I originally posted this question to ken in the what motivates you to sell thread.

but I thought maybe it deserved it's own.

So guys, how can salespeople benefit from watching commercial or reading junk mail?

I often find myself looking at a postcard or sales letter and telling the sender why I'm not interested, why his/her sales letter/postcard failed.

Helps remind me of what works and what doesn't.

Biggest mistake people make? Their campaigns consist of one touch only. Mind you, I hear from them again, but it's months later, part of another campaign, a one-touch campaign.

I was amazed once when some guy who sent me a sales letter called me 3 days later to say, He'd sent me a letter about such and such, did I happen to notice it? I had, was one of the better ones. He tried again... We ended up with me convincing him to come to a networking group I attend and referring him 2 people.

His only mistake, I was not in the market for what he was selling, and that was not public info.

So, 1 guy in 6 or so years...

This is why it's so damn easy to make money in this industry, and to really, really make a difference in people's businesses. No one markets well. Most of us who have owned small businesses and been marketed to have rarely been marketed to well. Of the few companies who have marketed well, every one I've dealt with have not been able to fulfill their promises. But what you'll also find is of 100 potential clients, only 5 of them will really follow through and do what you tell them they should be doing.

Claude- you get people in your store every day, of 100 sales calls, telemarketing calls, direct mail campaigns, how many of them would you say were "good"? I'd be surprised if it were more than 1-2.

"Junk mail" is a great source of ideas and inspiration - especially if it comes from big corporations who have paid Madison Avenue copywriters mega money to create it. You can't steal it, but you can learn what works and what doesn't.
