide Vader's kids from him, so he sends Luke to Tatooine ... Vader's HOME FREAKING PLANET to live with his BROTHER IN LAW, and he sends Leia to a high profile politician who Vader KNEW PERSONALLY and would have interacted with on a regular basis since he was now running things. That was his master plan to hide them from Vader? Seriously? He was losing it... If Yoda lived in the United States, we'd have diagnosed him with dementia and put him in a retirement home.

Still, Yoda is the most recognizable character in the Star Wars franchise, a game changer if you will. I don't want to delve deeper into his credentials as a teacher/guru/coach but I believe he has his reasons for being a douche most of the time.

Now the question is this: Why do most coaches proceed on being a dick with their "it's for your own good" way of teaching? I adhere to the saying "no student is greater than their teacher" and the only reason I find with this method is that when the master had a teacher once, they were treated this way too. A way of getting back through their student.

                Any thoughts?

Two reasons I can think of...

The first is that as a coach, your reputation is on the line. You developed a system that YOU know works. Some of those steps seem tedious, but they're there for a reason. When people want to skip steps that don't seem critical to them, then fail, they will stand on the mountain top and shout "RICK RODD'S COACHING DOESNT WORK, I DID EVERYTHING HE SAID" even though they didn't. So coaches kind of have to take that "Everything is here for a reason, just do what I said" attitude.

That's one reason... the second reason is because the model that worked for that coach may be the only model they know. In a space like IM, there's no "correct way" ... If I wanted to learn how to be a welder, or a banker, or how to paint cars, there is a formal training process. There's only one right way, and a million wrong ways. Teaching someone the right way to paint a car or balance a checkbook is like teaching them a recipe - if you do it THIS WAY, you will get THIS RESULT every single time.

IM doesn't have that - there is no formal training, no "right way", it all varies based on what you're doing and who you have the ability to reach. The end result (success) isn't achieved by following a recipe specific to that result.. there's no "right way to do CPA" or "right way to email your list". It's different for everyone, and always encompasses a ton of other things that probably feel unnecessary to someone just learning.

Here's an example; A site I run does about $7.5m a year. I could tell you EXACTLY what I do and what's going on in the background to achieve that number, but even if you followed that "recipe" to the letter you wouldn't have the same results. Why? Because those things are only possible because of other things that were done in the past. I already have an audience of millions of customers - that audience took nearly a decade to build, along years of building relationships with suppliers, ongoing engagement of the customers, etc. If I was going to coach you how to do the exact same thing from scratch, you wouldn't be able to just jump in and do what I'm doing right now, because you don't have that background that makes what I'm doing right now WORK. You don't have those relationships with suppliers that were only achieved by visiting them at tradeshows and events multiple times over the years. You don't have the customer base to give you enough analytics to know how to increase average order values and engagement.

I can give you the recipe, but you don't have any of the ingredients. So, assuming I was going to teach you how to do the same thing, I would have you doing a lot of things that didn't produce an immediate result. You'd be going to trade shows, shaking hands with people, and never try to sell them something or get their business - and in a lot of cases you won't even want it. What you're really doing is building a RELATIONSHIP - because even though it will feel like a complete waste of time, people want to do business with people they LIKE. And at some point they're either going to need what you have, you're going to need what they have, or they're going to have a conversation with someone you've never even met and say to that person, "You know what, this sounds like it's right up Rick Rodd's alley. I've known him for a few years now, smart guy."

Now would anyone with common sense deliberately set out to build a business this way? No ... of course not. All of those relationships had nothing at all to do with the business I'm in now, I was doing something completely different back when I met those people. But having those contacts BENEFITS the business I'm running now. When you're seeking the guidance of someone who's "made it", all they know how to teach you is how THEY did it, so the "it's for your own good" style, where the tasks seem tedious, pointless, and don't produce an immediate outcome, really are for your own good in a way.

Skills can be learned, but you can't "learn knowledge". Knowledge is "collected".

Stallone did well training Travolta for "Staying Alive".

I do quite well coaching people to hire Claude, or Mark Hendricks.

    For football, I'd say Harbaugh.

People are different so no one "coach" will be the best for everybody.

I do think Mr Miyagi is somewhere at the top of the list though. He teach when you don't even know you're being taught.... wax on, wax off.
