I make Explainer Videos and...

I want to build my portfolio so I'm only charging $300 for a 60 second animated video with music and voiceover included. I'm trying to figure out which market to target and which method would be the best? Until I get a nice sized portfolio I want to stick with $300 for a full video then I'll charge more. Should I focus on direct mailing with the a website to send them too? Or should I focus on doing face to face meetings where I can give a presentation? Thanks for taking the time out to read this and I look forward to any insight you can provide.

What's an "explainer video?" How do the videos add to the bottom line for the businesses that buy them? Is there a measurable ROI?

The videos explain businesses, products or services. Metrics wise 85% of people are more likely to buy a product once they see an accompanying explainer video. On average if anyone wants to know about your company and they click the video, 50% of them will watch the full video. Also it could be used to boost the companies SEO using YouTube.

I was referring to your videos in particular. Do YOUR VIDEOS convert? If so, do what the previous poster said.

Why not create explainer vids explaining why they need your vids? At that point, you just need to select a market & a media that matches your budget. The point would be to get them to watch your explainer & let it do the selling for you. Email & cold calling are relatively free, direct mail & PPC have higher costs associated with them.

I think you should start doing face to face meetings and bring a sample video for your presentation. More preferably, start with the local businesses in your area. This way you can build your portfolio and at the same time build connections with local businesses in your area. You could also showcase your services in trade fairs and business symposiums.

To answer your question, it depends.

What does it depend on? What are you good at? Are you good at face-to-face? Are you good at SEO, good at other methods of getting people to visit your site?

I would not make it an either/or...

Start with where your strengths are... Add other methods later.

But, if you're doing explainer videos, an explainer video explaining your business is powerful... If seen.

Online marketing has the advantage that it's there any time your prospects are awake... Face-to-face means while you do it, you're not doing something else.

      Do your videos convert?

Because, I can make explainer videos too... Actually, I've done some for myself that convert nicely... Of course, besides doing what I do, I am also a marketer.

But the point is, why should they hire you and not just ask their marketing person to make them videos?

By the way, should you market to marketers too?

Because, though my videos convert, if yours convert better, I'd get yours... Actually, I'd get yours even if they converted a bit less than mine (a bit) as I could do other things...

I think I'm going to do face to face to start and focus on local to build the portfolio with an explainer video to introduce the service. I think that would be a good way to go, plus it would be a lot easier to show them a video in person. Thanks for all the help, I also just pm'ed a few of you the link for the latest video I created. I'm going to get a list of local businesses around me to target and go from there. Thanks so much everyone you all have been a great help!

    I enjoyed the video....but...

When you go into businesses, you will need to be prepared to explain to them how they can use the videos.

Some businesses will have an instant understanding, most will probably give you a confused look.

If you explain clearly how they can used them on their website, for Facebook marketing, on YouTube, etc...Then the lights will come on.

If you can explain how it will help them convert people into buyers, then there will be interest.

Luckily, with the style of video you are doing, most smaller businesses will not have anyone on staff that knows how to make them. You'll only know if you can sell them by getting out there and trying.
