Willie Mays is still alive!

You know, it's important to also note who is still alive besides waiting for the famous to die and then saying how great they were. Willie Mays is the best living baseball player and in my mind the best baseball player ever. He's not dead yet, even if some people got him mixed up with the infomercial king Billy Mays. Willie was known as a pitchman also, but that was second to his baseball. Here's a few Willie Mays vids:

I used to go to Giants games when Mays played and I remember a great moment in every game. He was famous for his "basket" catch, but what I remember more was his shoesting catches, which means he made the catch just above his shoestrings. He seemed to make one just about every game and it also seemed every time his cap would fall off. The guy had style like crazy. He was like an artist playing a game. Like the Picasso of baseball. The guy was just amazing.

Joe Dimaggio was known as the greatest living player until he died and now it is Mays IMO and in many others opinions.

No disrespect meant to Billy. RIP.

I was talking to one of the security guards here, older black man, probably 70's or 80's, and we started talking about baseball. This guy is like one of the only handful of remaining members of the negro baseball league from the 30s/40's. I thought he was pulling my leg. The next day he brought in a bunch of old newspaper clippings. He wasn't lieing. And apparently back in his day, he was the man on the field.

When I was told that "Billy Mays" died, I "heard" "Willie Mays" and reacted quite strongly. I was glad I "heard" wrong. As a life-long Mets fan (40 years now - I CANNOT believe I can say that!), I am so proud that Willie Mays was one of "us". He was a great baseball player ans still is an awesome man.

What I think is a credit to Willie is he transcends baseball.
I hate the game and have never watched more then 2 innings, and yet I have always like Mays and his accomplishments in the game and out.

Willie Mays was my first sports "hero", and IMO is the greatest all-around baseball player that ever lived.
