How do you evaluate health claims?

I started researching air purifiers.
My question to you is: How do you evaluate health claims? For air purifiers but also in general terms.

One easy way is to head over to Google Scholar and search the claim.

So, if someone claimed that their filter reduced hay fever you could search like this: Air filter hay fever

You'll come up with a list of studies that support that claim. If none support it, it 'might' be a bogus claim.

Like enfusia said check out google scholar for a quick answer and reference the study as needed. Also checkout FDA documents and see if you can find anything on that to back you up.

Health claims put out by the manufacturer? I take them at their word, unless they are outrageous. Legitimate claims are followed with lab tests and results. Never believe anecdotal claims.

But about air purifiers, there are no health benefits other than taking allergens, dust, germs, and bacteria out of the air. Air purifiers are not medical devices. They don't cure anything. They can get rid of odors (and the source of odors), and they can kill mold (if they create ozone).

You would be far further ahead by not making any health claims at all. It won't hurt your sales. Just ask people if they have allergies. If they do, explain how your air purifier gets rid of the source of their allergic reactions.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?
