OK, they said that people had to remember that 9+6=15. Not exactly true, BUT.....

They said the kids were never taught WHY. OK, that is fair. There is a LOT of stuff I never found out ****WHY****! DECADES later, even with the internet, I STILL don't know WHY. Does ANYONE? I DOUBT IT!

OK, fair enough. It is the SIMPLEST concept in common core that I have seen explained in the simplest way. I could do it in a more flexible way than they did in LESS time! HECK, I could use the extra time to teach the ENTIRE TIMES TABLE for nine up to TEN! Want to see? OK!

We use base ten, so if a given position goes past 9 it changes to zero, and flips the next number:

1-9
10
11-19
20
...
91-99
100

SO 9+6 could be expressed as 16-1, or 15! 9+1 is 10, of course, 9+2=11, etc...

OK, done teaching y9+x!

With times tables? Anything times 0=0 Anything times 1= the other number, so 15x1=15.
2 to 9 could be expressed as (9-y) for the tens followed by y where y=10-x
9*2=18 x=2 y=8 (9-8)=1 y=8
9*8=72 x=8 y=2 (9-2)=7 y=2
9*9=81 x=9 y=1 (9-1)=8 y=1

That's all the times tables for 9. Once you recognize the pattern, it is simple and quick.

NOW, WHY is 10+5=15? You just have to try it out and convince yourself. WHY is 9*9=81? DITTO!
Why do most healthy people have ten fingers and ten toes? In my defense, THEY never answered those questions EITHER!

      How stupid is common core?
Kids aren't comfortable with 9+6 unless their friend 10 is involved?

LMAO, that OP video is more confusing than just doing the addition & skipping all the nonsense.

Eh, personally, I prefer anything from 10 from 6.

My son had moved into an off campus apartment with couple friends and they got their phone hooked up (before cell phones).

My son called laughing hysterically - saying "I want to give you our new number and you aren't going to believe this...it's 523-6969". He didn't complain about not understanding it....

I don't get the "why" stuff with simple math. You put down 6 toothpicks and you add 9 toothpicks....and you count them and that's 15. Where's the problem? Then you start moving them around and realize how many combinations lead to 15. Kids learn it fast that way - guess that's why we don't teach it that way any more....

Yeah, they NEVER taught the WHY! Not even toothpicks do. They simply said the same thing they all did. That is just the way it is. Logically, things should boil down to one number, and that should be the sole answer to a problem. Even if you ask the freezing point of water, and one says 0c, and another 32f, c and f could be said to be units(OKAY, it is really a scale, but each part of the scale represents a relative unit), and the actual number is the same, So BOTH are correct values. So you would think only one answer would be fully correct. That is kind of a HALLMARK of math.

SO, people are the way they are "JUST BECAUSE THAT IS THE WAY IT IS". NEVER MIND that we have MANY MANY MANY researchers asking the same age old question, and several religions claiming to know more, but still not THE answer,

But if school taught all the whys and all the variants, there would be nothing left for others to do. That was never their job.

I prefer 46 & 2 but I can't play the actual Tool tune here because they file DMCA's as fast as someone uploads the song. No worries though...

Even a bunch of metal playing school kids can figure out 46 & 2. In-fact these kids knock it out of the park and score an A+, non-common score style. The lead singer Kala is only 11 years old --> amazing! Let the song roll a bit and you will hear her doing a phenomenal job on the vocals. To say Adam O'Keefe does an awesome job with his kids is a huge understatement.
