6.0 EarthQuake Here - No. CA's baddest in 25 years!

I survived the baddest 6.0 quake of 2014! i am @ less than 7 miles from the epicenter.

Wow it was loud and violent! really shocking!

There's been over 30 aftershocks they say but i haven't felt maybe 1 or 2 - ... the best part is the more time that goes on the less is the chance it was a precursor to something bigger - and not the 'main event'. yeah it's a small percent now under 20%

So blessed no real damage like so many that were closer to epicenter. Really sad wineries and historic buildings that are red tagged right now in a couple of different towns around the region. Going to cost the people $1 billion so far. No fatalities though (I don't think) and only 200 hurt most not seriously. It was really early in the morning (in the middle of the night so not many people were on the streets to get bricks rained on them).

I am surrounded by faults that haven't gone off in 100 years etc - and this one was one nobody worried about or even really knew about. helllloooo!?! It's true it really wasn't as serious as if one of the other bigger faults goes off (everybody is just 'expecting' that someday but hope it isn't in their lifetime LOL).

Who cares about the damage . . that's nature and you wont stop it. More importantly there were no deaths, and of course you're fine. The OTF needs you Patricia!!

Glad to hear you did not have any real damage! I used to live in Vallejo and I understand they got hit pretty hard.

    Cheers

Yeah but not as bad as Napa! Right at their harvest - ... and it's not like the drought isn't already killing them. Either way it really hurts when it is historic buildings which both towns it seems like that is the majority
of the damage - I just hope they can save them...

I hope that us humans become better at predicting earthquakes.

Nice there were no fatalities. I can't figure out why buildings in that area aren't being shored up to withstand extreme quakes. It's an area known for them - and for possibilities of even bigger ones. Time to quake proof the place as much as possible.

I STILL don't think it was as bad as the northridge earthquake:

The Northridge Earthquake: 20 Years Ago Today - In Focus - The Atlantic

And I, and MANY others, think this was MUCH bigger. I was lucky to be in a MASSIVELY built building but literally EVERY building around it was DEMOLISHED! I had a friend that actually helped save a lot of people in a building. He went to sleep on the third floor and wookup in like the second. The second floor basically collapsed.

BTW a number of people diead in the northridge quake. One police officer became famous as apparently the first to die. He went down a freeway and a whole chunk dissappeared right before he drove over it.

Steve - I guess the 25 years is for Northern California since our last bad one was 1989 for Loma Prieta. (because I know Northridge was really horrible -much more serious with multiple deaths - but it's Southern Calif) (the OTHER California - LOL)

Sal - One building right now they are watching and may tear down is a very old brick church - the bell tower - is listing - and it was retrofitted after the 1989 quake. So either somebody didn't do their job or something was not done to the extent necessary to make it safe.

Big after shock (3.9) this morning - a whole series but that was biggest and woke me up out of my chair which is in front of a plate glass window! Yup time to go to bed already...

Hmmm, classic example of Man Made Global Warming, at its worst!

No,....wait, that is in 10 years time, when our ocean depths are boiling?

Which they should be anyway being up to 7 miles down, 4 miles down on land reaches tropical temp ranges?

But yeah, in all seriousness, earthquakes can be fun, but at the same time nasty.

I live about 3.5 km's from one episentre, which is directly over a shopping centre!

So, when that went and made the papers, basically the whole house was rocking including ceiling lanps.

But its the background noise which is the coolest part.

I also heard it in bed, and only heard the trees leaves being shaken all at once, and a dull humm dissipate in the distance.

Thankfully AU, Vic only gets small. fun ones, the other side of Melbourne got none of it!

      Poor sods!

I was woken up at 3:25 by the quake. I started timing it and when it ended after about 10 seconds I checked online to see how big and where it was centered. Couldn't find any info then. Went back to sleep and found out it was a 6.1 and in Napa. That was surprising. Glad you are ok Pat.

Wow Tim and you live at least 100 miles away, South, and across the Bay - I think you are the farthest away I have heard that it was felt. I agree it was about 10 seconds.

Pretty scary that it 'reverberates' so far away - this was not a rocking roller like Loma Prieta - it was a violent jolt and then sideways movement.

A picture flew off my wall, a flower pot flew off a pile of stuff in my store room and shattered , and my TV monitor was hanging off the table by the UDMI cable! Lucky I saved him from pushing up daisies.

The wierdest part was it knocked over a full 1L bottle of water in the refrigerator door but left a ketchup bottle (standing on it's stem upside down) unmoved.

Glad you're OK, Pat. I assume you were sleeping when it hit. What's it like to be awoken by an earthquake?

Yes - sound asleep - it's not bad actually because you are 'half-asleep' so it dulls the terror a little - plus they said staying in bed is a good place (if you cover your head with a pillow) and as long as nothing can fall on you.

The problem was going back to sleep! LOL.

WOW! One of my biggest fears in life. You feel so helpless when
the earth beneath you begins to shake. My biggest one came when
I was boy in the Caribbean Tuesday, October 8 1974 5:50 AM.
It was 7.5 and woke up the whole family. No loss of life but many
    old stone buildings were damaged.

    Glad you are safe.
