I'm looking to start selling website creation services to UK businesses.

Anyone have any experience of responses to this type of business?

Yes, Its mostly who you know rather than what you know. Build your reputation and you will have good chance to succeed.

What I'd like to know is, if I walk shop to shop on my local high road and ask shopkeepers if they would like a website, what do you think the uptake would be?

Does cold calling in this way generate sales for websites - in your experience?

Yes cold calling absolutely works. But effectiveness totally depends on what you say when cold calling.

"Hi, would you like to buy a <whatever you are selling>" is probably not going to be the most effective approach. It will work but you will need to make lots of dials.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the sales pitch stuff but just wondering if the uptake for websites was good for local retailers.

I did something similar (walk shop to shop on the high street) for a local directory a few weeks ago in London. Don't think it went that well. In spite of the fact that there are ~1.5 million small/medium businesses in the UK that aren't even online. I believe there is a market - unsure how to address it.

The phone approach works better I feel.

I've found the UK to be a MUCH more skeptical market than the US. Results in Advance is the key to unlock the skepticism door to their wallet.

But this presents a new problem. How to deliver RIA without killing your own finances. Personally, I offer a free competition analysis. This costs me nothing and leaves the prospect sh-t scared they are leaving money on the table and being left behind....and provides a heavy dose of social proof.

The natural reaction my UK...and US prospects have after this is "so how do I get what they have?".....leading you to offer a proposal to their request versus trying to "sell" the idea of making an appointment with you for a proposal.

Just my 2 cents on framing a sale to work in the UK market....

Great idea. What do you use to show competition analysis for selling a website service?
