New to the site, about to start cold calling!

I'm a long time reader and first time poster. I tried creating a thread and now I can't find it? Deleted maybe? Anyway I'm attempting cold calling the next 4 days with the expectation that I will make at least 1,000 calls and have a close ratio of at least .5%. I don't think that's asking a ton. For others that have sold basic websites and social media management, what were your goals? What was reality?

You have a couple hurdles. I don't recommend having ANY expectations when you first begin calling.

Here's what I recommend... if you are certain cold calling is right for you.

1.) Dial numbers... when starting, you need to be doing some volume, you're going to be very bad but that isn't the biggest problem, the biggest problem is the anxiety and hesitation people get when calling. More calls you make, that goes away.

2.) Once your anxiety and hesitation is an after thought, keep track of how many calls turn into leads... and then measure how many leads turn into sales. If you have the averages, it is much easier to to stomach the calling.

3,) Read this: 8 Cold Calling Tips for 2016 To Position Yourself For Success - Income Bully it will help for the most part, though some of it is debatable.

In my opinion... 1,000 calls and a close ratio of .5% isn't unreasonable, but I don't think it is likely for a beginner.

You will probably only have about 1 good lead per 100 dials. My numbers are better. Claude's numbers are better, and many other people on this forum do much better than that but it would be inaccurate to say that a beginner can do the same. A beginner can certainly make sales and do very well, but if your goal is .5% close ratio, you will likely be borderline disappointed at first.

Good for you to jump in with cold calling. It is hard work, but I still do it from time to time when I have a space to fill in my web design roster. Nothing like getting out there and just finding some sales rather than waiting for the phone to ring. Now, I tend to do cold-calls locally by walk-ins, and it takes me about 50 cold calls to get a good lead? I can usually close a solid sale within a week.

    Wishing you luck!

Prepare some scripts first before you pound the phone and then get better from there. No point calling 1,000 numbers with bad technique, waste of effort.

Make sure you have a tablet/Laptop with some of your work just walking in and say you can do this won't get you business show your work and work you've done of other local business they may be familiar with will greatly help as helps trust factor if others locally have used your service. If you have none maybe do a couple freebies for 2-3 different business and use as examples.

Wow thanks so much for all the replies! I will take all the advice I can get. I do have sales and cold call experience so I'm hoping to avoid the beginner stats. I'm confident about .5%, if it's only .3% well I guess that's still a successful first week. I will post my stats here after I'm done calling Friday. Anybody care to share their best cold calling day?

The most important thing you need to have is a solid script.

    -intro
    -qualify
    -pitch
    -trial close
    -close

That's the formula. In addition make sure you have 4-5 different ways to handle the initial "I'm not interested" that you'll here before your prospects even know what you can offer them and write out a scripted rebuttal to all your common objections. You should have all this memorized to the point where you don't have to think on the phone. It just comes out. Combine that with an excited, confident, and authorative tone and you'll never have to worry about money again.

Forget cold calling! I believe using FB ADS to get warm leads is SO much better than doing 1000 dials just to get some leads. I like to funnel mine, and i use clickfunnels to do so. Paying $50-100 to get a $1500/m FB AD marketing client is completely worth it, AND the leads want to hear from you.

I never do cold calling. It is no longer needed. Work smarter, and get in front of the business on FB!

You can drop a lot of money into FB ads before you land on headlines and images / videos that work well for what you're selling. If you're starting from scratch, the income required to get your business rolling has to come from somewhere. So, cold-calling is a place to begin, and needs little more than your time, the phonebook and a phone.

Try to find a way around "selling" when you make your cold calls. You will have a much higher conversion rate.

Also don't follow horrible advice like this.
What's the point of the call if your not "selling" ? Just to call and see how there days going?

Again thank you for all the feedback, I have certainly been reading a ton! I'm not opposed to other forms of leads once I have the money. Right now cold calling is all I can do, so I will pound the phones relentlessly I will post my stats Friday night and see what people think. Lastly does anyone attempt to sell or set appointments on the weekend?

I signed up for info free and I have some big lists, I'm thinking between selling contractors for the higher contact ratio and the new business lists they have that's a great way to get going.

I'm currently working the windows and glazing niche. If you can get a list that also has the mobile number, you'll hit the decision maker 90% of the time. I just got paid for a website deal for $1,400 website deal from an initial cold call in Dec all done via phone. I was going to meet him but no need now. The amazing thing is, I didn't really need to do any selling. He just needed a new website for a new business and I happen to call when he needed it. Probably the easiest sale I've done.

Just through sheer grunt work, you'll make sales, then get better from there.

Just get busy, don't over think making cold calls, keep it simple and most importantly, track everything.
