Potential Trouble Selling Services

Hey warriors! I was wondering if anyone could lend me a hand an maybe give me a few ideas for my problem.

Here is the situation. I am meeting with a client tomorrow to sell online marketing services to. The store owner will also have his son, which is about 23, there with him during the meeting. I am concerned that the owners kid will attempt to steal & replicate what I show them during my presentation. I plan on showing what a sample week of content would look like, and some ideas for marketing their store.

So what I am asking is, how am I supposed to approach selling services to the shop owner, if I feel that the kid will try to steal my ideas, and tell his father to save money on me. Sure I will be showing them a few things that they do not know and may need help with, but when it comes to social media, every 20 something year old thinks they know everything about it.

If this is confusing please tell me and I will try to explain better. Thanks everyone!

    Is there any way you can show the amount of effort involved without showing the actual content? Still, the dude will probably just let his 20-something do it.

    Position your value above what some 25yo *thinks* they can do. Highlight the effort required, experience needed, amount of time and consistent effort requirements --- all of the things that a typical 20-something fails at doing. heh.

    Next time maybe try to get that out in the open before agreeing to the appointment?

    Perhaps you are right. However, more often than not if the owner wants the son to be there it's either because the son plays some role in the decision making -OR- the owner is grooming the son to take over the business.

    Either way, you may want to go in with the idea of appealing to both the owner and son's pain points. I also agree with James...Deliver your presentation in a way that discourages these two from trying to do something that they obviously are not qualified to do. Afterall, if they knew how to do it they wouldn't be meeting with you, right?



    However the situation unfolds - this is a good problem to have because:
    1. At least you have/know how to get leads, there are many in your shoes who don't
    2. This will be a great learning experience - one that you can put into your toolbox for future presentations
    3. Who knows, you may knock em' both off their feet and walk away with a sale

    Please keep in mind the owner may have his son there, because the owner may feel "tech challenged" and he may think his son will have a greater understanding of any of the technical discussion that may take place. Or, the son may be there to steal your plan.

    You should read the following thread, it will help you position yourself and your team(outsourcers) as the experts.

    Pay particular attention to post 4, but read the whole thread. Although, this thread is about larger small businesses, just substitute out their figures for your own, the principle ideas apply.
