Non Small Business - Non Consulting - Offline Marketing

Hello Warriors:

Quick question for you.

Do any of you do offline marketing, but NOT for small business?

For example,do you have a local internet marketing workshop where you sell/teach IM?

So basically, I guess I'm talking about online business done offline.

If so, what have you figured out in terms of your venue?

Library or community college for a workshop. Restaurant with a private room for a seminar.

This is interesting. My local library JUST changed their policies so that an event that is free but money making or lead generating is $40/hr.

But it's still a good idea though.

The community college is also an interesting one to explore.

Posted in Feb/Mar 2016, still fulfilling the classes...most at local library where FREE rooms are available.

Now, I tested in lessons and tutoring, small biz ads, classes, still tweaking and testing the ads.

Easy peasy business, free ads on craigslist, free venue, easy to find courseware, use existing materials or create your own, all cash business.

Depends on your skill at writing craigslist ads, have not yet tried any other advertising. Lots of interest off line for online stuff.

Limit 4 to a class. Will do for ONE. 125. BUT, discount if they have more than one person, so 2 may get it for 200.

A few I've done for free, or rather for BARTER. A couple for work, so I get some stuff done and it makes it worth my time.

Your area might not meet that, or it could be higher.

But 125 is a fair price for the classes.

We like to SHOUT test, test and test. I'll tell you this, a Warrior who has been here for a month and has done some serious studying,

KNOWS more than 80% of the people who are new to the whole IM thing.

As for pricing, not only will I advise you to test...

But, use your marketing knowledge, which is maybe start with a low cost front end...

like a 27 dollar offer or whatever, OR
Intro classes, more advanced, even MORE advanced, Copywriting 101, 201 303 and a Masters, Ph.D. program...at higher costs.

I might even suggest you do a few for FREE, to get your course-ware and timing and pitter-patter down, face a few questions, get some experience of what your market wants.

No rules. I have done and will do FREE myself, for certain kinds of people, especially those motivated. You might find one guy who will become YOUR affiliate, and his lifetime value to you could far exceed any fee he pays up front.

Keep it simple. Also, check out your local SHARED or Co-Op office spaces, very reasonable rates and most have equipment, like projectors when you do larger groups.

Craigslist is perfect for me because of the population density of Northeast Ohio, may not work as well for those who are down in the boondocks.

You could advertise 125, and offer a "student discount", senior discount, group discount, limited time test offer...so you may advertise at 125, but give them the class at 49. Again, NO RULES.

I could come up with 25 courses easily, but that is where testing comes in, what do people want which you can deliver?

            Good luck.

            gjabiz

PS. Today, I'm doing many of these for GIFT CARDS. I accept half if they pay with an Amazon gift card for reasons to be discussed at a later, probably never, date.

Bud Riggs of Carlsbad, NM wrote a small report on Headlight Cleaning and sold over $25,000.00 of his report in less than 30 days. Although these are exceptional results, it is not uncommon to sell a few thousand dollars of your report in a matter of days.

I will personally teach you everything you need to know to get started during a one day session, about 4 hours of time.

You bring good writing skills, I'll tell you how to parlay your skills into a steady income stream.

The lessons are based upon this course, www.writerstollbooth.com/jb which is one of the sites we own.

I've had a business forum online for over 15 years.

You will receive a copy of the report and all the bonuses. Please schedule a brief phone call to help me decide which class to put you in. Class size is limited to 4 people, with similar interests so you can form, if you want, a small support and mastermind group.

The cost for the class is 125 dollars and a money back guarantee.

Initial contact via craigslist and I'll respond with my phone number, fair enough?

Will hold the class for one, but no more than 4 per session.

I've traded lots of services in a barter arrangement, but they were all "small biz" services. I don't think I'd every given any consideration to it like that. BUT, if you're already on Craigslist and they have stuff you want..why not? Brilliant.

GJabiz, this is a fascinating thread for me. I have been teaching accessible web design classes for years, and I have always wanted to teach a hands-on workshop where people starting a small business with a bootstrap budget can learn to get their own website online and start marketing their business. These people don't generally have a lot of money to pay a web designer or SEO company, but I thought if I offered them an affordable DIY solution, they might bite. Wordpress would be my platform of choice.

I know there are a lot of site builder solutions out there now like Wix and Weebly, so this may be an idea whose time has come and gone. I would love to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks!

Would these be new brick and mortar biz?
      Work from home?

They may not have the time either. But, I might suggest you offer an ongoing hand holding for a period of time, on an escalating retainer.

Low cost class, then a set amount for HOURS, based on your initial assessment.

