Made a 100 cold calls today, here's what I learned. [on going post]

I make a lot of posts about cold calling, and im going to use this post to reference progress and keep you in the loop of things. I will go over my challenges, breakthroughs, and frustrations.

Disclaimer:My services are SEO, im currently on the second page for my main keywords, i can get it on the first page with more money spent on it. So don't tell me to wait and get leads from that, soon it will happen, then i won't have to make any cold calls. But now its F****** War!!!!.

Background: I'm 22, just got fired, have OKAY money to live off on for a couple of WEEKS, i pay rent week to week, which is good for me . One sale can cover my expenses(not even kidding). However, my goal is not to get by month by month, f*** that. I hope this post will be helpful to anyone in a similar situation.

Goal: make 1,200 a week, so thats 2 sales a week. Invest back in business, whether buying some X to boost rankings, or Buy Y to improve on page content(like mentioned currently on the 2nd page). I want to cold call to a point where things are referral base and leads are coming from online.

So lets get right into it.

This is hard selling, im not making appointment(only if its necessary) but my intention is to sell, sell, sell. If you have any disagreements with this, thats ok. I remember someone called me about seo, we had a great conversation, he told me what problems he saw on my site, and he was very much right, he gave me his rate, but most importantly he made me feel that their was a problem that i needed to fix right away, and to tell you the truth, i was getting ready to buy from him. The emotion i felt, i justified not buying because its not the move i wanna make at the moment. So can you one call close, yes. I believe it now.

1) I find businesses who are on the second page of google, i make a list about 100 businesses in a specific niche (google sheets are good for keeping things organized beats excel for sure). Also i make sure these are not big corporations. This is important, you want to call small boss first before you hit the big boss. Like a video game.

2)I make 100 calls, here is the basic results you will get if you call, even if its a pre qualified list.

out of 100 calls, 8-15 business owners will pick up. That's all you need to know. Business owners are busy and kinda dominant sounding.

Here is my biggest regret today(7/27/17), i would hang up on at least 70% of business owners that picked up........... i know.

I learned that this is killing me chance of a sale BIG TIME.

I learned to be okay with ******* up, fumbling through words, getting nervous, because everything that i experience is making me stronger..

Just letting you know, he told me to cut to the chase, pricing and what not. so i did, but i could have done better.

I could have 1 sale today after telling the prospect what i did and my price, but i ****ed up on my presentation, spoke fast, got nervous, didn't handle an easy objection he threw at me. which was the following.

I had this seo service before, but it didn't work out, to tell you the truth im not interested.

I could have elaborated more on why things didn't work out, what would you like to see, etc.

i just hanged up and moved on.

I smell a sale very soon, im starting to really believe in myself, to a point where getting a job would be going backwards. Its cold calling or die for me. I must evolve, i will not evolve if i go back to working at a job i hate just to get fired for not caring about the job. This sense of urgency and fear is a gift. I will use it to break through bullshit. I will keep you updated and let you know my stats.

Can you anyone reference any directory for businesses that just opened up, my fear is to run out of leads who are mainly business owners, i currently use google to find businesses

Update 8/13/17

The past 2 weeks have been eye opening. Keep in mind i do not know anyone name when im calling by the way.

2 weeks ago i would be afraid of talking to decision makers and hang up on a huge portion of people that picked up. As you can expect no results maybe 1 person interested but not nothing promising.

This past week, amazing. I adjusted my script(new script that i didn't share yet) and didn't not change it, it became natural. At this point, i sound more professional, trustworthy, and confident.

for 3 days,

Tues, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday i would make 130-250 calls.

Each day i would get about 1-3 decision makers interested. No appointment just more of a follow up call to see if they want to make a payment or not. I didn't create urgency which is why i didn't make a sale on the spot, but i know now, maybe some of you can help me in this area.

Making calls is becoming easy and less fearful, my mindset has changed. I feel more in control of my life than i have ever felt. This alpha male feeling of in control. I spent most of my adult life running away from doing what i needed to do, which was make cold calls.

