How I Instantly Got To Page 1 on Google

This is for you peeps doing local lead generation. And yes, it really did happen. So, here it is....

Look at whoever is in the Google Places listing and check to see if their domain name is available.

Here's how it went down:

I was recently looking for an EMD for a particular niche + city. But it wasn't available, so I ended up just going with city + niche. Anyway, just a few days ago I noticed my domain name in the Places area - and I sure as hell didn't put it there. In fact, it's not even my address, but still if anyone clicks on that listing URL, it goes to my website.

Now, you may be asking "Well, what good does it do you if it's not even your address?" - The reason it doesn't matter is because I'm trying to drive local traffic to a PayPerCall program. So if they do click through to my site, they call the number and I get paid. I don't really need to be local, I'm just targeting local searches.

So there you have it. I'm sure it was luck more than anything, but from now on that will be on my radar. Clearly, the person who previously had my EMD let it slip and maybe doesn't even realize the value of what they had. I can see though that they were using the EMD and redirecting it to their brand site.

Maybe they will figure it out at some point, but until then, I'm going to ride the wave.

Happened to me too once. It's luck and it beats heck out of getting there through SEO.

All I need is to figure out a method to find out such domains and I'll be lucky as hell.

Do you mean, see who has a GP listing with a domain already linked, but the domain is expired?

    How can you see this?

    Thanks

Yes, that is what I mean. They already have a GP listing that still shows their domain in the URL. But the domain has expired. You would be able to tell that because it might go to just a generic landing page hosted by GoDaddy or BlueHost...(or whoever) when you click on the link. Look for EMDs showing up in the GP results. Example: "Houston Plumbers" vs. "Joe's Plumbing Services" - see how that EMD is very keyword focused? Obviously someone is looking to leverage that. And maybe it's up for grabs if you catch it.

I used archive.org and when I put the domain in, it redirected to their branded website.

As I mentioned before, I found all this after the fact of buying the domain and setting up a website. So I look at it as just an added "lucky" bonus. I suppose it all depends on the type of domain you are going for. Mine is in the home contractor niche.

Hypothesis #1: Based on my experience with most types of contractors (especially the 1 man shows) they are pretty lazy when it comes to IM. They are craftsmen and tradesmen, not marketing experts. Maybe they get too busy, maybe it just slips their mind, but in any case there is probably a good chance that they just let the domain renewal slip at some point.

Hypothesis #2: There are always some newbs that come into IMing and went straight to local leadgen thinking it's a sure way to make a quick buck. They may have built a site and worked on ranking it (SEO and Google Places...etc), but later find out the real challenge is monetizing it via selling leads, renting it, affiliate marketing....etc. And perhaps when things don't pan out as soon as they hoped it would they quit an move on to something else. Then they just let the domain renewal slip.

Either way, there probably is some opportunity with this, but you would have to be willing to put in some up front work to find the golden nugget.

I bet SOMEWHERE there is a plumber, electrician, or roofer domain just ripe for the picking.
