Local companies in UK research

Hey all,

I'm desperately looking for most effective ways to get trustworthy free or paid business information on all active companies of certain industries located in certain regions of the UK (important).

Any suggestions on how I can do this via the web myself (any decent web directories, service aggregators, yellow-pages, local institutions I could mail to to get info, etc.)?

Thx all in advance!

You'll have to feed the company names into it
to get a background check on the health/risk
    profile on them.

    Is this what you want?

Well first of all I'm looking for the best ways/sources to get info on UK companies that a) are active atm b) operate in certain industries c) have offices in certain regions of the UK.

But what you provided would also be really useful, thank you very much.

What does atm mean to you?

Here in NZ, it stands for
        automatic teller machine.

Are you wanting them to have more than one office?

          "at the moment"

No, what I need is an active company that operates in certain industry and has at least one office is certain region or city. And I'm looking for any method of effectively gathering the info about such companies that is available in the UK web. As I'm not a UK citizen myself and have never used the UK web before, so far the only way that comes to my mind is googlin', but it takes buttloads of time. Can't believe there's no other solution.

I don't know how in depth you need to go, I don't believe you will be able to find all of them, but there's a few useful places

Yell.com - the online yellow pages
            Freeindex.co.uk - a decent UK directory

Both allow filters by industry, Yell also by location (and I think the search function in Freeindex does, but won't swear to it, I mostly use it for niche idea generation)

Depending on the industry there are certain "bodies" that could be of use, such as the gas safe register for gas engineers, NICEIC for electricians

Outside of those the main tool I would use (and I use a lot) is Linkedin, which allows you to search by industry (not always accurate) or keyword, plus can use locations or radius searches from postcodes
            Signature

            Always learning. Always drinking tea

Maybe you could give me an idea of any UK government (any other) websites where I could look up the most serious industry "bodies" and organizations? Like I mean, there should be some lists of them or something...
