With apologies to our UK friends...

As I sit here on my patio, hot sun glancing off the screen of my computer, the sound of ice cubes shifting in my cold drink, I wonder: could any life be sweeter than that of an IM? All I have to do at "work" today is make sure I've wiped the Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Oil from my hands before I leisurely place them on the keyboard to churn out yet another awe-inspiring piece of writing. And I'm certain, if I ever manage to make any money at it (even $10 lousy dollars, for cryin' out loud - how about just enough to pay for the suntan oil!) life will be all the sweeter.

Oh, Happy 4th of July for those of you in the US. That's why I'm apologizing to those in the UK, because I don't have any special wishes for them and I don't want to bring up the Revolutionary War and all that happened to give us this holiday because it might still be a sore spot with them.

    Sore Spot?

    SORE SPOT?

You threw OUR tea in Boston Harbour!

But I guess we should just forgive and forget because anybody starting to celebrate the 4th July on the the 3rd has got to be a party girl! Have a Happy 4th of July Robin

I don't think most Brits care much about the Revolutionary War... sorry. I do tease my American buddies about how we 'burned' the White House, though in 1812! It's odd: we do have long memories in Britain, esp. about Northern Ireland's Troubles, but not about that!

I always try to remember to wish my US friends a happy 4th of July: the world is a better place because of the US in many important respects (though criticism is often warranted, too!)

It is a case of idiocy in government, and about how short sighted governments can be! That the Brit. Govt. at the time just didn't see the 'big' picture at all.

Perhaps a reminder to small-minded governments everywhere: you fail to see the 'big' picture at your peril!

Actually...the White House was burned in 1814.

The war of course is known as the "War of 1812" even though it lasted from 1812 to 1815.

Sorry, I was a history teacher.

And good wishes to those in the UK - maybe it won't rain all weekend?

      Robin,

You could wish Andy Murray success in the Wimbledon semi final.

It' 1 set all and 5 games all.

I don't know where his opponent is from

              That was a test.
If you where smart enough to figure that out, then you are smart enough to read the forum stickies and maybe do a search of the forum to see if your question has already been answered. Or start your own thread here instead of hijacking someone else's thread.

Ah, London's not so bad - but the countryside is what makes all that rain worth it. It's so beautifully green and lush!

        Hi Michael,

        whats 'roasting' in england?
It's what pro-footballers do when they're not playing football. Sorry..

Im in Florida...it was 92 when i left the house this morning at 9am. And whats worse, its been raining for a week it seems so by 5-6pm, it will be like a sauna outside
Ok, so it's probably not that hot in comparison with many other places. But our bones get so cold for 6-7 months here that when it's summer, it feels hotter than it really is.

The weather reports say 20c (68f) but there's a microclimate here, so I reckon it's about 25c (77f) outside. We're grateful for small mercies here so in my opinion, it's officially 'roasting' (don't laugh!). No need for aircon though, just a small fan.

I took a snap over my monitor for you - (barely a cloud in the sky)

    Happy 4th of July!

Have Wimbledon streaming live in the background (Roddick just won the third set against Murray - so Roddick has 2 sets to Murray's 1).

    Greetings and salutations to everyone!

I doubt many in the U.K. know the 4th of July to be anything other than just another day, and four-sixths of the title of a very good Oliver Stone movie.

    wow that looks nice.
People think that florida is a great place...and it is in some spots. But when you hear the saying 'its a nice place to visit, but i wouldnt want to live there...thats florida. I've only stayed here this long because I hate cold.

When people come here on vacation, they dont realize that while everything looks great for the whole 2 weeks they are here, for the other 50 weeks of the year, we are under construction, so it will look pretty when they come back for their 2 weeks next year. Plus we have old people by the buckets here. Nothing more scary than a 4000 lb 1970's buick coming down the road with nothing but a tuft of blue hair behind the wheel. This is their land, they will kill you if they get the chance.

Then we get snowbirds, mostly canadians. There is NOTHING worse than a 300lb canadian guy in a speedo. They apparently figure since they are on the other end of the continent that their friends wont see them in their banana hammock so its ok to wear them...so we the the joy of looking at those big white dimpled butts covered in oil and shaded by love handles.

Then there is the rainy season. 2-3 months of flat out downpour rain every single day. Right after that comes hurricane season where you can blown off the map at any given time.

But the plusses still outweigh the minuses. A climate that requires most women to be half naked all the time is not a bad thing at all.

When I lived there in the 70's Mike, the only drivers on the road in cars where old people on Valium and young people on Qualudes.
The snow birds where from Michigan then.
All the rest sounds the same and no matter what season it is the Keys always rock

Is the class system still in effect in the U.K.?

I saw a British reporter a few months ago and she mentioned how heavy the class system was.

Is there any truth to this???
