BIG Lifestyle Change - this is hard!

I'm moving in the next 2-5 months. Not just moving - but moving in with family and divesting myself of 95% of what I own.

My son and daughter-in-law have been asking me to move in with them for some time. They have a large house on 10 acres, pets are welcome and I'd have time with my Grandson before he leaves for college next year.

Now that I'm not working, no reason not to move. I can stay with them and have my own choice of room and bath and an office of my own, too. I'll have time to decide whether to buy or build or permanently live with family. We all get along great so no problem there. It would be the easiest lifestyle I've had in years.

What's hard? Getting rid of my stuff! I spent 10 minutes talking myself into putting 2 duvet covers into the "donation box". I haven't used them for 5 years - don't need them but it was hard to let go. Weird!

The big furniture - not a problem letting go of it. It's the small things I've picked up here and there that I seem to have "pack rat" mentality about.

Plan is for me to divest myself of about 95% of what I own. I don't need freezers, my lovely front load washer/dryer, my tools and garden implements, my furniture. I'm even getting rid of my acoustic piano though the electronic will go with me.

Gracie will love it - she'll have two big friendly dogs to play with and wide open space to run in and a pet door just like she's used to. The cats will go along, too, - not sure how well they will fit in but we'll see.

I think it's going to take me several passes through each room before I get rid of as much stuff as I need to leave behind. When I'm done- there may be a book in this!

Kay, since you aren't sure if this will be a permanent move, why don't you store some of the small stuff in a storage unit?

Dan may have a good idea there. I have some in-laws with relatives whose parents lost their home. They all got along great until they moved in together. It's not like they don't still get along, they do, but neither the parents nor the kids like it as much as they thought they would. It might be wise to keep some things in storage until you see how it all shakes out.

Having said that, good luck! I wish you only the best.

I might end up doing that - and they have storage space if I want to use it. Going to get rid of all the large pieces - replacing furniture isn't a big deal as I'm not the picky sort. I'm learning I'm a bit attached to some of my smaller things - more than I realized.

We've lived together before so I know that part is not a problem. I lived with my son for a year when I moved here. My son and daughter-in-law lived with me later for a year while building their house here. He stayed with me months at a time while still flying missions from here but after relocating to Ohio.

I don't have to move but I do miss being around family. They don't need me to move in but we have a lot of fun when we're together. If it's "too much" after a while I have the ability to buy or rent a home up there if I choose to.

If I were moving out of necessity I'd be worried - but this is a choice so I'm excited about it.

"Hard to downsize" - so true. Right now I'm on the "if you haven't used it for 2 years you don't need it" theory and it's working". I think I'll have to go back through the house (and the garage!) with a "one year" and then "six month" plan, too. I have no idea how - or why - I accumulated so much crap!

It's hard to downsize Kay. I have had to do it a few times in the past. Drastically. Good luck in your new life with the family. That part sounds great!

Sounds like a great arrangement then, Kay. I just wouldn't be in a hurry to get rid of things that have meaning to you. Once they're gone you can't get them back. Furniture, yeah, it's replaceable, sell it or donate it, but it sounds like you'd regret getting rid of some of the stuff.

If it were me I would prefer a couple of rooms to call my own, a bedroom and living room, nothing big or fancy, just a little self contained area for a bit of privacy now and again. My own space within theirs. Sounds like you have most of that?

Yes, I'd have that. The house has lots of space and they are very busy so I'd be there alone a big part of the time. Also the potential of building a guest house or buying my own place if that's what I want later.

It gets me to the area where I want to live next - and gives me a break, too.

I love to cook - they have a gourmet kitchen. I don't like housework - they have a cleaning lady 2x a week. Sounds like a vacation to me

Kay, it sounds like a great new adventure! I wish you so much happiness!

The stuff you want to keep, what's the difference between 2 years and just one more? If it fits in storage, then, perhaps, store it?

You are making a huge, life changing move right now, why add "getting rid of the small important things" in the mix? Maybe a list you can look at, or gosh, with today's technology, a whole file on your computer with pics of everything you're not sure of.

Then, when you're ready, go through the pics and decide. This also enables you to show others which items you are willing to part with. Perhaps other family members will want them?

Anyhow, just a thought or two.

I have things that I should have gotten rid of years and years ago but somehow can't part with. They sit in a box (several actually), but it makes my heart soar knowing they're there and still with me.

