can you still get to the top these days with an exact match domain if the competition is medium or low?

    Yes, but you can't do it with just an exact match domain name.
    Onsite SEO is more important.

    But I've done it (before I knew what I was doing) with little competition...and a small market. But an exact match URL isn't the most important factor.

    An EMD will certainly benefit your SEO, but it remains difficult to rank without ATLEAST some on-site SEO even in some low competition keywords.

    I love it when I see others ranking with a top domain but adding an extra letter to the domain name - such as an "x" or something similar. That person didnt' have to pay outrageous fees to acquire the exact domain, and just added one extra letter. Of course it's all about the SEO, specially the on page SEO but it goes to show that it's quite possible to get ranking high with a little bit of creativity.

    I have found it is easier to get to the top with a domain name that isnt brand new. So see if you can find a domain that didn't get renewed before you go out and buy a domain with no history.

    Exact match domain still work if your business really relate with domain name. And also don't forget the importance of onsite and offsite factors. Do not add any ads script in your business website and increase your domain weight.

    In my experience, there are several factors involved. Ex, good non bloated theme, upload speed, onsite lsi and other supporting keywords, and a few outbound links sprinkled throughout your blog's homepage content to credible authority sources within your niche.

    Having said all that though, an emd still works nicely provided all the above criteria exists along with at least one or two credible links back to your site from an external site. Preferably from an established website.

    You can either build a site around an exact match keyword domain, i.e. howtobecomeselfconfident.com (which could only help rankings) or a brandable domain, i.e. FromGeektoChic.com.

    Either approach will work as long as you get good keywords (low comp w/ decent traffic) with some social love and quality contextual back links from relevant sites.

    Quality content is even more important these days. One's that engage the reader, especially emotionally. They will get shared, creating the natural, engaging SEO that Google loves.

    Buy the EMD but dont make it your main website.
    • Set up wordpress with a basic theme on your EMD
    • Create 5 - 1000 word articles
    • Place one link in each article pointing to an authority site in your niche
    • Create a banner to your website in the sidebar

    You will benefit much more this way rather than just using the EMD as your money site

    EMD have lost a tiny* amount of their SEO assitance, but they still work wonders.. For low-comp keywords, it's been a breeze ranking them with quality content. For higher volume keywords they do help but they aren't they biggest factor so keep that in mind. For me I'd prefer a domain that has been Aged with the keyword in it over a EMD.
