Hi guys and gals,
What are your experiences with getting new clients with gift certificates compared to giving away an item or selling it for $1 or $5?

My thoughts are that a gift certificate for a dollar amount may seem like it's worth more, offers the receiver a wider choice and may lead to more profit (or less loss) on that first transaction.
but the specific offer is a simpler, more concrete proposition and requires less effort by the prospect since they don't have to check your store to see if they actually want anything.

I searched this site but I could only find topics about selling gift certificates online.

I find gift certificates work well with existing clients and well when used as a referral device for existing clients to give to friends and relatives.

I often sponsor many large corporate fundraisers and there are usually gift checks in all the goodie bags and often given as luck door prizes etc. In this situation the redemption rate is low even though we do pick up new business from the activity.

The thought of selling something at a low dollar amount much like the tripwire offers as described by Ryan Deiss and used by multiple marketers in various niches tends to get a more committed prospect because they have an obvious interest in the offer and they have pulled out their wallet and made a purchase.

It is often that first purchase that opens the door to numerous upsells or an ongoing relationship depending on how you handle that transaction.

It might be because people perceive there is a catch with the gift certificate but when they buy a product it is a tangible item in their mind and can decide more rationally to take action.
