THE DIRTY LITTLE SECRET: Many gurus won't tell you the WHOLE story of why something worked. One guru I know made a boatload of money just days after starting the "Offline-Online" process. Nobody was told that 80% of that money came from one client that she already had a relationship. Frankly, most people are not going to share the failures of their systems, just the successes.

My DIRTY LITTLE SECRET: I tried a bunch of the methods springing up all over the 'Net and they did not work for me. I had to go back to methods I knew WORKED FOR ME! I don't know if they can work for you.

I spent years in the entertainment business. Most of the things done in the entertainment business have never been heard of in the "regular" brick and mortar world.

When I had breakfast with a major sports figure who was starting a new business, I created a custom magic trick for him. As a result, I got his personal phone number, his office number, his email address, and plenty of good will.

Fortunately, for me, I got to spend time with some of the greatest entertainers in the world as well as some of the best marketers. Consequently, I blended my experience to develop a system that works for me. That's the ticket.

You've got to find what works for you.


I spent quite a bit of time talking with an industry leader in the "Online-Offline Business."

I used his letters, scripts, and techniques.

I mailed over 50 letters like he said. I cold called like he said. I contacted private and governmental organizations like he said.

THEY DID NOT WORK FOR ME!

I had to go back to what I knew, what my experience had taught me, and what had WORKED FOR ME, in the past.

I think that is important.

You can take systems, methods, and techniques from others..... but you have to make them yours. If you have to adapt, adopt, and modify (Sound like a Marine Gunny, don't I?) until they WORK FOR YOU, keep trying.

Additionally, I want to add that I have purchased thousands upon thousands of dollars of materials from almost every guru on the planet.

The bottom line, for me, at least, is to use things that work for me.



I know my strengths. I know where I miss it. If I am weak in an area, I hire someone to make up the difference. If I want to learn something that will be useful, I take the time to learn it. If I know that someone else can do something better than I, more quickly, I hire them, so I can do what I do best.



I say all these things to help you to see that there is no real "Magic Bullet."



I put on a seminar for local business owners because I have over 30 years experience being in front of people and getting paid.

Based upon the feedback from the people who attended my seminar, I know that they were HUNGRY to receive what I had to offer.

I created a press release that tapped into that hunger and pain.



The bottom line I want to mention is that your success is not only about what system you use, but how you can use what you already have to make it work.



With that said, in a nutshell: the local Çhamber of Commerce in the THREE cities around me DID NOT want me pitching something to their members unless I was a member. Therefore, I went to other associations with a press release; both electronic and in print.

I followed up with a simple phone call inviting members to attend my seminar.



At the seminar, I DID NOT use a power point presentation. I chatted with the attendees about the power of the internet. You know, keywords, searching, Youtube, email, etc.

After the seminar about sixty percent wanted my card.

The next day, I figured about 20% of those attending called me (Boy did my ear fall off).

Now, to me, the most exciting thing is that these business owners will have success with me FIRST, with the internet, then I can upsell them to one of my other packages on business development where I can get 10-20 THOUSAND extra apiece.



THAT IS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF ME DOING SEMINARS AND GETTING CLIENTS... NOT THE INTERNET MARKETING , PER SE, BUT TO GET A CLIENT THAT IS WILLING TO PAY ME 10 OR 20 THOUSAND INSTEAD OF $1500 - $5000.

BTW, seminars are just one way I get clients. Almost all chase me.

I hope this brief message is helpful in having you look at your abilities to move ahead.

    Hey Millard,

    Your words are often but not always true.
    What I advise people do is to start by doing
    their own research, figure out "how" you want
    to make money online.

    Then ...

    Seek out others who are doing just that, subscriber
    to a few newsletters from those people who are where
    you want to be.

    Years ago I wanted to learn seo which I would pair
    with affiliate marketing, I cut my teeth so to speak
    on forums just like this one.

    Asking questions, sharing ideas when I had them and
    generally taking action on my own personal plan of attack.
    Most people do not have their own plan and thus run
    into trouble with "Guru" types.

    The other dirty little secret.

