How vital is it to address contacts (vs businesses)

There's another research step involved when it comes to finding contacts within companies; for example, the name of the marketing head if we're trying to sell marketing services. And not all target businesses will give up the contact information. Some won't respond to the phone call request for the contact, others won't have information posted online or through outlets.

So is it worth it to search for those contact names? Or is this a fairly trivial part of the equation, and addressing the business by itself is fine as long as the message is strong?

Thank you for your thoughts :-)

What's the media that you're delivering the message?

Cold call, cold email, something else?

Call the company you want the contact name from and say...

"I've been asked to fax over a layout/spec sheet/compliments slip (or whatever) to your marketing manager/sales director/ceo (or whatever) can you tell me who I need to mark it for the attention of?"

Works every time, they'll give you the name.
