Default Outsourcing - WHERE TO FIND REPRESENTATIVES?

Hey Guys!

I'm looking to begin outsourcing via hiring some representatives on a commission basis for the time being. They'd be calling and/or e-mailing contractors, construction companies, builders, etc. selling tempered glass products such as shower doors and enclosures.

Where might I find some people interested in doing this? I'm looking to eventually have representatives covering every state/province. Looking to start small though and hopefully get 5-10 representatives on board, selling product for me.

Where can I find people interested in this?

Thanks,
Jon.

Most commission sales people are going to want at least $100/sale. Can your doors support that kind of commission?

You wont find anyone with a brain to do that in my opinion.

Therefore if you placed an Ad somewhere you can be sure with 99% certainty you have just found someone without said brain.

Here's why.

Sales cycle.

1. From initial contact to signing an order will not necessarily be quick in most instances.

2. Payment certainly wont be unless you phone businesses which themselves have no brains. You will be sending Invoices with 30 day terms (generally) and large companies will not bother paying in 30 days.

Reason is any company with a brain maximises cashflow.

So your reps would be working for maybe 2 months and not seeing a penny because you have not been paid yourself.

Which is why pretty much 100% of B2B sales people are on basic plus commission.

Does that help you? Probably not.

Actually, IT DOES. Thank you for the feedback. I was thinking about this particular issue myself. I'm working with the CEO to make this commission-based position as appealing and efficient as possible, and your outlook will definitely be beneficial in doing so. Thanks, Dan!

I have worked with comission sales people / affiliates, if you want to succeed with it, it's all about recruiting at a very high volume. 95% or more will never get the first sale.

I'm now looking into inhouse telemarketers which I think is the best choice.

Great advice. I've come to figure as much. I'm hopeful that I'll find a way to recruit a ton of reps online.

We may be looking into doing inhouse work in 3-4 months if this online campaign is successful.

As for the emailing, definitely just hire someone from overseas to work at an hourly rate. If you can't afford it, just make a sale yourself and reinvest it. I'm gonna go as far as saying all other ways are stupid.

Uhm, okay?

Are you insinuating that you have a team of representatives and that you want to do business? A little vague. PM me, if so.

Keep the ideas coming, guys!

I agree with the post above.

You might do best hiring a Filipino telemarketer. All they need is a Magic Jack or an unlimited US skype plan... those are like $13/month.

You can hire a Filipino telemarketer with no accent for $5-6/hour...

I would give them a 1-2 hour test where they work for free, and they need to make at least 1 sale or get X leads for you to prove their skills.

If they can't do 1 sales in an hour with the leads you provide, you probably need to find someone else.

There are networks of independent salespeople in the US that might be interested in working with you. What you need to find is salespeople who are currently calling on your potential market and who are offering non-competing products.

If you're offering tempered glass, then these would be people who sell door frames, window frames, shower installations.

You might want to partner with home remodelers - offer them a cut of the sale and they're automatically your reps.

That's exactly what I'd like to do. Anybody know where I can find networks of this kind?

& that's a great idea. Thank you.

5-6$ people that should make one sale per hour?? That seems highly unreasonable to me, what are you selling and what's your pricing?

Gotta agree with that. I'd set my standards a bit lower.

These are higher-end products, $800 usually at the least, and the people we're reaching out to are not average at-home consumers, that would be a waste of time and conversions would be terrible. It's the contractors that I want to chase after (they are the ones who will come back every couple of weeks for another purchase). & building companies that need multiple units, lets say for a highrise building for example.

My question for you is did you google this yet. You really need to be able to research providers of services and typs of websites if your going to be successful in business.

search for find commission sales reps....one of the first paid listings is Independent Sales Reps Opportunities - Find New Lines for Manufacturers Representatives which I've used before to find manufacturers sales reps. That's what you want a manufacturers sales rep who already sells to contractors other types of products...they will add your tempered glass to their line or products and start pushing it to their contractors...

That is if they like the product and the commission is good.

I find a lot of my representatives solely on Craigslist, and pay them commission plus give bonuses when certain tasks are completed. There's a lot of smart people out there unemployed, and being so hard to find a job; they'll consider doing commissions.

My best advise would be oDesk and Craigslist; although I do prefer hiring someone native to the country that you're hiring in, therefore it'll be easier for your reps to speak with others in the area. I hope this helps!

Thanks MaxwellB. This website seems oddly familiar to Manufacturers Representatives - Independent Manufacturer Sales Reps Wanted - is it a paid service as well? I was thinking about buying a subscription to that one but I could find NO reviews or proof online, so it seemed a bit sketchy to me. I'm hesitant.

I did google it, actually. I've done some research. I posted this thread in hopes of gathering some ideas and opinions from users here - people who can offer their opinions and tell me what does/didn't work for them.

Thanks for the help!

