Sitting all day long on my desk and feeling some serious back pain

Hi, I am in IM for almost 5 years now and sitting almost 10 hours a day. I don't do any sort of exercise. Now I am feeling lower back pain. What should I do now? Any guide line? Anyone experienced this?

Thanks

That's a predicament you've got there. Try sitting on your chair this time. Sitting on desks could surely lead to back pain.

Forgive me talking bluntly but if you sit down for the majority of your day, do no exercise and presumably relax in your spare time you're not working, you can expect a bit of back pain. Try seeing a doctor or back specialist and do some daily stretching. Go for a jog every other day or something.

You've probably just pulled a muscle from lack of exercise or stretching etc. Having said that you don't want to have a successful business if you cripple yourself at the same time. Bit of balance needed here. All work and no play made jack a dull boy, probably the same without exercise too.

Who would have thought this business should come with a back injury warning though?

Normally I'm at my desk for around the same length of time but I often go out into the car park and chase pigeons and attempt the odd back flip, so that helps.

And I was only joking about in my second post, not being rude or anything. I just had visions of you sitting on your desk and it made me chuckle.

I hope your back gets better and for the record I had a bad back not long ago but started to do a bit of yoga and it's not been back since, so stretching definitely helps.

Set a timer that goes off every 30-60 minutes. When it goes off, get up and stretch. Set a second timer to go off every 3-4 hours. Go take a walk.

This will help with your back and also give your brain a chance to relax. You will be amazed at how many aha moments you will have just by taking these short breaks.

    This is what I'm saying:

Why I Switched My Office Chair with an Exercise Ball (and What It's Like)

If it's inevitable to leave infront your computer, you could do basic exercise with this. And have small dumbbells handy by your side.

Wouldn't matter if you get rich if you fail to take care of your health.

Don't always sit on your desk. After every hour get up from your desk and take a small walk for about one to two minutes.

That's it, that's your problem. Get a chair. No wonder your backs out sitting on your desk for ten hours a day.

The important thing is that you should have a ergonomically designed chair. The thumbrule is to keep your back curved inwards at all times. The outwards curve while sitting in a badly designed chair or slouching on the sofa is bad for the spinal discs and weakens the back muscles. The key point to note is that the most cushioned or comfortable of chairs does not mean that they would be as ergonomically good for the back.

Try doing yoga or exercises which help strengthen the back muscles and consciously try to keep the natural S shape for the back.. while sitting, standing etc.

Exercise regularly. By the way, your stomach muscles also need strengthened and that helps stop back pain. If the pain persists, you need to see your doctor to check out any spinal deterioration and possible need for attending therapy before joining a gym if you have no exercise equipment at home.

Totally second AprilCT's advice. Do NOT just join Gym right away. lifting weights or even running on treadmill with a bad back may result in further deterioration. Consult a physical therapist or a consultant first. Most probably they will also recommend an X-ray or CT scan.
