These guys are worth looking in to:

Why Choose Us - Infogroup Infogroup Media Solutions History

Never worked with them personally, but they did acquire some good names in the industry.

You might want to ask this question in the Copywriting forum as well. Plenty of those guys would be more likely to know, and can give you better & more thorough advice than I can.

Dr E - maybe you could start another thread with this very topic. I'm not trying to sound like a smart-arse, but I'd love to know what the 'right' questions are?

Or just post up onto this thread - but make sure to post!

      Thanks

I did make a post about this before, but after
some digging I haven't been able to find it.

I'll real off things to get clear on...

1 Is the list compiled, responders or buyers?

Buyers are going to be the best of all three because
their past actions prove they are likely to buy similar
        offers again.

2 How was the list derived?

If you plan on mailing and the list came from people who responded
to TV ads, then they are not as likely to buy from mail as a buyer off mail.

Have the list derived from the same media you are going to use.

3 Is there a Hot List available?
A Hot List is a term used for the recency of the list bought.
They come in 30, 60 and 90 days.
The more recent they have bought, the more likely they'll buy again.

If you plan on mailing big once profiting, then the size of the new names coming
in every 30 days becomes important as you don't want the list size to limit your expansion.

4 Are there repeat renters of the list?
Be wary of the list that don't have repeat buyers because it shows they had a bad experience.

        5 Price points?

You want what you are offering to be in the same price range as the
        list have bought.*

Introducing them to a different price point further away from their purchase date gets harder to be accepted.

A lower price point to a responder list that rejected a similar offer to your's at a higher price point can
sometimes work for a 30 day Hot List. Think of it as a downsell.

6 Has the buyers list derived from a hard or soft offer?

A hard offer is pay now while a soft offer is trial and pay later.

A hard offer could have a number of split payments.

A soft offer could be a little money first for a few days trial then billed full payment
spread out over a few months or full payment.

See how the offer had been structured so that you can copy it if you can.
Ask how the offers are structured and price points of them from the repeat list renters.

7 Buyers list derived from how many steps in a sequence?

You want to see the communication structure.

Was the mailer call to action a free call number, a website, a post it back form?

Was the follow-up through phone, email, SMS, mail or combination
        of all?

        What stage in the communications
        was the sale asked for?
What media was used for it?

8 How many offers has the list been sent?

You want to see the list owner/manager looks after it by not letting people send junk offers
that will cause lower responses after each mailing.

By doing all this means you can adjust your campaign to what has been proven to work,
        instead of guesswork.

No place to shortcut these steps.

Let us know how you get on.

        Best,
        Doctor E. Vile
