Worst sports trade of the year.

This trade was made a couple months ago by the baseball wiz Billy Beane whom Brad Pitt played in the movie Moneyball. At the time the A's were riding high with the best record in baseball. They had just made another trade to acquire two more starting pitchers to add to their already very good pitching crew.

So, they traded one of their best hitters, Yoenis Cespedes, for one of the all time best clutch playoff pitchers Jon Lester. There was other reasons for the trade but the main reason most agreed was that Lester would make them a true contender for a Championship. People were saying Beane was going "all in" on winning a Championship because Lester is so dominant in the post season, including the World Series.

Well, it hasn't worked out that way. The A's started skidding almost immediately. At the end of July the A's had a record of 66-41, 25 games over 500%. They then went 12-17 in August and then 10-16 in Sept. They had injuries for sure, but mostly they just went into a huge slump and just barely squeaked into a do or die wildcard playoff game last night. Jon Lester, a great pitcher, had a 2-0 lead and then a 7-3 lead, but couldn't hold it. The A's lost in extra innings.

I understand the logic and numbers behind the trade, but sometimes it's more simple than all that. The old saying in this case is true: Don't mess with success. I think Billy Beane outsmarted himself and messed with the A's winning chemistry. Chemistry is hard to measure and put a value on in sports, but one way to do so is by winning. The A's were winning and Cespedes was one of the reasons why. Plus, he was very popular among his team mates. I could not believe they traded him but thought, well Beane must know what he is doing. He didn't. Very bad trade.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

In this case a typo although I had a gf who had a bad pit. ( I don't even know what that means. )

I don't know if it's the worst trade in history, but it wasn't a good move. Hindsight is always helpful, but I thought it was a head-scratcher at the time.

Another head scratcher trade is the Clippers sending Jared Dudley and a future first-round pick to the Bucks in exchange for swingman Carlos Delfino and big man Miroslav Raduljica, two players they may cut. I know it was for salary cap relief, but giving up a first round pick? Being from California, maybe you have some insight on that one?

That Clipper/Bucks trade is a head scratcher also. I don't get that one at all. Seems like the Bucks did better on that one.

I was stunned. Everyone around here was. People had been calling for the GM's head until he pulled that one off. That talk has quieted down now.

All I can come up with is that the Clippers must have really wanted to get rid of Dudley.

The Patriots trading OG Logan Mankins to TB isn't looking very good so far for the Pats.

The Patriots looked terrible in that last game and I loved it!

Well, at least the other local team, the Giants, won their wildcard game. The Giants were my first sports team that I got hooked on at around 10 years old or so. They aren't favored to win this year, but since they won two out of the last 4 world series I think they have a great chance. Madison Bumgarner is exactly the type of post season pitcher that the A's were hoping to get from Jon Lester. Plus, that guy can actually hit. A real throwback type of player.

The Giants were my first favorite sports team, because of Willie Mays. A few years later when I started playing first base in Little League, it was Willie McCovey. I can probably name more players from that 60s Giants team than I can from this year's Colorado Rockies.

I loved those two guys also. Mays was my idol back then. Willie Mac was a true great. Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Jimmy Ray Hart, Tito Fuentes, Jesus Alou, etc...

Bobby Bonds, Chris Spier, Orlando Cepeda (I think?), Dave Kingman...

My grandmother was a big baseball fan. When I was 4 she bought me a baseball bat. It had a picture of Willie Mays on it, so he was my favorite player. LOL

Grandma had good taste in baseball players.

I pretty much learned to read by reading the Giants box scores back then...

Yep, Cepeda was on the team. Do you remember the play when Bobby Bonds and Mays collided in right center, Kurt? I believe it knocked Bonds out.

I actually saw that play live on the MLB "game of the week". It was Mays that had the wind knocked out of him, after making another great catch.

How about a line up with:
                  Bobby Bonds
                  Cepeda
                  Mays
                  McCovey
                  Kingman

I also read where the Giants were something like 10 minutes late in signing Hank Aaron. IIRC, they called Aaron 10 minutes after the Braves signed him. Now that would have been a line up.

It's amazing they never won a Championship with that team, although they were always in the running. But before 1968 you had to have the best record in each League to get to the World Series. I used to read the box scores every morning also. I'm still a NBA box score fanatic.

I never heard that about Aaron. Damn, that would have been a lineup!
