Happy Birthday Canada!

I was just watching a forensic show and I know it was in Canada because of the way all the people say 'O' - (the only accent I ever detect)

...anyway, they kept talking about the 'Crown' charging this guy - There is a Queen or King of Canada? What 'Crown' are they talking?

American dummy girl.

From what I understand, it is the queen of ENGLAND! She appoints one known as the "governer general", and HE basically rules canada like the queen would. He serves at "her pleasure", but has a KIND of term(generally 5 years), and otherwise, the government is kind of similar to great britain. That is to say that the governer general DOES carry weight, but it is ALSO limited. Of course, I just quickly looked this up earlier, and my response is MEANT to be overly simplistic, but I think that is right.

And the canadian accent is kind of like a lot of boston ones are now. You can REALLY tell only with certain things. Of course, the dialect is a bit different and there may be different word choices.

OH, and a belated happy birthday!

The GG's role is largely symbolic and only has meaning is special circumstances. The role still exists simply because we haven't formally separated and become a republic like many of us want.

Canadian accents are as regional as in the U.S. The stereotypes are mostly in Ontario and the maritimes. Language and spelling is like in the UK but with U.S. programming dominating television that's shifting. Attitudes and politics are literally different from province to province, getting this place united about anything is a miracle. O Canada!

Much the same can be said of ENGLAND! Most monoarchies I have heard of are ones that are mainly just traditional. You hear a LOT about the queen of england, but does she REALLY meddle with the government, etc? She probably does LESS in england than the president does in the US. That is not to denigrate her, it's BETTER that way. HEY, the SAME is true of the queen of denmark.

Yeah, and even in the US they are disappearing. I think, as you implied, that its origins began with widely received TV programming. I mean RADIO was somewhat boring and even THAT was often fairly local. TV is now addicting and a program in Hollywood may be seen by the most remote areas. Even when I was a little kid, programs were LOCAL! TODAY, only a few shows on some TV stations and some cable spots are local. OTHERS AREN'T! HEY, we EVEN get canadian programming, and several "American" stars are canadian.

As for attitudes and politics, some say that the civil war in the US started because of a difference in economies, with the south being more agrarian. MANY things are only now really getting automated. Of course, does it REALLY matter? The north was obviously serious. The south ended up surviving, though FEW really can have that lifestyle anymore.
