Question For Air Travelers...

This is kind of out of left field, but thats what this section is for right.

When you fly Southwest airlines, they do not have assigned seating.

Passengers get to board and pick their seat based on when they checked in and got their boarding pass.

Passengers can starting checking in etc exactly 24 hrs before their flight is schedule to leave. The first person who checks in inside that 24 hour window gets to get on the plane first and pick their seat.

Personally I think this is the greatest idea since from the air industry in a long long time. I use it everytime.

The problem is Southwest doesn't fly everywhere. They fly a lot of places, but not as many as some of the others.

My Question:

Do any of your frequent business travelers, or any frequent fliers for that matter, know if any other airlines offer something similar to this.

It doesn't have to be the exact same setup (I don't think anyone else does this) but something similar that rewards passengers for checking in first or something like that.

Thanks,

Rebtl

I dunno if they do it on your side of the pond but, over here, most airlines have switched completely over to online bookings and you can click on your desired seat on a little seating map at the time of booking. You check in online too so you don't have to hang around in the airport for hours on end.

On the seating plan, all the available seats show up in green. If someone else has already chosen a seat before you, it shows up red and you can't select it. In other words, you assign your own seating and it's first-come first-served.

I've always been a Southwest fan myself. It's like the peoples airline.

    Yea totally agreed Thom,

no BS, no frills, just a seat on a plane going your way.

Just wish I knew of some other u.s. based airlines that did the check in preferred seating system like southwest does.

Sorry I can't help with that.
My flying has been limited to Albany, NY to Florida and back so it's always been S.W.

I think Southwests NEW plan is STUPID! Their OLD one of checking in 1 hour made more sense.

ALL airlines I am aware of, EXCEPT southwest offer yoour choice of any seat on the plane UPON RESERVATION! It is to southwests current plan what southwests current plan is to their older one! FURTHER, many frequent flyers may be preferred according to how early THEY checked in, and they can check in a day earlier, JUST like south west!
