I want to share my 9x12 spinoff business...

For anyone interested in Bob Ross' 9x12 huge postcard co op mailer business, I developed a version of it using only 6 ads instead of 12, with a NET profit of ~$800...instead of a few grand.

I'm happy to consult with anyone interested in building this business model in their area...free of charge...my way of giving back.

I gave up on it- mostly due to laziness, and the fact that I have a full-time job that keeps me busy.

But- I think it's a great business model for someone who wants to start small, and ramp things up if wanted/needed.

No upfront cost, no ongoing cost...I don't pay for the printing and mailing until 100% of the ad fee is collected from every advertiser, etc.

I got all of my advertisers using email only, but you could be 100 times more effective if you also picked up the phone.

YOUR COMPANY NAME HERE is an effective, simple, and inexpensive way to get your business in front of people who have the money to spend on your goods and services.

Here are the highlights of our program:

-No built in competition (you will be the only realtor, plumber, spa, etc.)
-No envelopes, competitors, or plastic to fumble through
-Only 6 ads on each postcard(3 on each side)...your offer will easily stand out
-Our mailer reaches 5,000 single family homes for LESS THAN 8 CENTS PER PIECE...ONLY $399
-Average household income is ###K in the 3,486 homes in NAME OF HOOD/AREA
      - Average household income is ###K in the 1,514 homes in NAME OF HOOD/AREA
-No payment due until you approve your final ad proof
      -No contracts or long-term commitments
      -Graphic design included if needed/wanted

Please let me know if you are interested in advertising with us- we'd love to partner with you!

      Regards,

      YOUR NAME

I also attached in the email a picture of the mailer.

      GROSS profit for each mailer @ $399 x 6 ads = $2,394.

Expenses for each mailer are ~$1,500-$1,600 depending on the deal you strike with your local mail house for printing, sorting, dropping off at the post office using EDDM, etc.

You may discount an add or 2...I would take off $25 at most.

Lemme know what else I can share.

Thanks for sharing! This is pretty awesome.

Just a thought, it seems like it would still be easy to do 8 on a card, 4 per side, and make even more. Also, I'm sure some business owners wouldn't have a problem paying a one time fee for graphic design. I'm sure there are a few ways to test.

So would I. I'm actually planning to include the 9x12 method into my new business but it does concern me having to get 14-16 customers in such a short time frame while trying to work. I know that others are doing it, I just like the idea of going a bit smaller at first and build bigger later.

I started and did 2 9x12s a couple of years back...got burned out for the very same reason.

The 6 ad model fills quicker, but you make less...it's give and take depending on how you want to build this business.

Joe - goto google maps. Make a static map with the niche
and shove 20 niche competitors in it ( blue icon ) in the center use
use the red icon representing the person your contacting.

Try to keep the radius down to a mile or two.

Then email or mail to each of them and say
only one of you gets the spot - first come first serve.

When I say your phone is going to blow up from them
calling - I am not exaggerating.

This is what it will look like if you email OR print it on
        a card

You can make the map as big or small as you want. You
can really customize it - if you want to - here is a barebones
        example.

in THIS example the red guy has no mobile site ... while
all the blue guys who have the same of type business do.

        edit -
That is a huge radius, I just did it super quick as an example.
2 -3 miles appears to be the sweet spot for people taking action

Complete noob question, but how do I do this?

The closest I have came is going into Google maps, and typing in 'pizza shops in *my town*' and it shows them in a different way completely.

That is the map above, all you need to do is change the addresses
I usually use latitude and longitude address - it allows you to put
more on the map if you want. - This way is easier for you to
            understand the link.

zoom - adjusts how far in or out you want to show
size - is how how big you want it
maptype - is the style of map, there are 4 kinds i think

You can change the marker colors, add your own custom icons, change order
add more, add less ... very versatile

            ---
same map data - all i changed is the size dimensions

            --
same map changed size and icon color
            --

There are 100's of different ways to customize it.

You can read and learn all about it below
            https://developers.google.com/maps/d...on/staticmaps/

            - As with anything, you can get lost trying it a million different ways.
don't bother, i already have - the simple maps with blue and red icons
            work the best

btw: If this shows up as a method in wso in a week or so -
I'm going to get cranky and call who ever does it out.

