Hi Guys

A hair salon has asked me to come up with effectively a Content Marketing Strategy.

Has anyone got experience in offering Content Marketing and what would you say would be a good strategy for a Hair Salon?

Thanks

Matt

Use video. And do it weekly.
Hairdressing is a 1 on 1 service. People start to chat to their hairdresser about their families, kids, jobs etc. Having the hairdresser do some casual face-to-camera style content that:
    1) Offers tips on how to work out what hair style suits your head shape
    2) Current hair trends and how you can achieve it (mention in-house products like gels, mousse, sprays, combs, straighteners etc
    3) Finish every second video with a call to action - an offer to come in for a consultation with 'Rebecca at XYZ Hair'.
Video makes people feel like they know you before they meet you in person - it's highly persuasive and generates authority, as well as being a great way for people to consume content on smart phones prior to making a choice on who they will use for their next appointment.

These are just some starting ideas. Once you're in the rhythm of weekly content, it becomes so much easier to develop further content ideas. Above all, be helpful to your audience.
Tie your videos in with things like Loyalty Cards, Gift Pack offers, etc.

Aim for 1 video per week - shoot the video yourself - charge for your time to be 'on location' and outsource the editing to someone on here in Warriors for Hire, or have a crack at it yourself. The video should read like a story - have a conclusion (CTA).

Facebook and Website for the content. Use FB targeted ads to drive in more enquiries.

If your videos are helpful, people will reciprocate by booking an appointment with you before the competition.

    Hope this helps.

I cant say that I have ever created content for a hairdresser directly in terms of content marketing. but I have designed websites for them. And I have coached a few as to what to write about and what to target. The first thing you REALLY want to focus on is WHO you are targeting. There should be a fairly defined answer here. If you broadly target content, it usually doesn't work well.

Some of the content you will want to focus on depending on the target is Graduation. You want to start hitting this in mid April or so. Weddings... you want to hit this hard in say November through March. Images the first time through this cycle may be an issue. That is something you will need to work with the Salon with to get. I actually worked with a salon that had basically a backdrop setup with decent lighting that they would get images of updo's etc.

Content targeting the most recent trends in relation to face shape. what trends work with what face shapes. Reviews of products. what they do, and who the will most benefit.

Holidays and party seasons. Target seasons themselves. Spring Summer Fall and Winter. Smart looks for a working woman. quick school looks.

      Content is about endless really.

Here is an interesting thing that I try to teach Salons I deal with to focus on. Try not to write about their skills, their specific services, or their products... write about these things in reference to a solution to a problem. So they are not touting their skills, as much as they are trying to draw targeted web traffic with their content.

Here is a resource that I use when dealing with Salon clients to get ideas of focus, and potential target points. Salon Marketing & Business Blog for hair & beauty salon owners

      Hope that Helps!

Videos for sure. But more effective for marketing in my experience would be direct mail and a customer referral program.

I started with day spas, skin care and salons...

an active facebook page is a must for them IMHO

There are so many things - post informational, shared content posts from major sites...trends, news, updates
    celebrity styles, tips..makeovers

    pics of (willing) clients "transformed"

    pics and info on stylists

some funny stuff - dog in a wig, baby in a wig etc

seasonal - Bridal - wedding party
    Prom Do's...."makeover for class reunion"
    Holiday styles
Summer Hair and skin care tips

"pamper" type posts - "you deserve it"

Girls Day Out package - wine and cheese and pedicures

Call to action - sign up for newsletter -

I do agree that you need to target your clientele

a trendy salon in a big city will differ from a more "locals" beauty shop

The content is endless and if interesting you actually have fans who participate

I personally think that a content marketing strategy for a hairdresser needs to be very visual. Videos and Images will be very powerful. I also believe the testimonial from loyal customers would be good as well. You could also create content with tips on haircare and trends with powerful call-to-action. You can also incorporate social media to share real time updates from the hairdresser.

My girlfriend has her favorite hairdresser on social media and they're updating their profiles with photos from their recent (and of course willing) clients. They even have hashtags that they ask their clients to use when they post about them. Good luck!

      I 2nd this.

A content marketing strategy for this particular market could include

      1) Social media marketing- facebook, twitter
      2) Video Marketing
      3) Web 2.0's - Tumblr & Pinterest
      4) Article marketing

I think using infographics would work really well for this market

For hairdresser you have to put some nice videos with new hairstyles for each generation from kids to older people, for professionals to casual style.
You can also write some easy DIY tips now a days those are IN.
You can make video or content depend on the occasions,
You should can do photo shoot for new stayles , and share all this content to different social media web sites and different SMP.SMM sites.
