Offline business marketing.

Hi, I want to pass out business cards, flyers, ect for a business idea that I have in mind. However, I was wondering what was the typical conversion rate for these methods? The service is in high demand and will be for years. I was planning on leaving some at businesses so that they can give to their clients and others I was going to hand out personally. I was wondering for instance if I pass out 500-1000 business cards/flyers what the typical conversion rate of people contacting you for services? I basically want to know what the best strategies are for marketing a start up business. Any advice is appreciated!

    Please appreciate this:

    We don't have enough information.

There is NOT a "typical conversion rate" on this type of marketing.

    A better approach would be:

What is your break even point?
How many jobs do you need to do to reach it?
Start with 1000 as a baseline, and track any results (probably won't have any, which is "typical".

Why would any business "give to their clients'? What would be their reasn to do s?

What type of start-up? Who is the competition?

    See? We need more info.

I cleaned headlights in San Diego, put small cards in the driver's side window. I got one job out of 10 cards placed, which is great. But that was very targeted, other times, with different services, I shotgunned like you are planning and got NOTHING, from 5,000 flyers.

The better you target your customers, and make them a good offer at the right time and place, the better your chances.

    Good luck,

    gjabiz

Gjabiz is right. We don't know enough. We have no idea what business you are in, or what you would put in your fliers or business cards.

But if you think handing out 1,000 business cards is going to get even one eager buy calling you...you may be in for a shock.

And business owners aren't going to be excited to hand out your fliers to their customers.

It's an idea that sounds perfectly reasonable, until you try it.

Are business owners not receptive to including advertising material of non-competing businesses when they bag up customer orders. Even when the owner is receiving compensation?

That's one of those little tidbits of information you did not share originally. A few might be willing, depending on how much you pay them, and only if they feel like it is in no way competing with them.

It will also depend on if they feel your offer is of value to their clients, and if they can trust you to be GREAT to their clients.

Keep in mind, their reputation is riding on it, too. Just the simple fact of adding your flyer to the bag is an endorsement of your service or product.

Thanks for the advice. I was not the orginal poster but have been considering something along these lines and was looking for clarification. In my case I was planning to pay.

You may not have to pay for distribution. In one community, I set up an arrangement with a party store owner who had a ton of walk-in business. He had a deli menu that he was interested in promoting. I gave him free ad space on a flyer, to promote the deli. He agreed to distribute 5000 flyers to his customers. He also recommended several local businesses owners who bought ads on the flyer. With his help (making phone calls) we filled 12 ad spaces in less than a day.

Perhaps you can make a similar arrangement.
