My Errand and Your Profitable Business Nugget

Wanted to tell you about an errand had to run Yesterday. You See...

Lately my cell phone has been dying.

I would charge it, talk on it for a bit, then it dies.

Yesterday wandered over to the cell phone store. Instead of waiting in the huge line, I headed to the service desk.

I'm waiting, an employee walks by and let him know that I need a battery.

Then he said the strangest thing...

"We don't carry batteries, try Radio Shack."

Now, there was phone cases, stickers, headphones, even cell phone chargers, but no batteries.

Does this make sense? Or should I say cents. There's a saying...

"If it don't make dollars it don't make sense". Anyways...

He pulled my battery out and said..."yup, shot" and continued walking.

I was about to leave and a girl asked if I've been helped. Explained that a man told me to go to Radio Shack.

She said..."I'll be right back."

Came back with a new battery. She said "you're all set" and was on my way.

How could the same store have 2 different responses? Simply...

Because one employee was ready to send me somewhere else and one was about customer satisfaction.

Now here's 2 quick lessons...

1-Do you go above and beyond for customers?

If you can keep customers satisfied, then do it.

It was a cell phone store, they had batteries. It was an easy fix.

2-Are you sending business away. Maybe not telling people to go somewhere else, but may be doing that without realizing it.

Look at my story. I needed a cell phone battery, I was in a cell phone store and they didn't carry it.

Are there services or products that are a perfect compliment to your existing products-services?

I bet if you think on that today, you can come up with at least one product or service that could easily put extra cash in your pocket.

And she didn't ask if you needed new headphones to go with that new battery?

Simply offering a better service than someone else can ensure your businesses longevity.

I have proved this many times in my own business

Unfortunately every retail business has one or two inept or poorly trained employees.

It's the managers job to weed them out and replace them with a competent one.

Does that also include every retail business where the owner is the sole employee?

Perhaps only in "Gotham City", eh?

        Yes.

Nope, that applies in every city in any part of the world.

If you are the sole owner (employee) and inept you won't be in business for long.

If thats you I would recommend another line of work.

        Any other questions?

          Just one.

I'm sure you have factual data to support your claim that EVERY retail business with one employee is inept?

Would you mind sharing it with us?

The factual data on ONE employee retail owners must be provided by you as your the one that brought it up in your attempt to change the subject.

It's more than obvious that both the OP and I were referring to retailers with more than one employee.

I have years of experience working (salesman, manager, consultant) for several major big box retailers here in New York City... CompUSA, Lord & Taylors, Datavision, Best Buy, Modells and Barnes & Noble just to name a few.

I don't know any one person retail shops as that wouldn't work well here. The closest are little mom & pops operations and even they employ other family members or friends to help.

If I didn't meet my quota as a salesman I would be fired. If my salesmen didn't meet their quota, I as their manager, would fire them. If I didn't meet my quota (as manager) the owner would fire me.

Fact: In the US 8 out of 10 business shut down within the first 4 years.

If your a one person retail operation and inept you will be fired (in a sense) by your customers. You eventually will be out business.

So the rule still applies. There are no exceptions.

Hey Colzin-agree it's very important to have a quality service or product, but...

Unfortunately just because someone has a better product than someone else, doesn't mean they survive or make any money.

That's why it's key to market that "better product/service" and the bonus is...the better the marketing, the easier the sales process is.

Every time I call Comcast to order cable boxes, remotes, or power cords, I get different answers.
I know they recently acquired a lot of smaller companies, but it's very frustrating.
It seems they need to build a data base with the answers.
(Next time. I will try via their website and see how that goes.)