    It takes work.

    I personally hate and never use words like:

    -bum
    -lazy
    -simple
    -guarantee
    -ect

    That being said anything can happen online, if you
    set goals and follow through anything is possible.

    I'm SO glad you posted this. So often products are created after people try a boatload of stuff that didn't work. Then 'something works' and a product is born.

    But we don't hear about all the learning that took place and laid the groundwork for the thing that 'finally works'.

    If you look at people who are super successful, they didn't do it by copying someone else. BUT, it CAN help to try someone else's system to have a place to start.

    It's reassuring to remember that, in the end, we're better off finding the methods that work for us, instead of continuing to looking for the 'perfect system' that someone else created for themselves.

      Look - if you have no desire to send direct mail - don't.

      Don't want to call people up cold - not a problem.

      Don't want to work - that's a problem.

      Before anyone buys anything they should take a few things into account.

      1. Your personality. I wouldn't cold call someone unless my wife's life was on the line. Seriously, I am not doing it.

      2. Your budget. Got $10 to your name and the lights are getting shut off tomorrow? Then you better be ready to get out on the streets, pick up the phone, do filers, etc.

      Heck send businesses email.

      But if you have more money then you can host seminars or do direct mail.

      3. Time. Again if you have more time then money you need to get out on the streets, on the phones, etc. But if your time is lacking then you need to find ways to multiply yourself (email, direct mail, etc).

      And of course it takes work. Anything worth living in life is worth working for.

      This was a great post, thanks for the sharing. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, and they should find a way to make money online that builds on their strengths. For people who prefer to work on the Internet alone and dread the idea of cold calling, going door-to-door to businesses, or having deal with demanding small business clients they are better off doing CPA and affiliate marketing. The idea is to make money doing something you enjoy.

      The important thing is that you have to be willing to THINK. Once you begin to understand the principles of marketing and to some degree the technology, you can start to think outside the box on how to generate your own income. Gurus are simply selling the system or idea they came up with that worked for them.

    Yes, it does take work.

    One of the things I am a real stickler for is that something has to work. I learned that from a marketer in Australia.

    This marketer turned me on to systems. The key for me was to find things that worked for my personality and work patterns. Frankly, I don't like having to do things over and over again... like having to babysit a small business owner who has only used coupons to bring people in or just relied on walk-ins.

    Let's face it. It takes just as much time to work with a small business owner that might make you $500 a month as it takes to work with a larger business that can give you $3000 a month for 18 months.

    Using only online methods for marketing don't give you that kind of income. You use the online marketing to get in the door, then you can upsell a bigger package.

    When I go to sit down with a prospect, I know how the business treats customers, I know the marketing they are using, I know what the competitors are doing, I know the strengths and the weaknesses of the business BEFORE I go in.

    Sure, it takes work. But the payoff is OUTSTANDING.

    In addition, when I come to the conclusion of my meeting, the owner almost begs me to work with them and not their competition.

    This happens because I position myself s a white knight coming in to help. I make absolutely sure that a business owner DOES NOT see me as a ordinary commodity.

    Hi, Millard,
    I was attending one seminar of one of the Top Guns in Real Estate and he was telling the story (he was joking during 3.5 hours on the stage) how he became a Millionaire.
    He said " I was trying to run Real Estate business and failed", "I was trying Direct Mail and failed","I was involved into MLM games and had no success at all". Finally my Grandmother died and I inherited 10 Millions of dollars. This is the best illustration of "how to become a Millionaire".lol

    What you say is quite true - not everything works for all people. For some reason, the technique that works best is the one that is most congruent with us as people. No idea why, but I have seen it time and time again. Most times, I can get almost any method to work for me, if I just spend the time working and modifying it `till I get results.

    As we used to say in my network marketing days, there's always the "story behind the story". A lot of times people share a method and the crazy success they had with it because it's a great story, but they forget to tell us the story behind the story, what it is that made this method work for them.

    Not everyone will be successful at one method and I think in this industry we are very guilty of spouting off that anyone can be successful doing things just like I did them. Bull. There's no other profession in the world that claims that anyone can do it, everything requires a different skill set and there is nothing wrong with you having a different skill set than I do.

