Sounds like a cold call

lol

This one was fun. Prospect is dead, because there is no next step (yeah, I could send some information but whatever)

So, I called him. I said, Hi John, am I calling you at a bad time?

He said: Sounds like a cold call

Never heard that one before. Not sure how I would have respond normally but in this case, Google analytics showed he came to our website and looked at some products.

So I told him.. Well, not really. Do you know google Analytics?

He said: Yes

So I said: Well, your company had some interest in one of our products, and I calling you to see how we can help

He said: That's a cold call

I said: Well, not really.. since you made contact first (with a bit of a laugh)

After that... he told us there was nothing blabla he also had a supplier.. So i tackled that.

Then I asked him: So there is nothing going on now. When can I contact you in the new year to see how we can help?

He said: Well.. We have the idea with the beauty of the internet we don't need cold calls like this and we will find you.

So .. I asked him if he wanted to receive some information so he can find us quicker and after some struggle I am allowed (lol) to send him some.

----------

1. How do you like my responses?
2. What could I have done better?

Don't sweat it. No point in worrying about a prospect who already made his mind up that he wasn't going to talk with someone over the phone. The one thing you can take away from this though is that arguing a "no point" statement like " is this a cold call" won't help. Next time, agree and simply tell him that he doesn't know you and get back on script. If they want to take you off script with more irrelevant bs, just thank them and move on. Also, you might call this same guy a month from now and get a completely different response.

Could you give some examples when this happens?

"Do you know Google Analytics?" isn't a very good lead in. You gotta give him something he's interested in and let him know you know his business right off the bat. "Hello John, (if you have a name), "I see you make Widgets. Did you know that the ABC Widget company just came out with a new model that can fritz-a-frat? Of course he'll know, but that will give him the idea that you know his industry.

I'm willing to bet money you could build a relationship with this guy if you follow up properly. Call him back next week and say "Look, I know we can help you. When you need XYZ - nobody can deliver like us" - that probably isn't the best way to say it, but directly telling him you are interested in his well-being will go a long way.

Most people don't call back enough to PROVE that they really care about servicing this customer.

If he mentions cold calling again you can joke that it's not a cold call - you guys are practically best friends now.
