Can't sell my Web Development\Design Service

by gotty

For some reason I can not sell my website services.

A member of this website was very honest and helpful with me and told me off the bat it was a marketing and sales issue that I had.

So I am coming to the experts - I would like to know what I should do ? I am even willing to do a joint venture where a proceed of the sales would go to you - if you could help me market.

I am currently mailing out letters to local business promoting my service. I never include a price in the letter because I am willing to negotiate. I was also calling businesses from the YP with no website.

You said you were a salesperson and not cold caller....100 calls should at very least get you a couple of appointments to get a sale. I would be inclined to think that its not 100 calls per day even if it felt like it, if so, and if you have sales experience, there is virtually no way you wouldnt at least have appointments.

Well I worked in sales - but it was not cold calling. It was inside sales and although i was the top seller it was more upselling since the product sold itself the majority of the times.

It was me. I looked in the Web Design subforum last night and realized I know more than most of them in there. Scary.

So I glanced in today and saw his thread, very much like this one, and said he should come here.

    Gotty, start here

Good product + good marketing = a million dollars.

See? I can do it to. This whole "business" thing is fun AND easy!

I sell the best Aberdeen Angus in the world, its won multiple awards and beats all the competition in terms of value and flavour. I've a really good script but no sales.

Do you think it's my confidence or script that's putting these vegan restaurants off buying my steaks?

Your script is missing one important ingredient, the final option. "Do you prefer our fabulous beef steaks, or our incredible Tofu steaks?"

Making 100 calls a day is basically throwing shtuff at the wall & seeing what sticks. Apparently nothing is sticking, hence, this forum thread.

    Fallback & regroup.

Instead of 100 calls per day, make 10 targeted calls & put more effort into those leads.

Calling a business just because they exist isn't targeted.

Who needs you? Don't say businesses because obviously that's not the answer.

Odds are the businesses that need you are newer businesses that don't already have a website, so, look at local county/state business license databases where new business startups have recently obtained a business license (filter by recent dates).

I seriously doubt you'll make a sale to an old established business that doesn't already have a website. Those folks don't care about the web (If it isn't broke don't fix it mentality).

      Funny you said that.
I payed my state 8 bucks for a list of 100 newest LLC's.

I thought to myself this was great. Unfortunately, it obtained all info about the business except a phone number; Which, is why i ended up mailing to them. I know they received it today. I was hoping for atleast one call.

My least targeted leads are those from yellow pages. Other than that. My leads are somewhat targeted by age of domain/business & geography.

? Are those 100 new businesses local ? why ring or post ? can you go out and meet the people and just chat to them face to face.

The 100 businesses are within my state. So technically NOT local - if the intent is to go drive up to them just for a pitch. Not only that but some businesses listed as an LLC are peoples home address who just need it for tax purposes.

So as much as i wish I could go and drive to them for an initial pitch I'm not sure if the ROI makes any sense.

Though if needed, for a second appointment or more info, then we could be within a driving distance.

Good thing for me... The farthest I'd have to drive would be an 1-1:45 hours.
I live in a small, and the most densely populated state.

        I think this is subjective.
I would agree with you that calling is very effective, but would not say that mailing is a complete waste of time.
If your prospect has a letter, with your name, and an idea of what you are offering. The cold call becomes warmer; in more technical terms - a follow up.

Thanks for your reply. I am working hand in hand right now with some people from the forum - my copy is actually the one i have on the original post of this thread. I assume it is not up to par with something you would write since you did not even consider it a mail piece lol.

tie up the cold calling and the mailing so you can increase your "touches". Whatever you do, you have to do it repetitively and consistently.

I once called the same number and hit different gatekeepers all blocking me until on the 15th call, I got to the DM. I still got a NO but that's not the point.

If you cold call, call the number at least 10 times, if you do mail, mail at least (3 dun mailer method) and call another 7 times..

Leads are not ready to take you call, you need to chase them and pin them down with multiple touches.

The hungry buyers are out there. What kind of services are you currently selling?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10302526].message }}

Here is the easiest way to start making daily sales.

A:Hire a cold caller to do an elevator pitch for you and uncover warm leads.
B: Have the calls transferred to you when there is interest in your service.

This way,you could reasonably do 3-5 good pitches per day, talking to semi interested warm leads, and not have to spend hours per day prospecting.

Not the only way,but this is a solid way that will work.

On another note;it's important to know how to sell because you have to be able to sell your clients web content to visitors, when they come to your customers sites.

I would definitely make a portfolio, ready to go. So you can ask your leads if they want to see some examples. If they are good it will help your service sell itself.

Maybe people don't just want a website?

First off--anybody can set up a half-decent page with Wordpress these days.

Secondly, on their own, websites are worth diddly squat. They're virtual business cards. If you've got nobody to "hand them out to", there is no measurable value.

You need to quantify the value you're adding. Spell it out for them. Maybe supplement the webdesign with SEO, or PPC.

If a bizness is going online for the 1st time, they're going to prefer getting all of the above from the same provider rather than have a dozen different contractors to manage.

It's not easy to do web design services these days because there are websites now that enables the average joe to make websites easily and for free - WordPress and Webs.com.

I think web designers need to change the strategy and try to become more of a consultant rather than a hands-on designer.

I say make an offer that is set in stone. I saw one company in the coupon magazine offering a $100 word press website. In tiny print it said $30/monthly hosting and maintenance. Even I called him to find out his details ( length of experience turn around etc)

Having a set offer is what I use to do. It makes it easier because you know what to sell and don't have to ask a bunch of questions based on what they may or may not want.

I'm not a big fan of cold calling -- I sound like a little girl on the phone -- but hiring someone is something I've done before and it didn't work so well. There are companies that offer the service.

I'm all about meeting people in person ; I.E Meet ups and chamber of commerce is a great idea.

Picking a strict niche is great I.E pizza places , HVAC places or Plumbers. Those with limited budgets but the want of traffic.

I use to offer companies something for free. Like a newsletter or directory listing or an add on my city facebook page. Freebies are something everyone loves.

Figure out your main idea, your main hook and stick with it. Don't give up because it's hard -- keep moving forward.

I own a digital marketing agency and about half our business is website design and development. Our project minimum is $6k and we are booked out months.

The thing you are missing is TRUST.

People don't trust cold callers. Especially in the web design industry.

You need a portfolio and you need to make your sales strategy more focused on close quarters combat. What I mean by this is get involved in as many in person networking events and groups with real business owners as you can and get to know them before you pitch. Make friends first, do business later.

Join a BNI chapter in your area (look for one that doesn't have a web designer), your local chamber of commerce, and research business social exchanges in your area.

Most importantly, before you do any of this make sure you spend some time and money on something that will get you mileage: sales collateral! Design and write a few one pagers describing your services and showing off some clients then go to a local printer and get them done up on some glossy paper.

Make sure you take plenty of business cards to any of the groups or events mentioned above.

The industry we are in is alive and well. You're just doing it wrong with the cold calling approach.

One final tip: don't target newly formed businesses. They have no money. Go after well established companies that have a crappy website.

Rather than cold call target a company you know you can help and go thru LinkedIn to see if you have any connections to someone at the company you're targeting and ask for a warm intro. That works much better.
