I think this is an absolutely GREAT idea! I, for one, have bought one of these cards before, and have typically forgot about it - making sure the business in question (auto repair) didn't lose any money.

Want to take it up a notch?

Get an agreement with a local school - high school. Get in good with the principal - I have one that I am VERY good with the leadership in. Go in, and get them to sell this card for $25 each - and then, for everyone they sell, give $15 to the school, and keep $10.

Want to make it even more fun? Give a price to the top seller - say - like an Ipad 2. It may cost $500 (really, not sure of the costs) but, if you have a high school with 1,000 teenagers in it, and get 30% really fired up about selling it - and they each sell an average of 5 each (some will sell more, some will sell less) - that's 1500 sales - with $15,000 going into YOUR pocket, and $22,500 to the school! Wowee (as Don Alm - Midasman09) would say!)

I got 2 hopping high schools - one in the "poor" area, and one in the nicer area - that I think would be GREAT at this!

You just paid off my wife's student loans!

    WHAT IS IT ?

A double sided discount card 4x5 in size that offers free and discounted automobile services, such as a free oil change, a free battery charge, 50% off an inspection and so on.

(see a real sample of an auto discount card i sold below)

    HOW IT WORKS ?

Contact in person a local neighborhood auto repair service station and offer the owner to help them increase their business at no cost to them. Get the service station owner to agree to honor 20 specific free or discounted services. You only need one auto repair service station to agree to work with you and your in business.

    WHY IT WORKS ?

In order for the consumers to take advantage of all the free or discounted services, they have to visit the service station many times and this gives the service the ability to build a relationship with the consumers and keep a good percentage of them as life long customers even after they have used up all of the free or discounted services on their auto discount card.

    HOW TO MAKE THEM ?

Using a computer with a basic desktop publishing program such as Print Shop, just copy the design of the example auto discount card shown above or create your own design and then using color card stock print the auto discount cards 4 to a page, then cut them out using a paper cutter. If you don't want to design and print out your own auto discount cards just make a mock-up design of how you want your discount to look or use the example shown above and take it to a local printer and have them design it, print it and cut them out for you.

    HOW TO SELL THEM ?

There are a number of ways to sell the auto discount cards. Here are 2 suggested ways to sell them.

    OPTION 1:

Sell them door to door yourself or hire sales people on a commission basis. Here is an example script to use:

How are you today? I'm (your name) from (service station name your working with) Do you or a member of your family own a vehicle? (this question will almost guarantee the desired yes answer) Great! (hand them the auto discount card to look at) As you can see there is a free (pick any free service and explain it) all together there are 20 free or discounted vehicle services a total of ( figure out the total amount of savings the auto discount card your selling has and tell the customer this amount) , but today If your interested I can sell it to you for just $10. Would you like to buy one now?

    OPTION 2:

Work with a nonprofit organization, church, youth group, etc. that needs to raise funds. Offer to let them sell the auto discount cards at say $10 to consumers and for each auto discount card they sell they get to keep $5. You will need to up a contract outlining all of the details of your agreement. This protects both you and the group your working with should any misunderstanding occur.

    PROFIT POTENTIAL:

500 auto discount cards sold at $10 each by yourself grosses $5,000 less estimated expenses of $200 for printing and gas, etc. leaves a net profit of $4,800.

500 auto discount cards sold sold at $10 by a sales person or group grosses $5,000 less 50% or $2,500 is paid to the sales person or group, plus minus $200 for printing leaves a net profit of $2,300 for you.

    Good Luck!

    Martin
Will auto repair service stations REALLY offer to do these services for FREE for that many people?

If a repair shop has a $10 cost in every oil change for 500 people, that's a whooping $5,000 in cost that they'll have to incur. In their minds, $5,000 could get them radio spots, tv ads, newspaper ads w/coupons, etc because their minds are already geared toward that type of advertising.

AND, you want them to agree to up to 20 different services, right? If so, that's a BIG commitment for an auto repair shop to make.

I like your idea, but I'm a little hard pressed to think that an auto repair shop would be willing to put out that kind of money, even though you tell them that what you do will cost them nothing.

All it takes is one savvy auto repair shop to run the numbers and turn you down. Better yet, an excited repair shop starts to like the traffic UNTIL he realizes the amount of money he's giving away on an oil change or whatever.

I'm not knocking the idea. I think it's a great idea. So if I've misunderstood you, please say so.

      Well,

      Here's a few thoughts.

First of all, not everyone of those cards get redeemed. In fact, I'd say less than half - probably WAY less - get redeemed. The sale is up to the ability of the sales person, not so much for the benefit.

Secondly - most good auto repair owners would probably love this - because, seriously - what was the last time you went to a good, auto repair place and NOT hear that you had to have new (brakes, tires, struts, motor mounts, etc.) My truck - has 382,000 miles, and I just an oil change this past week. Now, this place knows me, and it's a big chain, so, their fancy computer system probably tells them I won't buy anyway, but, the first time I took my truck there, they came back with an recommended $3,600 worth of repairs. Now - there is NO WAY I'd do that on my truck, as much as I love it, I just kept driving it, and 10,000+ miles later, I probably still "need" those repairs.

Thirdly - providing free services promote good will.

How does Frank Kern say it? (I don't use that kind of language, so, I'll tone it down a bit.)

      1. Give away something cool.
      2. Sell them something cool.
      3. Get them excited so they can buy something cooler.

Doesn't HAVE to be ONE auto repair place, honoring xxx amount of cards, right? Could be 3-4 shops, all "auto-related" giving non-competing GREAT discounts. Like,

an auto repair shop does not specialize in tires, a tire store does.

Auto repair shops does not to auto body work.