Much luck to you and your critters!!! Sounds so fun!

It sound wonderful, Kay! You've worked hard and deserve this kind of break.

As far as downsizing.........It's only hard the first time. Things are just things and once you throw out (donate/sell) a lot of stuff you thought you were attached to, stuff becomes expendable in your mind (as it should be), and you will find the "packrat" syndrome we in this society generally suffer from goes away real fast. The exception, of course, is family heirlooms and gifts.

Put things that can't be replaced, or that have more than just general meaning to you in storage. I have a unit that is only $25 bucks a month. I've got all my kitchen stuff, because with 4 sets of dishes, 2 sets of crystal, half of which are family heirloom and half I got when I lived in Germany, about 40 pounds of utensils, 3 large boxes of pans, electrical appliances, I'd never be able to replace a lot of it - and it would be a fortune to replace the other gadgets and they will be needed when I entertain.

Other than the kitchen, I've got very little that I consider too important to get rid of, and it's all family stuff that my niece and nephew will get when I'm gone.

It will amaze you how "free" you will feel when you detach yourself from your things. It's hard to understand the strength of that attachment until you break it.

Enjoy your "sabbatical". If you find life a little cramped living with the kids, it will be easy for you to slip into one of those "little houses" you like without a whole household of stuff to figure out where to stash.

Moving from the Gulf Coast in Mississippi to Oxford, Ohio - southern Ohio just North of Cincinnati.

      Oxford OH College Town lifestyle

This is where I grew up and I have lots of friends and relatives there. Oxford is home to Miami University - Robert Frost once said that Miami University is "the most beautiful campus that ever was." Also there is Hueston Woods State Park - 3000 acres of natural woods and trails and a lovely lake.

Sal - I thought of you when I decided to do this. I've been in awe for years of your ability to pack up and move. I think you posted once about taking only what you could get in your car and I was amazed. Of course, by the time I get my pets in my SUV - I need a bigger car!

I've come to much the same decision - cookware and dinnerware, silver and small special appliances are going with me to be stored. There are a few antiques I need to sell - I never wanted them anyway but they were passed on to me. I've already given my sons the pieces they wanted so I'm dumping the rest.

I'm already feeling lighter today as I was able to fill 4 bags and 2 boxes with stuff to donate - and my trash cans are totally full!

Bring your winter coats if you have any. If not, you will need winter clothes! It gets cold up this way.

If you have any doubt at all about something, Kay, pack it with you. It's so much easier to make your mind up later than regret any decision that was too hasty.

I've been downsizing stuff (donating, recycling, giving away, putting out for pickup) for a long time. The whole problem is I don't seem to be getting anywhere and we've got another big load getting ready for the trip to the recycle station and a lot of bags started for donating. We were, but not now, pack rats! I learned a long time ago not to just throw things out. Lack of a receipt for something cost me quite a bit on a recall.

Cleaning out is really hard. Fortunately, I'm not in any hurry, but maybe that is what is taking so long?

Best of luck to you moving and down sizing. It really sounds like you will be enjoying it. Just get yourself ready for winter weather and get winter tires for your SUV.

              Yes, Kay. Yes, you are.

However - you will also be dangerously close to their wives, and that's checkmate.

As far as "with just what fits in my rig" -- I can fit a lot of stuff in that jeep. I also always keep a storage unit, so I'm not "completely" minimized. In the next few years I'm thinking of putting roots in a "forever" home. Just haven't gotten to that stage yet. I can be "rooted" forever later. Right now while I'm still young enough to really get out there and do what I want with nothing to restrict me, I'm going to enjoy it.

@Kay, congrats on your decision to move! Yes, deciding what to keep and what to toss (or donate) isn't easy, but it sounds like you're making good progress. Set two or three boxes aside for those items on which you're still debating; you know, the ones that you think you should get rid of but something in you says "but I'm just not sure...". That way you're not wasting time getting stuck on those items for now. Come back to them later when you've gone through the rest and they're all that's left. Then go through them again; you'll have more clarity at that point and it'll also be easier to part with the things you really don't want or need.

Although I hate moving, the one thing I do like about it is that it forces you to go through stuff and get rid of things you don't really need. Feeling lighter and starting fresh in a new place is always a good feeling!

10 acres of land, gourmet kitchen, plenty of space of your own, and family you enjoy - sounds wonderful! I'm happy for you!

