All right, we've been sitting here with our naked palms hanging in the breeze and Tim has disappeared. Did he just use our innocent palms for his own base impulses? Is he even now trolling other forums for willing palm victims? Is anyone else feeling kind of vulnerable and dirty? ![]() ![]() ![]() Wendy |

Ok ok ok enough Tim bashing. I didn't disappear. I have a lovely wife who wanted to go on a date last night so I spent my time offline with her. Not to mention I have to leave today for an undetermined amount of time for an offline gig so my time is split in 15 different directions right now. Anyway, why did I ask for photos of your palms? It started out as a project for a booklet I am updating for a customer on palm reading. Don't worry though, your palms won't be used. It started out as that but it turned into something different. You see lately I've been getting a lot of emails from people I respect who have blogs and such and they say things like - hey I need 10 comments on this blog or I wont write another one or hey if 10 people buy this product I will release a new update, etc. So this was my experiement to see if it works. If asking for what you want and giving an example is enough to get social compliance. Like in copywriting when people say tell them what you want and how they need to do it. Asking for the order. In addition this was also an exercise on curiosity. Go back and read some comments here. Of course you are some smart butts but most people were really willing to help and even more curious. What if you did something like this with your list? Something fun and out of the ordinary that could allow a bonding moment? What if you needed people to help out with a report or try something out that is quick and easy? All you have to do is ask. So there you have it. Sorry that no one is going to go into an FBI data base and no cats were harmed in the making of this post. And most of all - THANK YOU to everyone who bravely posted their hands in cyberspace. |

LOL I figured it was going to be something like "I just wanted to see how many people would do it." The thing with doing something like this with your list is that they'll expect an outcome that made it worth their while, there has to be a payoff. It's a good way to stir curiosity - but then if they're just left sitting there saying "so??" it won't be a bonding moment, they'll feel as if they wasted their time. In a forum setting like this it's just for fun, but when people are looking to you to provide them with insights, info, resources, they need to walk away with something they can use if you do this. Just MHO of course! ![]() Wendy |

In the next 10 days it looks like you'll be having a conversation with a man with dark hair and dark eyes. Wait, maybe green eyes and auburn hair? It's cloudy, I can't tell for sure. It also looks like you're going to be making some money online in the near future. Looks good to me! Wendy | |

Well here's what I think about this little experiment and why doing something similar with your list would actually be a good bonding moment. First, there is more to this lesson... The OP didn't say he was going to be reading the palms, he said he wanted to share something with us that was IM related once 10 people posted a closeup of their palm. He did deliver what he said he was going to... it was others who speculated that he was going to read them. A great lesson none the less and I think a very important one if you stop and think about it for a moment. 1. Compliance 2. Excitement 3. Out of the norm 4. Speculation 5. Participation Those are just some of the things that were produced in this thread so a very valuable marketing lesson to say the least. Mike Hill PS. The reason doing something out of the norm with your list that gets them to do something and report back to you creates a sense of belonging to a group. No one wants to be left out even if they don't quite know the end result. |

I just got done driving 10 hours to Arkansas. Beautiful state btw. Sorry to disappoint some of you. As I stated before I was going to use the palms for a project but decided against it because I didn't want people to get offended at using a photo of their palm when they didn't know what it was for. As others have stated this is a great way to get two way dialogue going between you and your list or community. They would give you input (in this case palms) and then you could create a product and tell them that is showcases list/community members. It builds a tribe and a sense of hey I contributed to this so let me check it out. I would do that with these but again doubt many IM'ers are into palm reading. |