Bootstrappers need to make profits quickly, and they may be willing to spend time to save dollars.

Why not offer to do a free assessment of their needs? Can you do a four hour class or a 6 hour class? Can you video the class or use Camtasia (or other) to leave them with something can review? Maybe a Q and A or FAQ for the wordpress you help them learn.

I think it has legs and could be viable. I would also encourage you to seek out takeovers or businesses which have exchanged hands, and to look for small business better funded than boots strappin poor, like those using SBA and bank loans. Get acquainted with local legal news, BBB, CoC, groups, etc.

Say you charge 750 for the initial class (for example sake) you could charge a 3 month escalator retainer, maybe the same for first month, 850 for second, 950 3rd.

My thoughts are, spend some time fleshing out what you want to do, how much time you want to spend, your financial needs from that time, your community and begin quickly and adjust as you go.

Try to get your own system down pat, with each one you do, you'll get faster and better.

If I were going to do something like this...

I'd have a FREE Marketing Appraisal, with ads always on Craigslist.
Some direct mail pieces to businesses, be sure to keep an eye on all businesses for sale in your area.
Perfect my pitch, explain why a DIY approach works, and make sure you are their go to person for updates and expansion.

And, maybe as part of the deal, you get a banner or link ad on their site.

Lots of opportunity for you, I think.

So, free venues look to be a challenge in my investigation.

But I may look to make some barter offers for space. I don't want to spend too long trying to get a deal on the room. If it's $40, I could just consider that a sunk cost.

But the fact is that if I rent out, I will just have to cover $40 on front and back end sales related to the event.

Interestingly, I called a few places that wanted to rent space from Craigslist Ads. They do seem to be fairly flexible.

On an unrelated point, in talking to a friend of mine...the way he filled his local MLM meetings was from having a radio show and local access cable television show.

He had to turn people away....

If you have so many people you have to turn them away then the room is not so much an issue, unless you're looking to go with a low number of customers high dollar amount.

    Charles,

I used to do tons of local seminars in Boston. The key in selectnig a space is not the cost of the space but whether or not you're locked into paying for a booking there if you don't get enough people for a workshop.

For my all-day workshops I hit the jackpot when I found an office center that had a nice conference room with free parking, right off a major highway, with a cafeteria on another floor, and they charged me only when my event was a "go" (which it normally was). For me, this took all the risk out of promoting a new event.

And how did I find this location? Looked up in the Yellow Pages under "office space." These locations are also sometimes called "incubation office centers."

Where I live now in Western Mass. you have to be more creative to find good workshop space. Our libraries won't let you run paid events in their space. The church spaces are not business-like enough. But often there are yoga studios and the like with a good-sized room, convenient location, natural lighting and good-quality portable chairs and tables that can be set up.

Some years back, I almost snagged a book contract with John Wiley for a book on running local seminars. I sure knew enough to do it!

So, today I went to the Chamber and rented a conference room for a half a day.

The cost was $50 and the event will be held on 6/15, which should give me enough time to promote the first one.

The room holds 8-12 and has a whiteboard.

I will look for a cheaper place another time. So, I will make sure that there is something available for people to buy.

I will be promoting two different workshops to two different audiences.

    I'm thinking the following format:

Hour One: Set Up (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM)
    Hour Two: Small Biz Workshop + Q and A (11:00 AM-12:00 PM)
Hour Three to 3.5: Transition and Break (12:00 PM to 12:30 PM)
Hour Four: Home Business/IM Workshop (12:30 PM to 1:30 PM)
Hour Four: Breakdown and Go Home

I need to decide this weekend what the workshops will be about. I'm thinking that FB or YouTube Ads will be the Small Biz workshop and Kindle will be the Home Biz/IM Workshop.

I'm toying around with the idea of doing a "make up" session on webinar.

All sign-ups will get something of value, of which I've yet to decide.

Next comes promotion, which I'm thinking:

    Craigslist
    Facebook
    Meetup

I've done an interview show in the past for local small business which I may revive.

In terms of offers, one thing I'm thinking is that I'll be testing out real products that will eventually be the PLR products that I sell to online marketers.

    Charles

Note, when I use the term "Home Business", I'm talking about straight up IM.

Feel free to leave thoughts and or comments.

Some local workshop ideas I have seen since looking into this:

How to be a Wedding Planner - $1400

Classes for setting up a site with Wix: ranges from $75 - 150.

How to Network: free to $25

    Developing a Leadership Mindset: $12

Pottery classes, crafting classes: $10 up to $95

Marketing classes: free up to $295

Looks like a good way to make some money and/or generate some leads.