    I read this great book called Strength Finder. I highly recommend it. It says that we've all been trained to believe that we can do anything so we work on strengthening our weaknesses, when in reality we'd get better results if we left our weaknesses alone and focused on our strengths. So the key is to find out what your strengths are and leverage them in your business.

      Playing to our strengths is what it is all about.

      When I was in the performing industry(I was a comedy magician), I tried close-up, I did mentalism, I did school show, I did birthday parties, I did illusion shows, I did walk around restaurant work... I did just about everything. Finally, I realized that i was good in a couple or areas... I focused on those two areas only. Then I got a lot more work.

      In the business community, you start to learn what works for you, both online and offline.

      You cannot be all things to all people.

      If you are great at closing sales, do that, and let someone else do the web stuff. If you can created awesome websites, but shrink at talking to people... hire someone to make the sales and you work behind the scenes.

      The key is to find what you are good at and do that.... hire someone to fill your weak spots. Don't have any cash? Do a joint venture and share profits.

      There is ALWAYS a way to get things done.

        My limited success with offline marketing encouraged me to focus more efforts on online marketing. Offline, I wrote a 26-page report on writing articles that are based on personal experience and marketing them to magazines. wrote a sales letter, and set the price for each report at $9.95, placed a tiny classified ad in Home Business magazine.

        The results weren't bad -- I earned over one hundred dollars through the course of 2009. I know, one hundred dollars isn't much, but a little something is better than nothing.

        Interestingly, the report is still selling offline, but isn't doing so well on my website.

        At this point, I haven't given up. I now have a better idea of my strengths and what I would really like to market online.

        I think that a combination of two strategies along the same lines, ie., selling reports, could generate some good money. I'm keeping track of my efforts' success and if things really go well, I'll write a report in the near future.

    2) Internet Marketing

    3) Dating Marketing

    etc.

    Most things are sold on "do what I do and you'll succeed," where I think more things need to be sold as "understand WHY this worked, and make it work for you"

    You are so right.

    I was at a large seminar where a girl was brought up for making a tremendous amount of sales. later found out she was the mayor's daughter and went to everyone in town... course everyone bought because it was, after all the mayor's daughter!

    The things I do won't work for everyone, but you can learn to throw out the sticks and keep the meat.

    This somehow reminds me of situations even in my favourite activity of bowling.

    On observing a top bowler make strike after strike and spare after spare, many non-bowling observers can't help but carry the thought that 'bowling is easy, it's just a matter of hitting the pins with that ball".

    Millard, great post. I know that these offline-online gurus have been hyping and exaggerating things quite a bit. If you have little or no affiliations in the real business world, I just find it hard to believe that people would readily fork over $10,000-$20,000 of their money after hearing a 1-2 hour presentation. I think you're spot on about relationships and trust having to be developed first. I believe there's very little chance of the average Joe walking into a business for the first time, chatting up the owner, and then walking away with a $1500 check or more for web services...very, VERY unlikely!

      I believe you guys have misunderstood one point that's very real in offline marketing. I don't learn this dirty secret on the book. I got it 'on the street'.

      If you just started in offline marketing, remember that offline requires lots of money... to grease the elbow with someone who has the money and is willing to help you.

      You cannot just mail this and that and hope for respond as told in the direct marketing books.

      Money attracts money, and it begets moneys. Sometimes, you've to go so low to give money so that you can make future money. It's just simple as that.

      If I'm wrong about it, then why certain new kids on the IM field are paying a fortune for seminars just to follow and meet up with the top guys?

      Once hook up with a top dog, the rest is very easy.

      As for the dirty secret that the gurus don't tell you... it may be they feel ashamed of telling you their 'dirty' beginning.

      Well, I'm not ashamed of telling you this. Because that's how I "paid" top bucks to hook up with an authority in antique business.

    Cheers for your open honesty,

    When I first tried the whole offline thing, I created a business name, website, got a phone, etc. I mailed out 100 letters using copy I got from someone, and got ZERO calls back.

