Working in the niche of your expertise?

I shared this in a private local marketing Facebook group today and thought I'd share it here as well.

As most of you may know, I'm a retired roofing contractor and as such I mainly specialize in the roofing space even though much of my construction experience translates well to other construction services.

So today I get a call from an interested roofer off a FB ad I ran and as is my style I like to talk shop with roofers so they know I have an intimate knowledge of their business.

I usually let the shop talk go for as long as the prospects wants to talk about it and sometimes things come up that remind me of job situations I had while I was a roofer that we both can identify. It's fun sharing those stories actually! LOL

Anyways, about 30 minutes or so into the shop talk I guide the conversation as to why the prospect had called in the first place, the "offer".

However....

Just 5 minutes before I moved the conversation to the purpose of the call I learned that the prospect is good friends with a roofing client I have in another city!

Even crazier is that my client did what's called a "set" with my prospect in 2011 so they actually worked together!

As I'm finish up explaining and "teaching" the prospect about what I do the prospect does what only comes natural and ask's me what it will cost to get started.

I give him the pricing for setting everything up and the monthly fees and then I shut up and listen.

About ten seconds pass, (at this point the first one to speak looses) then the prospect says, well can I just pay for a full year up front? Of course you can!

So actually the story isn't about me getting the sale but it was fun to share that, the story is about working in my field of expertise and how doing so can make things like this happen sometimes!

Additionally if you have a intimate understanding of a particular space I strongly encourage you to be working that space!

It's a huge advantage for you if your prospect knows that you really understand their space because you can talk "real" shop with them.

Hope this inspires and helps some peeps!

In addition to knowing the Niche, your post also illustrates just how important listening and letting the prospect talk about themselves and their business is to closing the sale.