An auto detailing guy does not do repairs, etc.

        Just a thought....

          Vikuna2009,

Well what you can do is create a Auto $aver Card and work with an auto repair shop, tire shop, car wash, car stereo shop, gas station, etc and place discount offers for all of them on one card and sell it door to door and as a fundraiser.

This is a great idea and money maker.

          All the best,

            Door-to-door? Seriously?

Someone comes to my door--and I don't know who they are or I'm not expecting anyone--I don't open the door.

Are people really selling stuff like this door-to-door in 2011? If it were, 1971, sure.

If this is really happening, what are some typical numbers/conversion.

            Time
            Doors knocked
            Doors answered
            Sales made

              Yes, Seriously!

door-to-door sales, street sales and fundraisers are still being done everyday in my area and people are making good money still the old fashion way as there is still money to be made off the internet.

I have sales reps who work for me part-time that each sell my pizza discount cards door-to-door and on the street for $10 each and earn $50 to $100+ a day in commissions.

              Thanks,

How do you handle sales reps? Do you sell the cards at a wholesale price and then they can sell them for whatever they want?

                  RRG,

I have all my sales reps sign an agreement and i verify their phone number and address, before i give them any pizza cards to sell.

I make my sales reps build trust with me by only giving new reps say 10 pizza cards a day for their first week and increase the number of cards i give them by the week and based on how well and fast they are selling them.

I offer my new reps $5 or 50% per pizza card they sell at $10 for their first month and then once i know i can trust them to sell the pizza cards and pay me i usally increase their commission to $6 or $7 per pizza card sold.

I do have a few reps that have worked with me for awhile on different projects, so i offer them a wholesale price of just $2 per pizza card, but they have to buy min. 20 pizza cards at a time and pay me up front.

Now, keep in mind sales reps are only 1 of 8 ways i sell my pizza discount cards, so my profits per card will vary on how i am selling them, but no matter which way i sell them i make a nice profit.

I hope this answers you question.

                  Thanks,

You make a very good point that you can have other auto related businesses on a auto discount card, such as a car wash, tire shop, detailing, auto glass shop, etc. and doing so with make the discount card more valuable as it serves more needs for the car owner.

Thanks for your great input and help and you hit the nail on the head to why an auto repair shop will love to offer free services on a auto discount card, because they will make up for the cost of the free services from what they make from things they find that need to be fixed.

I have emailed the leadership of a local school - and this leadership "owes" me a favor for something I did for them in my J-O-B. I just have to remind them that they do, in fact, owe me.

If they approve it, we can go from there.

I emailed the school principal for the 2 local large high schools the Friday before school started, and haven't heard back.

I may try to call to see if I can schedule an appointment with them. One school - I did some major phone work for him and 2 of his Vice Principals - would love to get it going.

My friend's auto shop opens this Monday - would be a perfect fit.

By chance is one of the principles a women?

If so and you want to get an appointment in no time, send her some flowers with a note asking her for a few minutes of her time to talk with her about helping her school get needed supplies, etc. at no cost to her or the school.

If you use this method you will be sure to get an apointment with open arms.

Now, you can do the same sort of thing if the principle is a man, but you will have to send something like a varity of nice candies.

              I hope this helps,

    Hi Martin,

Great post, thanks for sharing it with us.

Since it would be pretty easy for someone to make copies to take advantage of the shop owner, do you do anything to the cards that's between you and the owner, so they can verify it's a real card and not a "counterfeit"? I came up with stamping (unique stamp that would be hard to get a hold of) each card with invisible ink (shop can just hold them under a small black light to check) as most people who are thinking about duplicating it would not know the stamp is on there, but not sure if that would work as the ink may wear off, or deactivate.

    Have a great day,
    Chris

Great Idea another thing you could do with the card is.... Use it like Level up does on a card. For say any of the advertisers if they don't want to give away free. They could put say 3 coupons of their own on the card and have the first one for 10% off a specific service, next time they get that service they get 20% off third time 30 or $40 off. Now this brings them back over and over to SAME place. Plus like said above I'm sure the service place may find "extra repairs". Just an added idea to the program. Great job to all that have done and will do this. The service place could either stamp or punch out every time card is used. Ashley

I havn't had any issues with people trying to duplicate my pizza discount cards.

My pizza discount cards are printed on high quality 16 pt. card stock, full color, double sided and uv coated, so it's not like anyone could just use a home printed and make copies that easy.

I keep things simple with my pizza discount cards and worry and fix issues as they arise, but like i said i have been doing pizza discount cards for over 3 years now and have yet to have any issues with counterfit cards.

      Thanks,

    Martin,

I have a question that you addressed previously, but, it's one that has come up, particularly in pre-screening my appointment with the school system.

How do we 100% guarantee the car repair place WILL honor these agreements? Now, I KNOW they will, but, the question will come up: What if they don't honor it? Who will the holders of the card complain to? Who will be liable?

      Jeremy,

You will have an contract/agreeemet signed with the auto repair place that they will honor the cards and if they don't they are 100% responsable for covering the cost of whatever the cards cost to get printed and any other costs that relate to you deal.

The signed agreement is what 99% of the time makes it so you will have no issues with the repair shop backing out, as they know if you take them to court, they signed a agreement and they won't win.

So, when asked how do we know that the auto repair shop will honor the cards, just say and show then the signed agreement/contract you have will them and tell them eveything is legally binding, so they have to honor the cards.

I would suggest on the bottom of your card on the front or back in small text write something like:

      Complaints? (585) 000-0000

      or

      Questions? (585) 000-0000

and this will give card holders a contact number to call you if they have a complaint or question.

I hope this answers your question and helps,

      Good luck,

      Martin
