what type of flyer distributor?

Hi guys, im pretty new to this all and hoping for your input

I am looking at doing a flyer campaign (mailbox, not car windshields)

I see there are many regional and national flyer distribution companies who can take care of this

Also, I am aware there are other options for flyer distrib- USPS does direct flyer mailout for 17.5 cents per flyer, and I was also told that there are newspapers (regional/national) that you can also distribute your flyers through

What is more cost-effective and overall the best option for a startup- going with a flyer delivery firm or having these media companies distribute flyers through their home newspaper delivery?

Also, which media companies/newspapers would you recommend for national distribution?

I would imagine you just have to price it all out to find out what is most cost effective. Search for your best deal and give it a go. Ultimately the effectiveness would depend on whether they actually deliver or not, how well you target for what you offer, and how appropriate your message is. You've apparently asked a question that nobody has dealt with much.

Both do flyer inserts. Check local papers, especially weeklies, most offer flyer inserts.

Check local zoning, see if you need permission or license.

If allowed, consider hiring a sports team, like the HS Bowling team...or use a professional company.

Best to match up your flyer with what is already being delivered to the neighborhoods you want to distribute in.

PS My suggestion is to start with EDDM (USPS) and use a postcard with a tear off coupon, and do small zip zones around the business rather than a one shot deal.

That sounds like a good idea. It would make it more palatable to the neighbors seeing that it is supporting the local team.

The USPS will take postcards but not flyers. The newspaper should be the most economical option per piece and can be handled remotely a lot better than hiring people.

What is the flyer trying to sell? That will determine what is the best option is.

thanks guys for all of your help so far

we do not have a local business, it is for a website that sells speciality products targeted to children.

After calling some of the flyer distribution companies, I do believe it would be much cheaper to go with Newspapers.

Do you think it would be cheaper to go with the regional or national publications? (we are hoping for a national campaign) and could anyone suggest a publication or two?

    thank you

Here's another big question too- is it better (ie better customer acquisition rate) to advertise in subscription-based newspapers, or ones that are free?

The subscription papers will have a higher income, higher readership, and older readers. My guess is that you could target grandparents with your flyer. I would make sure you have a number on your flyer vs just a website.
