Facebook Timeline - What does this mean for Fanpages?

Apparently big changes are coming to Facebook, in the form of Timeline. One of the changes is that users will no longer have to like something to connect with it. Does anyone know what impact, if any, this will have for Fanpages we create for clients?

You can see what the new interface looks like here.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has their finger on the pulse of Facebook as we are currently making a big push with custom fanpages for local clients.

I would guess it will influence in the following ways.

First for those who market to companies to set up their fan pages and get a bunch of "likes" this may hurt. But there is always the tried and true like to get something free. Of course we all know we get the freebie and never look at their fan pages again.

Second which ties into the first it will be much more important to truly interact on your fan page and get a community. Smart offline marketers will be able to really sell this point and sell some great higher value packages to manage fanpages.

Overall though i have to say I fear the changes to Facebook will hurt the marketing efforts of many companies. While it will help Facebook monitize their user base. because if you can't get free facebook advertising you will be temped to pay just like people do with PPC on google. The eyes are there so why not pay to get them on you?

Good stuff guys, thanks. I'm just starting to dig into the new interface but hopefully, as was alluded to here, it will ultimately create more opportunity for smart marketers.

I've been watching the new format over the last two days, and I have to say that I believe that it's going to be a goldmine for new businesses.

The new timeline is easier to navigate and close friends are easier to follow than ever before. What this means to me is that if your close friends follow my fan-page, or interact in some way with my business, you are going to see it.

Since pages you like, are given equal time on the new timeline, The more social and interactive your page, the more people are going to respond.

I've already set up social elements to my fan-pages to be sure that my likers also comment and interact with my sites. This puts me way ahead of other similar pages in my local area.

Just in the last two days I have seen a 100% increase, per day, in social activity for my pages, just from being able to respond to information requests and placing timely/fun/and appropriate information on my page's wall posts.

    EDIT:

Oh Yeah, If you haven't noticed yet, HTTPS pages are ALREADY a requirement if your users are using the new timeline.

Yeah, the October 1st date is still the cutoff for HTTP, but users now are ONLY given a choice to use HTTP mixed content IF THE PAGE THEY VISIT Isn't yet compatible.

If you haven't done so already, your users are given a great big WARNING SIGN on your fan page when they visit. This definitely effects your reputation and immediately calls into question your professionalism. (This means you, Tampa Bay Rays!!)

If you have not upgraded your pages to HTTPS. DO IT NOW!

To me it means that there will be even more interactivity between users and fan pages, which is awesome. Yes, we may be facing something new and unknown obviously, but what I really fear is OUR ability as marketers to keep up with all of the changes that are happening so fast.

    great threat btw

Agreed, it's all new information to weed through and figure out how to use it best.

Fortunately, Facebook gives you the best tool to do exactly that.

They let you use Facebook AS the page... YOU HAVE TO BE YOUR BIGGEST FAN!

When you use Facebook as your page, be sure to interact directly with your fans. Visit their profiles, comment on their wall posts, videos and photos, answer their questions and if they have something nice to say about you or your page/product/service --> share it.

Facebook gives you the amazing opportunity to fully interact with your fans in a conversational mode, honestly and with out having to resort to black hat marketing or grey-ish nameless faceless advertizing.

I LOVE the new format for the timeline, because it enhances the marketing everyone loves to interact with, and the style of marketing I have been encouraging my clients to use every day.
