Wait a minute... this stuff still works?

It's still as 'easy' as it used to be.

Offline marketing, as this forum knows it. Providing websites, search engine optimization, social media and other services to small businesses...

It still works. And it's still 'fairly' easy to get started.

A newbie with an average skill-set can pick up the phone book, dial numbers, and get their first sale before they reach the back page. The same newbie can scrape emails, send out a compelling message, and get sales. Or post on Craigslist, consistently. Or create a brand on social media. Or do all of the above.

When I had just finished high school, my first client ever was a radio station, which payed me 2k/mo. I got them by answering a simple question in a coffee shop, to the right person. (They didn't last long due to my inexperience at the time, but that's a different story...)

What happened to the fire in this forum? The excitement?

Granted, the guys that talk about sales are mostly gone now. And that's what newbies really want to hear about - how to make sales ie. money. JD is no longer here telling you to smile and dial, and that you're virtually guaranteed to get sales. Kanigan may not be hammering away at the idea of qualifying your customers. There's no more Whitacre wisdom. But you can find plenty of their posts with a simple search.

Maybe someone else will step up. Or maybe two of those three will come back, and I hope they do, because this forum needs a shot of adrenaline.

But if they don't, take solace in the fact that without them, the business model of providing online assistance to small businesses is still alive and well.

Seriously.

Is anyone on this forum even interested in 'offline marketing' as I've described it anymore?

I personally think that in addition to the WF's major decline after its sale, the "golden" era of digital marketing has ended and everyday people aren't so interested in hopping on the offline marketing craze anymore.

Selling most services from scratch today is just so much tougher than it was years ago, with most of what was considered unique and cutting edge, now irrelevant/outdated/lost its shine.

The ones making it work tend to be ones who've already got clients in place and aren't starting from scratch; and most of us in that boat are tired of giving the same advice over and over to newcomers who never show up again.

I don't have any clue how to bring this place back to life and I besides checking it once in a while I just don't see the 'reward' of putting in effort.

  • Bob,

    No need to be despondent.

You "invented" one of the best offline advertising businesses.

You'll never have to be concerned with the latest, next, after the next digital whizz bang craze.

You have an evergreen media. It can't crash and burn.

You said people may not turn up for advice. But the others understand...

A good targeted Ad on ink and card will never go out of style or stop producing great results.

This thread pretty much nails what caused me to make my post asking if this stuff is still 'easy' (which wasn't a great choice of word looking back).

There isn't quite the enthusiasm that the older posts had which made me wonder how effective these techniques still are. I wasn't aware of a sale which bob ross mentioned.

But bob has probably hit the nail on the head. How much more is left to be said I guess? There's more than enough info here to get stuck in. I'm about to give myself a punch in the arm to finally do so.

Once upon a time, there would be around 1000 people viewing this forum at most times, today its lucky if there's 200 - 300 viewing these posts. It's a bit sad really, because I believe there are still many opportunities in Offline Marketing. I think it's not only the Offline forum that's gone backwards, but also so have most of the other topical warrior forums. Not sure why?

To the newbies: One of the things most businesses always want is new leads ie, new customers. If you know how to find and deliver leads to local businesses, especially service related businesses, you will always have an income. So if you're looking to get into offline marketing I would recommend you study the many ways of lead generation for local business. Once you have learnt and selected a lead gen method your comfortable with, you can reach out to businesses with your offer.

I have been thinking about doing this as well because I live in a pretty small town and most of the local businesses around here do not know a thing about marketing but there are a lot of them that easily make 6 figures and could make so much more if they just knew how to market themselves.

Ha! I rarely come to this website any more. When I do, it is to look for old (or new) wisdom from some of the best. I found this thread by searching bob ross posts.

This is actually one of the first things i'm going to do the day I leave my job. Just go door to door and find new work. I've got enough to pay the bills already but to take it to the next level I just want to give it my all and do something I don't think others really are anymore.

I think this is the perfect time to be doing "offline marketing." A lot of people are out. Less competition.

Plus there are a lot of services out there that aren't very good at finding customers.

I'm not talking about arbitrage or being the middleman, though those are two things you could say I'm (loosely) doing - rather, I like to think of it as bringing value to a client with world-class services.

Services they'd never find on their own because they're "too busy" running their businesses to find these hidden (in plain sight) gems.

    It's win-win-win.

    Yes!

I'm in the offline business as an online web service company

I like to talk with humans, with the desicionmakers and I love the outcome. But I struggle with my english just because I'm not an english speaking man So when I'm writing a post with all my horrible grammar, it would not be so funny to read.

But still, I love the offline-marketing and maybe one day I will be more active here

In my opinion, marketing is personality. If you are an extrovert, offline marketing could still be the best way for you. For introverts and for those who prefer the convenient method, they'd make use of the internet.

        Yes.

To the surprise of many an extrovert.... people actually like talking about themselves more than hearing an extrovert make stuff up.

Offline marketing is good for older people who don't get exposed the internet a lot. So if you ask me, I'd suggest the best of both worlds.

That is true. But I think that always depends on the kind of the stuff you are selling.

I'd have to disagree that marketing is personality because if you want to earn money, you have to get out of your comfort zone and do something that you may not always be comfortable with. You have to market regardless of being an introvert or extrovert. Identify what works for your type of business and make it work for you too.

Selling is selling. Whether you're an introvert or not there should be a way for you to eat from making sales.

If any situation is bad enough - it doesn't matter how introverted you are. You're gonna knock on those damn doors.

I remember doing it a couple years back with Bobs 9x12 system. Hurt my soul, but i did it and it taught me a lot about myself.

Also, this forum is something else now. It's like a dead zone - with a couple OGs sprinkled in.

the good old days of wild west selling are gone. But they took their lists with them.

Oh man, I don't come here often these days but what happened to you lot?

So negative, I coach people into new "offline marketing" businesses every day. I'd go as far as to say it's easier than it ever has been.

Barriers to entry are much lower than they ever have been, and businesses are now fully aware of the need to market in these ways. Not to mention the newer forms of these services:
    Instagram
    Snapchat
    Facebook canvas
    etc etc

Google seem to be doubling down on ad revenue by removing some organic results from search and facebook are going from strength to strength while making it easier to give them money (as well as buying up instagram to integrate their ad platform).

Seems to me like you all lost your balls rather than the gold rush being over. But I'm an extrovert so what would I know