    I got frustrated and stopped. Several months later I got more serious and dug deeper. Now I do this full time and have several clients, one of them paying me $1K a month just for SEO services

    The point, don't give up! Don't expect to mail a simple letter and have it knock down your door. This is a real business, but it also takes real effort.

    Trust me on this one.

    I think a problem that aspiring people have is that they lack the confidence and also experience to be able to walk in a business and walk out with a handsome check.

    Realistically, unless you either have prior sales experience or are incredibly lucky, you aren't going to hit a big payday the first time you try this. I think that some salespitches can lead people to seeing the bar as perceivably high.

    Walking away with your first client, regardless of what they pay, is huge. It means you are being paid to do this! Do you have any idea how long it takes most people to make their first DOLLAR online?

    Start small, get your feet wet, and work your way up. The sky is the limit and before you know it you'll be able to impress those big fish

    Matt hit the nail square on the head here....start small, build your business, build your experience, build your mindset....

    So many who are just entering or are thinking of entering the Offline Marketing arena see thread after thread with high dollar claims.....they start thinking that it's like that for everyone & it's not....most of those banking high value clients are ones with years of experince...they've earned the right to be in that position. It's takes time, a lot of hard work, proper mindset & commitment to reach those levels....

    I applaude those who have advanced their business to those levels....
    I also applaude those who are starting out...going through the growing pains...

    Those just starting out need to realize that this is a business...they need to commit to that....nothing will just be handed to you...you reap what you sew...take time to learn your craft...

    Businesses take time to build....like any business, it needs a strong, solid foundation....the stronger the foundation, the higher you can build on-top of it.....Those businesses that rush in, skip steps & cut corners only weaken their efforts & are usually the ones who fall first....

    Unfortunately, there will be those who doubt Offline marketing works because they do not see immediate results. Where is the foundation they are suppose to be building? It's still underground...it's not visible...so they think there is no progress.

    Plan your business....start small, build your experience, build your mindset....
    This does work for those who commit & apply themselves.....gain the confidence, the experience...the proper mindset that is needed to advance your business to the next level....High value clients will come in time...you have to prepare yourself for that day...

    They call it the "Ladder of Success"......how do the successful one's get to the top? One Rung at a Time!!

  • An excellent post. Your observations are relevant and useful, even if they might upset a few people. But it's great that you took the time to relay your personal experiences, instead of some untested theories or methods. I think most internet marketers who try to go after the offline 'brick-and-mortar' customers will be rudely awakened. Well, at least the ones who haven't read what you have to say.

    You are so right... Most of the big moneymakers add a unique touch to a product which is so misunderstood by many of the marketers out there. I used to give free lectures in the past, partnering with other business people, and just deliver free content to show them I knew what I was talking about. Always worked.

    Millard, great post about the real truth behind offline marketing. In order to be able to cash those big checks, there's simply no substitute for some type of face to face contact. Unless you're already some big name in offline marketing and your reputation precedes you, no business is going to hand you $2000+ checks without some type of actual face to face meeting first, period! If you want to start off with a bang in offline marketings and want to get those big paychecks fast, you had better be prepared to do a seminar/training session and/or meet the prospect in person for a one to one conversation!

    If folks would just talk to other people to get started, it would be a lot easier.

    I've got a confession to make... When I was performing, I was terrified of people. Many times during a performance and especially when I was doing close up magic, I was freaking that people would figure out what I was doing!

    I HAD to FORCE myself to TALK to people! Once I found out that people wouldn't bite me or that they weren't going to string me up when I made a mistake, it got easier.

    I FINALLY figured out in "Offline Marketing" that I just needed to go somewhere where I felt comfortable and TALK to people... ABOUT ANYTHING OTHER THAN MARKETING.

    If I had rapport, then I asked, "How's business?" Then went on to provide some tips.

    I get more business at restaurants, parties, golf courses, and other recreational places than ALL the "Marketing" I've ever done.

    Even if you just get a few bucks starting out, you can grow, get referrals, and go full time.

    Do what works for you!
