What off-line businesses build lists?

List building before the customer stage is common online, but not so much off-line. I'm looking for industries that buck the trend in the off-line world.

Do you guys know of any off-line niches where it's the norm for the business to build a mailing list of prospects? The list could be email or postal mail.

Thanks

Any business that relies on recurring services build lists. Many integrated systems manage customer contacts, appointments, email bulletins, reminders, etc.

Dentists, Chiropractors, Personal Fitness Trainers, Yoga Studios, Auto Service Centres.

But actually many offline businesses do, or could, use lists effectively.

I personally get regular email marketing from my gym (GoodLife), my local bulk health food store (Kardish), my dentist, an automotive detail garage I visited once, my ski clubs (Mont-Tremblant, QC and Killington, VT), plus a few other offline businesses that I can't recall off the top of my head.

All have an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom that identifies which service they use for their email marketing.

I do get some post mail but mostly email from these businesses.

Edit (went and checked some emails)
My dentist uses Demandforce, Tremblant is custom as part of Intrawest Resorts, a couple of the others use MailChimp.

Demandforce is a high-end integrated system. As an offline marketer you can use their affiliate program and get paid for referrals or use their vendor partner program and provide their services directly to your clients.

    The smart businesses build lists!

Check out the major clothing retailers like Kohl's, Victoria Secrets (ohh-la-la), etc. They all build mailing lists.