My concern is that the people I get off of craigslist/kijiji/other classifieds would not be classified to actually get out there and send e-mails, make COLD CALLS, etc. I have a feeling that if I just began picking up random people off of these websites that their conversions would be very low, they would eventually quit, and it would waste a lot of my time.

What do you have your representatives sell?

Thanks,
Jon.

I wouldn't go for craigslist or oDesk for this sort of thing. And paying a Filipino $5-6 to cold call isn't going to get you anywhere.

Max recommended a site that I looked into before, and I would recommend using that site over anything. I'm definitely planning on using that site somewhere in the future.

Not to bust your chops or anything, but you're going to have to offer some sort of bonus or something more to motivate the telemarketer in your case. What you're advertising isn't really too attractive without the proper market, and from what I remember about what you said before, your commission would be below $100 per sale. Is that right, or is that number off?

If you can't find reviews online for a certain site I usually rank them using scamadviser.com and dig deeper in the search engines to find more info about them. Or you can just call them up and see how available they are. If you're hardcore, you could pose as a customer who has a major problem with their service and see how they respond or if they respond. I'd imagine you would understand how they would react in the future in a similar situation.

Anyway, best of luck to you bro.

1. That would likely be the commission for a single unit, but these representatives could be making upwards of thousands / lead. I think those of which have experience selling in the construction business could make a lot of money and see this as prosperous.

2. LOL!! You're a genius. I'm actually going to try this.

Thanks for the feedback.

oDesk is probably the best place to look. You can seek out contractors by location and find ones who are happy to work on a commission-only basis (it will say so in their description or work history), provided it is a sufficient commission amount. Normally I outsouce to India and the Philippines for tasks but I've seen US-based contractors like this so if it's going to be the same commission, I say why not go with the native English speakers in the US...

It all depends on who you're prospecting. I agree with the post above that discusses hiring US based contractors if you're prospecting to US businesses.

First forgive typos I'm on a phone.

Ok you are looking for sales reps it seems. So the key is recruiting and hiring. I train sales reps for companies but also provide a recriuting and hiring service and have charged $3000 a recruit and hire one sales person.

Understanding that you want a high caliber sales person and are willing to pay for him. I'd put a ase salary in place. Not that it should matter because th caliber you really want couldn't live off the base anyway. Still its good to have that foundation.

How to get the right sales rep. First I do what many say not to I place my add on craigs list. I don't really carte about what others think of it. The last guy I hired for a company, they piad my $3000. I place my free add on criags list.

1. Add on craigs list or another source.
2. Create a web page designed to ask them questions
3. Create a second web page designed to ask a different set of questions
4. Have a phone interview.
5. Have an onsight interview

The add: must be a long detailed one

First web page question designed to ask questions the prospect but also about the company they are applying for. These should be question they can not know the answer to without doing research or making a call to find the answers. ( This step filters the wrong people out)

Second web page questions are designed around what they know about sales and sales question they have to do more research to answer. ( Another filrtering stage)

Phone interview: set up series of questions yet again ending it with one comments that states you you are impressed but don't think they may be a correct fit. No matter how impressed you are you need to do this. It shows who can handle rejection. If they blow up on you, even if they seemed good before they are not your guy.

Personal interview decision is pretty much made but you need the face to face to finish reading their reactions and body languages. Just in case. I have some great exercises for more filtering face to face if needed.

That my basic outline. There are a lot of details to fill in that is industry specific. A few other things I do but that should help you get an idea.

Unfortunately personal interviews wont be an option for the most part -- looking to recruit continent-wide. You provided some innovative ideas in terms of recruiting/hiring though! And you wrote all of that on a phone? Impressive, haha. Thanks so much for the feedback!

Try posting an advertisement on Odesk. Be clear on your expectations and house-rules. Take the time to review the Odesk History of all candidates.

Actually, if you want to just set the advertisement on a per invitation basis only, you can do that. With that, you will have to review the Odesk History and portfolio of potential candidates and you contact them directly with an invitation to place their bid on your post. That's how we do it especially when our requirements are very critical or specific to the skills of the candidate.

Haven't you tried doing that on Odesk before?

Like contentwriting360 just said, be very specific and detailed in your oDesk posting and then just go search for contractors with a proven track record (work history) of exactly what you're looking for and invite them to view your job posting. You could search for something like "commission telemarketing" so that those 2 words would be present on the contractor's page.

Thanks guys!

I have done some major oDesk filtering in the past, a couple of years ago when I was in charge of recruiting some freelancers for a company I was doing work for. I've never looked at it on an individual basis but I guess I'll give it a shot here!

Hi Jon,if you have a long term business, better hire offshore to work for you, I'm sure you can save more dollars than to pay for a freelancers who will work in an hourly basis.

There are plenty of job listing sites out there. Before hiring one make sure they are reliable.