I guess my problem with this is that, even if I only try to sell 8 spots, I can't think of 8 non-competing niches that I could target in my area. Also, I have just lined up 7 indian restaurants in a 2mile radius and only 1 of them had an email address, the rest just have contact forms or phone numbers and I can't embed a Google maps image into a contact form.

My problem was that very few businesses have email addresses listed and I can't embed an image into a contact form.

You have a boatload of options - not just email.

                    Call them ...

Although KenMichael's method is cool, it requires learning something akin to coding. I love to hack code and make it work like I want to but that Google API is not intuitive for newbies.

You'd be better off taking a screenshot, or linking to the map like this:

                      https://www.google.com/maps/search/p...81.6444968,13z

This way each competitor simply sees the names of their other competitors and this creates more competition. To get a map like this, just type "plumbers in Jacksonville" into google maps.

You can do a simple screen capture (shift + Prt Sc ) of the map, and then open Gimp or Photoshop or any other Graphics software you have, and crop out the unwanted portion of the screen, and save the image. you can then embed the image.

Another expense is PayPal fees but better yet Chase has a free program for online payments.

Also need to factor in design fee...which was free for me since my wife is a designer.

But you can find a good designer for call it up to $200/edition...so your net would drop down to ~$600.

Even if you only make $500 on each edition, but are able to keep them going monthly...then add other zones of 5,000 homes ongoing...it can be as big or not as you want it to be.

Yep, but getting to 12 ads may or may not be something you can/will do...totally depends on your mindset.

No right or wrong- that's the beauty of the system.

I did it twice, but it burned me out...the $$$ didn't matter at that point. Others may thrive on it.

    LOL...I like Ken's idea

play them off against each other - true "fear of loss"

I also think most of the 9x12 or this variation have a real shot at making decent money for those willing to go out face to face, cold call...it offers small biz owners something they can see/touch/understand

When I contacted BUFFALOBT a few months ago, I was interested in the email and the possibility of automation and outsourcing. So, even 300 from an area per month x several areas would be a absentee owned cash cow.

The reason for the smaller card was for faster fill up, only 6 and you're good to go...and, IF they come from an email, I've eliminated any need for contact.

So, in testing, one of my printers offered a special on DOOR HANGERS, which came in at a reasonable test but getting reliable delivery was the challenge...as for selling advertising, having to call on people, not my cup of tea, been there done that...

But automation...sending email, 3rd party fulfilled, scalable then you have my attention. Even 250 net profit times areas, works too.

    gjabiz

PS. Just my opinion, but if I'm meeting with business, it has to be for a minimum potential of 4k per sale, otherwise, not worth time and effort. Too much competition in the "selling advertising" world.

You hit the nail on the head, and what I was hoping to do with this model.

I had like 3 repeats from the first card to go the second month, so I only had to find 3 new ones. I had sold ads in 4 total editions, but overextended myself...and only got out 2 of them.

I also got flagged for spamming, and had to change up the emails.

So I was never able to get to that automated stage...

Well thanks for the update Bob....the idea still holds promise...

it does have some pitfalls - getting past the first couple....getting repeat business

honestly many small biz owners get unrealistic expectations...if not met, they jump to another ad idea

Filling those "last couple" spots is paramount no matter what size the card is...without that your profit is shot

Ironically while an "easy" sounding idea, easy for "newbies" this probably works better for those with connections, experience = I did get a 9x12 in my mailbox = from a local coupon ad book/printer company. I think they just got some of their regular advertisers to try this

JMO - you would need to network a lot, have a lot of clients doing other stuff with you and start the ball rolling with them. But then...this is a lot of work and NOT that much profit for someone with connections and sales experience...which brings us back to the start...I don't know....it may be a good add on IF you already have clients.

This is the challenge I see with the process. I think turnover could be a real problem due to the unrealistic expectations.

I was "one" of those small biz owners that did exactly that when we started in business. We would hop from marketing piece to marketing piece thinking that we should make back thousands from a couple hundred dollar investment. LOL!

I think there's far easier ways of making that $800 net profit... like becoming a consultant and telling those small biz owners that what they're doing is stoopid.

I tend to look at it differently. If you go into this by explaining that it's going to take time to maximize their profits and that the only way to do that is by constantly testing and tweaking their ad, then they'd go into the deal with lower initial expectations. Maybe you could split test their ads for each mailing, show them which is getting better results, move forward with another mailing and test again?

