I toyed with using templates and some of the free WP themes but could nver quite find the design I wanted that would work. Finally I found a simple method of designing my own websites but could easily knock up some for local businesses if I feel the need. What's more you can make it responsive so it can be used on different devices, Iphone/pads,smartphones/tablets which is a great selling point to your clients.I used Headway Themes and have found them easy to use and the final sites look good and you can always tweek them as you wish. The main reason for me using them too is that I wanted to have full creative control and this gives me it. The developer license was pretty cheap as I got it on an offer. Recently bought a theme from Products Archive - Premium WP themes for an offline business I am starting and very pleased with the quality of the theme. Probably wouldn't stick with the theme forever as I would like to get something custom done, but they're great themes for people who like to move quickly and get a website setup in a day or two.

The latest updates to wordpress (making customizer the key) means that some older themes and plug ins may not work. You need to be sure these are updated and supported
If you google this theme you will see some rocky issues.

Plus the Local biz themes are super generic looking IMHO and also kind of dated

the others look better but at those prices....67 euros and 49 euros for the photos? ouch....how could you make money on this selling on speculation? The themes do look better however

Now...remember with any of these ideas...the local biz will have their own ideas....you will have to get their logo (good luck haaha)...which you may have to resize, enhance....you will need their pictures (good luck) which you will have to crop, resize, photoshop, enhance and so forth

Will they supply the copy? Are you able to write it and what would you charge? How many revisions will you do? If you are new some of these biz owners can run you ragged

Planning to sell this as a "lead" site? I bet many small biz in your area already have a better looking site in place. Thanks but no thanks

one size usually does not fit all

IMHO - might be best to learn some real skill that is salable to local biz and then work from there.
I also do suggest that people can learn from working as a salesperson (biz to biz in person and/or on phone)
