In 20 years from now, will there be any jobs?

More and more, I'm seeing entire corporations close down because of the internet, and because of people like us who like to do business online.

Borders closed down, books will eventually go ENTIRELY digital, coupons are going digital, money is going digital, stores are going digital - no need for baggers, cashiers.

Was there ever a time in history where there was just merchants and no workers? Is this possible?

No jobs 20 years from now, the majority of people out of work and hungry, the rich people
automating there businesses with robots and technology.

While a think a lot of jobs are being automated or sent over seas for cheap labor, there will always be jobs out there - just more in the service industries ... food, health, personal care, janitorial, etc.

There are still a lot of people that hold on to doing business face-to-face and even more importantly building a relationship before doing business. Even in the Jetsons they still had jobs.

You got a point there, 20 years from now, it would be possible to have that kind of world, and I could say that would be our worst nightmare.

You'll also be able to watch the head robot yelling at his mini me's. "Chuck step on it we got a ponderosa burger to email". Oh, he will have a NY accent too.

So . . . when the "jobs" are few and far between and the population continues to grow - but is poorer - who buys the merchandise?

Reminds me of the song about going round in circles. . . .

I think thats where we are headed!

BUT ... by that time there will be a lot more of us! .. (the good people)

The people who struggled A LOT in their life and for generations - and finally became really wealthy because of the internet.

There will be a very high number of this type of successful people - and they are here to help the world and make it a better place.

Only the bad rich people who will do no good for others because of greed, are the ones who would do such things.

Is not only about making a lot of money - is also about sharing a lot of money for one cause that affects ALL OF US! ..

So I think the future has a lot of potential!

    just my 2cents...

    great topic btw!

I disagree that there will be no jobs for humans.

Certainly the landscape is changing, but how do you think people are going to exist otherwise?

They will work for their upkeep. It may not be called a "job" at that time, but the impact will be the same - humans will be doing something to care for their families, pay bills, and make purchases.

50% of the jobs that will exist in 5 years don't exist today . . . thanks to technology, research, and specialization. So you might not be able to say "In 20 years I'll be working at _______________," but I can assure you, there will be something to do.

20 years is really a drop in the bucket and will be here before you know it.

In 20 years, jobs will all be done by freelancers
Everyone will work anywhere they want.
Work life balance will be a priority
Humans and computer will always need to work
    together.

First of all, I would like to remind you that the printed book is better than e-book. Many user buy e-book, then print on paper. So the traditional business will decrease gradually, but there is no chance to vanish the business.

There will definitely be jobs. You might have to go back to college though. We still will need:

    1) Cops

    2) Nurses/Doctors/etc

    3) Divorce Attorneys

Get a degree in anyone of these fields... man you just strike it rich.

There was a retired cop on 20/20 whose pension is over $100,000 a year. Guy is from New York. I forgot how he said he got that large of a pension, but had it been me.... you wouldn't have even known i existed.

    Bigfoot,

I would definitely have to say that this world is definitely getting crazier by the day. It comes down to innovation. It's crazy because technology is currently shaping our world faster than ever before. This is the first time such a dramatic shift is taking place. I laugh because every few years, the technology I saw in a science-fiction movie suddenly makes it way into the real world.

You see this happening all the time. For example, all of the Google Glass, wearable technology. You can get a good idea where the real world is headed in terms of technology in a few years by watching today's science-fiction movies. Will there come a day when everything is automated entirely by robots? Who knows, lol! However, the only limitation is the current state of technology, which is advancing at a mind-blowing rate.

DId you know there are actually experiments going on right now that involve combining animal traits with humans. For example, they're literally creating and testing real ways to give people (soldiers) the ability to see at night like certain animals can. However, that is just the tip of the ice berg. I just looked it up -- it's called trans-humanism. Very crazy stuff -- that's happening RIGHT NOW.

They have been saying things like that for the past 20 plus years and even longer." One day computers will do everything." A lot of manual jobs in manufacturing won't require as many workers. How ever other fields will open up. Just have to re invent your self and keep ahead of changes.

There will be far more jobs in 20 years, in large part because of computers. Computers did not decrease paperwork, for example, it has increased the volume of paper used for documentation. So likewise, computing has made the accumulation and storage of new knowledge much easier, faster, and more efficient. This means the amount of specialization of information is exploding upwards, and requires a larger volume of expert workers to utilize and manage it. In other words, the increased volume and exchange of information leads to a larger labor force.

Also, computing and decentralized digital communications are creating increased freedom from the bottleneck institutions in society that have tended to often inhibit economic growth, such as nation states (most of them unfree, hyper-taxing entities) and banks (who try to encumber everybody in debt and get a cut of everybody's earnings). Through the web, peer networks, crypto currency and other developments, the strangleholds on economic progress are being bypassed, thus opening the way for more work and business opportunities. While adjustments will have to be made, the future looks more open to jobs, not less.

You guys are DREAMING! The idiots that made that video are telling a LOT of lies and over simplifying. There will ALWAYS be jobs. The question is WHAT they will be and HOW many there will be. BTW computers can NOT fix themselves, or determine if they have a problem or design themselves or even make the machines to make them.

If corporations are more and more going online then they will probably need more affilates and agents to drive business. What luck, were here.

That caused a collapse and they did a lot of STUPID things that just made it WORSE! Outside of those two periods, it shows that we are now in a situation at least as bad as any other. And DON'T FORGET! As time passes, the lowest level dynamic has gotten WORSE! SO, if we normalized it, we may NOW be in worse shape than we were in the 1930s!
