Who's your perfect client?

Let's pretend I'm a genie and I can give you the absolute perfect small business client.

Who is that for you?

Is it a client who comes to you in bound from a direct response piece (mail or online) and pays you monthly with little or no contact?

Is it a referral from a current client, who you can talk to often (high touch) and help them grow like a family member?

Or is it something/someone else entirely?

A referral from an existing client.

Clients brag. And a client that brags about your service...gives lots of information, like how much you charge, what they get, how long it takes...

I ask clients, "Who have you talked to about the service I provided?" That's who I want to see. That's the ideal prospect.. If they know what you charge, and what you do, it's a huge plus.

And a great added bonus in selling, is that this referral only knows one other business owner that you have talked to...and he bought from you. So "buying from you" becomes the expected outcome.

Good point. I should have added "A client that pays me in advance, and has managed expectations".

The "paid in advance" thing is key. Even if you work on a monthly charge, charge them at the beginning of the month, for that month's service.

I can't remember ever losing a client over this.

I agree with several others in here. I have 2 ideal regular clients right now.
Both prepay. Both trust me 100% with zero complaints.
One of the 2 was my first customer when I started 7 years ago.
The other started with me 4 years ago.

Other than that, I look for advance decent payments, clarity on jobs,
niches I know a lot about and ones I can also now consider as friends.

Always a referral. They have generally been forewarned of what a pain in the ass I am to work with but that I'm worth it because of what I produce and my competitive pricing in my local market.

    Cost of acquisition? $0.00.

Yeah, Sure, $0 acquisition costs, BUT...what are you paying them to STAY once they EXPERIENCE what a PITA you are to work with?

      I can't help feeling it's not enough.

My perfect client (dog walking and sitting):

    34-54 year old woman
    married
    both her and husband work
    1 dog
    2 small children
    slightly liberal politics
    born out of town
previously owned at least 1 other dog
has been consuming my content for over 2 months
subscribes to at least 1 self help forum/magazine/provider
ranks time with her children as a very high priority
did NOT get the dog as a "practice" child
spends regular time with their dog

Since trying to find out more about the psychographics of my best clients and the best clients of other businesses like mine I've had much more luck attracting those clients quicker and more cheaply.

      This.

I did dog walking with two dogs for someone for a part time job and she comes home from work in the afternoon. I like how she trusts me and my service because we are also neighbors.

A Genie comes and says he'll give my my perfect client? Who do I want?

I know exactly who I want. I don't even have to think about it.

A female 25 to 45 (maybe as young as 14 or as old as 60, but not as likely). She loves Elves, wizards, unicorns, Dungeons & Dragons, and probably reads comic books, CosPlays at conventions, watches anime, and plays RPGs (table top, CCGs, and video games.) She probably likes the Witcher franchise and the InuYasha series.

Most importantly, she loves Yaoi, Barra, Bishonen, Twinks, Semes, Sissies, Transvestites, BDSM, CBT, Monster Porn, and other similar forms of Gay Erotica, which she obsessively reads, and when she can not find more new titles to read, she starts writing gay slash fan fiction porn for to satisfy her need for more gay Elf wizards.

Why is this my perfect client? Because I'm a Yaoi author. The main character of the series I write is a bisexual transvestite Elf wizard. His lover is a gay unicorn. His other lover is a Half-Elf/Half-Demon. He also has 4 wives.

When I'm not writing Yaoi novels to sell on Amazon, I'm on my website writing articles on how to write Yaoi novels and sell them on Amazon.

Meaning my ideal client is the young women who wants to read Yaoi (so buys my books) and then after reading Yaoi wants to write her own Yaoi (so heads to my site to read my articles on doing so.)

She also has a lot of friends on Tumblr and shares her Yaoi obsession with them, recommending my novels to them, then recommending my articles. Together they gather on Reddit and FanFiction.net to tell even more people about my books and articles, and thus she drives traffic from far and wide by telling everyone she can, every where she goes.

And so when a DiJinn pops up telling me he's going to give me my ideal, perfect client, that's the client I ask him for.

Yep the golden ticket is a client who appreciates your services and understands the value you deliver. A natural response for that business owner is to refer to other business owners in his/her circle and your business can then grow
