Can you combine Check by Phone and Mobile Check Deposit?

I have been reading several threads where it is suggested to use Check by Phone as a payment option, which sounds great...Specifically posts by IAmNameless, and in his excellent WSO.

But it brings up a secondary question for me. Have any of you tried depositing those check using a Mobile Check Deposit app from your bank?

I spend a portion of my life overseas and being able to deposit those checks using the mobile app would be cool.

I'll go ahead and answer my own question.

I called my bank, and did a little digging online.

Remotely created checks cannot be deposited using mobile check deposit apps.

Confirmed by BanCorp, CitiBank, and Wells Fargo.

I would try it anyway. Most of the time, support reps, even tellers have no idea what these checks are. Once you deposit one, they'll usually ask someone who actually knows and will let it go through.

My bank allows it but I remember calling and asking and they said no. Never had a problem with it going through and clearing though. They really just look at the account and routing numbers, nothing else really matters it seems. Maybe Wells Fargo is different.

  • The banks use automated programs. Unlikely they would even know it was remotely created.

It states in the Terms of Service for both CitiBank and Wells Fargo for mobile deposit that they do not allow remotely created checks, specifically checks that are not endorsed by the account holder.

It even indicated on one of the sites that they do signature line reviews.

I suspect I could get away with it for a while, but it would sure stink to find out they shut me off when I was half-way around the globe.

I'm planning the safer route when I go back overseas. I'll just have the checks printed and deposited by my daughter and give her a small fee for her trouble.

Hmmmm...I may do a test with the next check and mobile deposit it to my BlueBird card.

At least they can't screw around with my bank account.

  • Barry, you'll only have trouble if one of your customers disputes a check you create. A human will never see any of your checks. I've been in the banking industry for about 15 years
