Make your business card unique so people remember you

You know having a business card is essential, but how much thought have you put into the design of your business cards?

Sure, the only things your business card absolutely needs are your name, job title, contact information, and your company's logo, but taking the time to design a truly unique card--whether it's unique because it's an unusual shape or because of the graphics themselves--will help you stand out from other business people, especially if you're in marketing. After all, if you market yourself in a unique way, you've shown that you're more likely to have initiative when marketing other people's products.

So how can you make your card stand out from others? Here are a few ideas:

1) Change up the colour scheme

Almost all business cards are white or an off-white that is almost beige. Make your card a different colour--or even use your company colours to make it especially vibrant. As long as you make sure your text is still highly visible, people will enjoy your colourful cards.

2) Use a custom font

Standard fonts are great and easy to read, but have you considered using something completely different for your business? You can either hire someone to create a font for you or go to a site like www.dafont.com and download one.

3) Add product images

You can add a single unique product image to all of your cards or use a site like www.moo.com to get cards printed with a variety of product shots on the back. They do cost a little more than your standard pack of cards from VistaPrint but the paper is high quality and moo.com cards can easily be customized. Moo.com is particularly great if you sell a lot of physical products because you can get a set of cards which display all of your different products.

If you don't sell a lot of physical products you can still use images related to your brand to make your cards unique. Just think about all the images that tie into your brand. Any artwork you've already commissioned for your business can be used. And it might not even be directly related to your brand--I once received a card from a freelance programmer that was black with white text and space invaders surrounding the person's name and contact information.

4) Give yourself a cool title

You could just be a CEO or a programmer. Or you could be a Chief Instigator or a Creative Technologist. Your job can be marketing, or it can be Growth Hacking Professional. Find a way to say what you do that plays up your skills and rolls off the tongue easily. A title that sets you apart from other professionals who do similar work.

5) Use special paper

Of course you're going to use high quality paper or card stock, but have you ever considered getting special paper? Moo.com offers a variety of paper types including "Luxe", which has a fantastic texture and beautiful colour seams(you can choose from a variety of colours during the design process). This paper is significantly more expensive than their regular card paper but it's also incredibly durable and attractive. If you can afford to spend a little bit of extra money this is a great way to make your cards stand out.

Have you ever considered customizing your business cards? How would you like to make your cards different?

Put a USP on the Back Side. Give your prospects a reason to call.

" Grow your Business 30% For No Risk and No Cost" Or.." Attract, Engage and Convert More Customers in 60 days or Less".

The back side of a business card is the most underutilized aspect. It should be a billboard for your USP.

Logos, colors and fancy positions don't mean squat. Results your business get do.

I can't believe I didn't even think about putting this on my list, even though it's something I've suggested clients do in the past--I've just never thought about it in exactly those terms.

      Thanks for the comment!

You can also put a QR code on the back that links to your website, app, or has additional information about your business.

Have you found that this actually got your cards more attention? I've had clients who added QR codes to the back of postcards and other printed materials, but it would take up a lot of space on a business card.

Not to mention most people don't have QR code readers installed on their phones. Frankly, I'll find QR codes to be overrated and rather dated.

Plus, you better have a great mobile optimized website or a landing page with an irresistible offer/call to action.

Stick with the USP mate and you'll be golden!

Btw, many people don't have QR code readers installed on their phones. Frankly I find them overrated and rather dated.

    My two cents.

I agree, you just don't put your contact details now for an effective business card. Sometimes you also need to include what your company does, what it can offer, the products and services alike. Sometimes simplicity is good as well. It fuels up the curiosity of the receiver of the card, depending on how it was presented.

You need to be sure that your business card includes your contact info's and the direct point about your business so it may be clear to the consumer. It's nice to have some design and fonts, but it is more important that it is formal and not have a lot of color on it.

Thank you for your info's. You may also add some images of you and of your product. Also, your websites and some social media so it is easy for your customer to contact you and have some transaction. I'm sure that your business card is unique and more presentable than the others. So you need to be practical, but presentable to your customers.

  • I like the ideas presented. You are not limited to paper only for your business card base material. Some make use of glass or laminated materials to make it more unique to get the attention of the people who will receive it. It is also a way of showing off your creativity as a whole. Business cards will represent you and your company so how it is presented will be a great factor.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works but I can't remember the last time I handed out a business card.

I would say with respect that we should spend more time focusing on our digital business card, being our email signature and not on a physical card that many of use wouldn't have the chance to hand out.

I think it is important to have a CTA on your email footer, name, website, phone and have it linked to your website as well, I would say most people find me from referrals and people passing on my email details, not my business card.

You could be doing a little more hand shaking than me though but I just thought I would throw this in as food for thought.

had an embeded video on my card once, and it worked really well. Expensive but nowadays, its cheaper if you get them done in bulk. There was a guy on the warrior forum, who did this too. I mean actually put it all together, and the video also.

hardly anyone is doing this, so its the ultimate uniqueness.