I'd be honest if their offer sucks. It's not fair for someone to expect to have success with a mediocre or crappy ad. Get them to do something awesome, if possible. If they're losing a significant amount of money after 6 months then I wouldn't blame them for canceling, but it definitely wouldn't be for lack of trying.

On the other hand, if they were turning a profit every month at that point, why would they want to stop? Sheesh, if they were even breaking even they'd be coming out ahead, in most cases, because of repeat business.

The lifetime value of a customer can be lucrative in some niches. I'd make sure I explained this to them thoroughly. I might even make up a hypothetical scenario of a percentage of the customers sticking around for 5 years, 10 years, etc and have THEM do the math on paper.

Personally, I think this is just a matter of needing to roll up your sleeves and do some good old fashioned selling in order to get repeat customers. Simply make them understand from the beginning that it's a "process", not an overnight windfall.

      My two bits.

By the way, no, I haven't done this before - yet, but it is on the agenda to do soon.

Sorry about that. No one is trying to hijack your thread or doubt your sales ability. I love your idea. To me, it makes things much easier, faster and more manageable than trying to fill 16 spots quickly.

Ken's a major player around here and I've been in sales for a couple decades, too. We're just sharing our input. No harm intended.

The map is freaking gold! I'd take it and put it to use. I can see how it will work in many businesses, not just direct mail.

      print $419.00
postage $878.33(for an amount of postcards close to but not exactly 5,000)

These are questions you have to answer. maybe looking up EDDM and seeing exactly what it is, and how it can be targeted should be your next step.

Even beyond EDDM you can purchase very targeted mailing lists that get far more precise in the target of these mailings. again there are companies out there that sell these lists. A quick shot on google might be in order.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with subscribers or consumer stats. That stuff is completely irrelevant in this scenario...and quite frankly, limiting.

EDDM mail is sent to everybody......everybody.........every...bud...dee e

Every possible consumer that a local business can have.

          No one is missed.

you cant get better than that...with ANY medium...and that is the strength of this process / product.

      Great questions.

Without going back and counting...I would guess 200-300 in total unique emails, with a couple coming from hitting up the same business a second or third time. Lots of the first ones get missed.

Mostly home service companies like plumbers, landscapers, etc.

But I got restaurants, dentists, fitness trainers as well.

      Hope this helps!

For those wondering about how to get a nice-looking map that works:

Google Static Map Maker | a static map API helper

Just have to put in the addresses, and change the code to change the color like Ken describes above. Other than that, this is the easiest way to do this I've found so far.

Turns out that Googling how to do something does help sometimes!

Please let me know if you are interested in advertising with us - we’d
      love to partner with you!

      Regards,
I'm not fond of your program, as I wrote on your WSO. Doubt the email will work, but you won't know until you try, why not go ahead and send a 1000 of them out? Let your results guide you.

OK, that being said, I'm going to give you my "parting" gift...

a way to FUND your project. As it is, I think it is a mess, a combo of MLM and biz-op...but, I'm one of those that think Amway is a cult too. So, what do I know?

Good luck and hope you prove me wrong.

Now for my gift to you.

Pick a gym. Walk in and offer to give the owner 1000 FREE cards, 9 x 6. He can use these for special promotion. On the back of the card, you have 6 slots.

A trainer. A chiropractor. A physical therapist. Nutritionist. Health food store, etc., etc. Exclusive. Only one. Each person has a good offer.

The gym gives these out, 700 of them, to current customers (who have an incentive to give them out to friends), 50 each to sponsors on back to give to their customers.

The value of the card is multiplied. In your area, 300 bux X 6 = 1800....
minus the printing/design. A very quick 1000 bux, to fund your bigger project and if done right, can be done in a few hours (get referrals from the gym for the back)

With all those gyms to work with, you could set up a "base" for your 50,000 blast off.

So, 1000 FREE cards for host,
      good offers,
      incentives to distribute,
      6 co-sponsors,
      low cost TARGETED eyeballs,
      QUICKLY done via referrals.

      In and out. 1000+ bux,

WIN for all. Try it. And good luck with the huge project.

      gjabiz

PS In working with this for years, I've settled on fast, quick and speed of cash in my hand vs running around, which is why I like finding a host and getting referrals...but, it takes face to face to close it quickly. And with this...

      gotta go.

Hi giabiz, I appreciate your read and quick 1K option for funding. As I stated the WSO is my first and it is more of a biz op so I'm not sure if that goes over well in WF. I'm new to WF so I have a lot to learn. Again....thks.