Oh yeah gatekeepers ?

I love them, work with the gatekeeper don't try to past her. Be respectful of her boss time and her time. Use her name. Talk slowly sound sexy lol works for me , but nothing works unless i make a sale i know.

so im going to stick to my schedule and my script.

Don't be afraid to make a cold call, out 100 calls one person will keep you on the phone for longer than 5 minutes or even 30 minutes lol. The more you get better with your flow, more people would be interested. It's weird

So yeah that's where im at now, thanks for all your support guys. Just need help making sales on the spot like some of you guys did. Alot of these guys just want me to call them next week.

There are millions of businesses you could call. You're gonna stop breathing long before you ever run out of numbers to dial.

Honestly, you are better off selling business leads than SEO if you know how to make that work. Business hear SEO and they think scam. They hear leads and they think $$$. If you know how to do PPC you can make it work. You have to target businesses were Adwords do not cost $25 a click, but there are plenty of niches out there. Then you set up their website and start running adwords. If you charge 4-5x the click rate you will still make money.

Do SEO for them as well so you are not always paying for clicks and really there are several different ways to make this work, but unless the business is already sold on SEO it's going to be hard to make SEO sales.

I'm going to disagree here, to an extent... the lead in for SEO should be leads, and not better positioning.. listing #12 vs listing #7 is not much of a difference... for that matter organic listing #2 isn't that different from listing #12 ( in regards to localized listings )

The game changer in local SEO.. is to either dominate organic IE 3 or 4 of the top 10 listings for the business you are working for... OR a listing in the 3 pack.

My issue.. let me rephrase that.. the clients biggest issue with lead generation using PPC is the budget.. they are basically signing over a blank check... Client says "how many leads should I expect to get?" you look on adwords and for the 10 terms you plan to target is says 1000 ish.. the end of the month rolls around and low and behold there is 5000 clicks. now what?

In small to mid town America localized SEO is EASY to gain position.. it flat out is not hard to do... getting in the 3 pack in most cases is pretty easy as well...Dominating organic results... I would say you have to know what you are doing.. but even with that, its really not rocket science.

The problem with the practice of SEO today is the dependents of back links... as far as anyone is concerned that is the only way to gain traction and rank... I am here to say that is actually pretty far from the truth in the realm of localized search results.

Understanding how to contain a sites juice with inter site linking with some injections such as YouTube and facebook, you can do crazy stuff. Understanding true onpage SEO tactics, and the math is a real help. If the client has a Google Business acct and you start slamming citations to get into that 3 pack.

The things you are looking for that are good indicators of business' that would be easy to gain results QUICK. If there is the likes of YELP or Facebook in the top 10 listings... you can easily get your client in there. In many small towns. the 3 packs, don't have 3 listings.

With proper SEO efforts in small to mid sized markets, you really should see position results changes in a matter of days. Even in bigger markets, get the onpage math and onsite linking correct... maybe MAYBE a week tops.

I don't disagree that SEO is the best option. You are more likely to get clicks on a website on the first page of Google, than clicks on Google Adwords.

The problem comes down to selling. Once you say SEO unless the potential client is already on board with SEO you could get hung up on. If your are selling leads it's just a different story. Selling leads is just easier than SEO.

The goal would be to have many websites in many niches on the #1 of Google so you can just pass them onto to different clients when the current client quits, but be selling leads wrather than SEO.

I understand the "Goal" but the OP has no job.. and needs to make a sale yesterday. So I am thinking the "Leads" model is kind of out the door.

why not post some flyers to the 100 businesses? I find leads that call you are more likely to convert find ways to get them to call you and make some money will be much easier then randomly ringing 100s of businesses. If you must cold call practice with some friends first to get your pitch right have your pitch written in front of you.
Randomly ringing and starting with hi i want to sell you something will get rejection pretty quick.

However starting with something like Hi, I am interested in your product get them talking to you first then let them know you found them on the 2nd 3rd 4th 100th page of google and how you can help them get more leads etc.

    good luck
