I want to help education get better. Is IT sales a good medium that will allow me to do this?

Around here, rich school districts provide each 1-8th grader a chromebook (parents have to pay $30/year insurance) to take home and use any time they feel like it. Also, they offer a lot of lessons online.

Poor districts have a computer room where students get a turn for an hour once or twice a week.

Can you help the poor schools get their hands on more computers?
Can you help them get their hands on cheaper online lessons?
Can you help by creating math, reading, geography, etc. online lessons that are good and easy to navigate?
Can you help poor schools with email messaging and alerts?

You confused me. I think your heart is the right place but you posed a wrong thesis. You want to help the education system to be better in anyway you can according to your remark.

Bravo for the goal. However, what does that mean? Don't they have school districts, school superintendents and/or a board of education with elected trustees where you live? I purposely did not mention teachers as they serve at the whim of the administrators (at least in my locale).

So do you want to make education itself get better or the above mentioned nightmare administrative entities get better? I will enter the plea that you can't make education get better. It is already good. Yes, it needs refinement but not much.

I will also enter the plea that you will never make the administrative entities get better. They are a political herd that marches to no drummer but their own illusions, delusions and confusions. But that is my opinion and not to be taken as gospel.

Oh, I forgot to mention the state's education behemoth and the 800 pound gorilla called the department of education in Washington D.C. I'd love to see anyone make these folks make education better.

I won't go into the various unions in the mix. That's too political and could result in nasty posts on this thread.

Having said all that, I'd love to know exactly what you want to make better. Education is a full grab bag so when you reach in, what will you pull out to make better?

I know technology in both electronics and internet infrastructure have made huuuuuge advancements for education.

Think about it. Less than ten years ago, both K-12 and colleges had EVERYTHING in print...physical products. Course catalogs, books, notes, grades, payments. People had to wait hours or days to register for college classes.

Now EVERYTHING is virtual. Most colleges don't even print out course catalogs anymore. ETextbooks are huge for students, and online grading allows students to see their grades at the click of a button. Teachers have gone from chalk boards to dry erase boards to TABLETS...within a decade.

Focus on creating a more efficient, more fulfilling experience for the student through your IT work. It's been happening and you can definitely keep it going.
