An example of profitable giving.

In other forums, like here, I try to give value... The expectation has always been to attract quality people to build relationships with. In some fields, this strategy flat out fails. I'm tickled about this story so decided to share.

I've posted a lot of value on targeted sites. A ton. One such individual (let's call him Bill) who has derived value from my posts engaged in discussions to bring a well capitalized guy (Steve) who is new to the field on as a subsidiary / affiliate.

These discussions between Bill and Steve were none of my business... But my name came up. My name came up in the context of being someone to call to basically get free marketing consulting services from.

Most guys who get value from my posts quickly call me up, or e-mail me to dive in working for them for free by asking very precise 'how to' questions. They do this often without the slightest hint of an intent to pay me... Other times, "help me now buddy and I will toss you a bone if I make some money." That's why I stopped consulting.

Anyway, Bill and Steve talk, I come up in conversation. I get the call from Steve who was almost honest to a fault; "I was told by Bill to give you a call for help with XYZ..."

The problem is Bill was so lost in his own world that he failed to realize that it would behoove me not to compete to turn a guy with capital, an empty office space, and an entire pro set-up into a subsidiary... Especially when that's what he's looking for!

So, after the usual back and forth with Steve, I won his respect for not being a fool. Steve has consequently dumped all sorts of $ on my desk today in referrals (day one) as a result, and has decided to part ways with Bill.

Had I not given so liberally, I would not have been taken as a fool, and would not have a deal in front of me to satellite a sales office that already makes 2015 look spectacular.

Keep giving folks. You never know in what way, shape, or form it will come aback to you in. I almost gave up!!!

  • BigBee,

glad to see this post and your experience

so often, I come to think we don't follow are own rules, which here, is the "#"s game"

we remember the sales, not the no sales!

If you help 10 people, count the quarters

25% will take your time, effort, and information because they need it, and cheaply
25% will neglect your help or dismiss it...and dissappear
25% just want to use you and take, take, take if you let them...

25% will come back to you with positives