Because you are not sure how it will work out, I think the suggestion to store some of the stuff you are reluctant to part with might not be a bad idea. I wish you all the best with your move -

The clearing out is getting easier each day. If in doubt I move on to the next closet or cabinet and by the time I go back I'm usually ready to make decisions.

I kept at it this weekend (though at a slower pace) and it's goinw faster than I planned.

One thing - as I get into nooks and crannies I haven't looked at for a while I'm discovering a herd of dust elephants and dirt bunnies live here. I will never be a domestic diva - but it was not a goal anyway

According to the Farmer's Almanac it is supposed to be a hard winter. They predicted that last year and they were right. We literally went from having our air conditioning on one day to turning on the furnace the next.

Sounds like typical florida. Last year for a few months it was AC by day and heat by night.

The hotel I manage is at 8500 feet in Colorado. A few guests from hot states like Florida and Kansas and Texas freak out when they don't see air conditioning in our rooms. Low humidity and Summers we are usually in the 80's during the day and 40s or 50s at night - so we don't really need AC at all.

It seemed hot here one day this summer. Weather dot com said it was 86 and felt like 93.

Snowfall here was pretty much December until June (at the 10000 foot level anyway). Great ski season and not terrible stupid cold spells like the Artic vortex states. But a long winter and no real Spring.
One day it's still pretty cold and the next it's time to plant the flowers. Never did get the bicycles ready.

Already getting into the 20's and 30's for the overnight low temps.

Not 100% no bugs - but very, very small amounts and not many nasty ones at all.
I have an ant trap near where we serve breakfast and have only sprayed once so
far this whole year - that was for ants in one room.

We do have mosquitos, ants, flies, some bees and wasps, beetles, harmless spiders,
and rare sightings of black widows and brown recluse.

The lack of bugs and snakes and the cooler temps/low humidity are my other reasons
for loving Colorado. Mountain beauty being my main reason.

                    Don't forget the miller moths.

I'm also at about 8500 ft. It's cooler up here than in Denver. I think our Colorado weather is the most underrated thing about living here. For about 7 months of the year, Denver's weather is identical to LA's.

Because of the altitude, we do get extremes. We have something like 26 thaws and 26 freezes a year. If it snows one day, it will warm up and melt the next, unlike the upper midwest where if they get 2 inches of snow in November, that same two inches of snow is still on the ground in March (with more piled on).

We also get more sunshine than any other state. When I go back east or down south, it just seems hazy and gloomy to me. I may miss the big, blue, sunny skies of the west more than anything when I'm not here.

BTW, we had our first snow a few days ago...just a little dusting. Warmed back up to the 70s the next day.

Almost time for the aspen to change.

On another note, I have a small wooden porch/deck that leads to my front door that needed to be stained. A few weeks ago, it was stained. I wake up the next day and there's bear paw prints all in the new stain. Damn thing was 6 inches from my front door.

It's only tough for a little while - getting rid of stuff that has accumulated. I did it too and after awhile, I felt unencumbered. The only household thing I wanted to bring was my china. After a couple of years in the attic, because I did not bring my china cupboard, I brought it out and divided it amongst my children and got rid of it too. My dogs and cat came along though, needless to say.

Hiram is a DIII school, so it can't offer athletic scholarships. I played baseball my freshman year, but "retired" due to knee issues. The scholarship, however, was academic.

    How exciting, Kay, congrats!

I knew you had a big decision to make and in all honesty, this crossed my mind, so it doesn't come as a complete surprise to me. I am, however, glad that you are moving away from the coastline and getting out of harms way, never having to wonder or worry what's coming your way.

Just the other day, I was thinking what it would be like to have my Mom here, living with me. She passed in the early '90's, but a day doesn't go by that I don't think of her. Your son, daughter-in-law and grandson are very fortunate to have you in their lives. I'm sure many more happy memories are about to be made!

Are you prepared for the snow and colder climate? I think this year is going to be another brutal winter as was last year. I've got a fire burning right now. Has Gracie even seen snow before? That otta be a hoot!!!

When you figure out how to part with all that stuff, will ya please let me know the secret?! I have been going through my stuff, mentally, and I'm overwhelmed at just how much I have and need to get rid of. Yes, I'm planning a move, but no decisions just yet.

As for Claude and Riffle, heck, just think of the fun you all would have if you got together.

All the best to you in your new endeavours/adventures!
