This guy's flight was diverted after he got in an argument with the lady in front of him for reclining her seat. He had blocked her from reclining with a gadget, and it boiled over.

Recline rancor: Passenger recalls seat dispute - Houston Chronicle

So, what's the deal? Do you recline when you fly?

The seats in most, if not all, US airlines are "designed" by a blithering IDIOT! The button is on the side of a SMALL seat. As small as it is, your outer thighs must be approx 4" narrower. What if they aren't? You have the LIKELIHOOD that you will hit the side, and trigger the recline.

SO, I am often asked to put my seat up for landing NOT because I put it down, but because my waist is bigger that the maybe 38"-40" MAXIMUM. I NEVER intentionally recline. If there is to be a suit, it should be against the AIRLINES! There is only BARELY enough leg room in the biggest exit row seats. Of course FIRST CLASS often has enough leg room, but even IT is sometimes still too narrow.. 3 times I almost had my laptop, while partially CLOSED, since I am always careful, DESTROYED by an INTENTIONAL recliner. Sometimes I have had my KNEES almost hurt by the recliner. Sometimes the "attendants" hit my legs with the too large carts! If I get pushed too far, or too fast, I MAY push back. If so, the person in front of me will NOT be very happy.

A second flight was diverted within a week due to a reclined seat incident, but this second one did not involve the use of a Knee Defender™.

With the minimal amount of "recline" offered, why don't the design the seats to recline like wall hugger recliners? The chair back would no longer infringe on the person behind you. You would, however, lose leg room, but it be your choice and the only person bothered would be yourself.

Taller people, like me, would likely end up with broken legs, and sue the airlines BIG TIME! The problem is NOT the recline!!!!!!! The problem is the SPACE! The recline is bad because it eats up the space in front of you. The SAME space used by the legs. Of course, the seats DON'T recline forward, and in a seated position the abdomen is 2' behind the legs. This means that a shift of 2' in the top of the seat is a major annoyance and can destroy your laptop and maybe damage your knees. A shift in the position of the seat could leave you a paraplegic!

ANOTHER thing, HOW do you recline if the person in front of you does not?

Like I said, the decision would be yours and it wouldn't affect the person behind you. In fact, it might provide them a little extra leg room. The mechanism would be on a pivot and would push forward a couple inches (roughly the equivalent the recline available now).

If it were designed that it offered a smidge of extra leg room, we go from a scenario where it's an insult to recline to one where it's an insult not to recline, much less of an issue in my opinion.

However, I haven't worked out the tray design on the back of the seat, but I assume that would be a minor detail to flesh out.

Personally there's nothing nicer than sitting on a long haul flight, glass of red wine in hand, watching Jumanji for the 4th time with the screen so close to your face your nose keeps smudging it.

Yes I know, I could recline my seat but I really enjoy drinking my wine sitting upright.

    Nope, NEVER ! Honestly

I hate it when people do it to me so I refuse to do it to others
