Job opportunity (for me, no spam here)

I have been asked to start doing some marketing as an add on to my current job (telemarketing). They also want me to get some extra education in marketing.

Is this a smart move to say yes to, career-wise?

I might be spreading myself to thin

? A title is worth didley squat and amounts to little more than some fancy name to pin on your chest.

You often see whippers mis understand them, in that if they have been promoted to sales manager or some other important title most younguns think it is a ticket to work less and they have made it to the big time and can tell others how it is, when in most cases it should mean you work more, then there are those with titles who should not even have them and are hopeless and then you have those super people who are even self titled.

At best if all people you meet, bang on about their title and thats all they have, then in most if not all cases the title is about all they have going for them.

Will they pay for the extra education in marketing?
    Good schools?

In your gut, is it a good company?

Where are you going in life? You should always know where you want to end up - then any decision is simple. If it is the next step to get you where you want to be - you take it. If not, you don't, no matter how tempting.

If an opportunity is on the path to where you want to be - always say yes. Say yes to everything that gets you to where you want to be.

If you want to be a master seller commanding top dollar in your industry one day - this might not be a good move.

If you want to move up to an executive VP role one day - this might be a good opportunity.

Only you know where you want to end up.

7 habits. Keep the end in mind.

I am not sure but i do think marketing will fit my personality more then sales. I like the abstract thinking, the conceptual thinking and all aspects about branding. However, the grass is always greener on the other side.

I am not very money driven. Which most sales people are. They live for the bonus. The deal. I enjoy thinking, analysing and creating.

The education will be paid for.

Funny enough Dan, that VP role is a dream. Not so much being the entrepreneur but more like a strong partner for the entrepreneur. You also have a VP of sales though

It's difficult to say: "i want to be x in 20 years from now" so it's probably more a gut decision.

Peter Drucker says to write down what you believe the result will be from a career decision and then check a year later what the result really is. There is a big difference when i ask that question to myself. Sales probably doesn't fit my talents well.
