How I Just Closed My First Offline Marketing Deal.

I'm a little giddy right now. I just got home from my first attempt to close an offline client for my internet marketing skills. I did it a little differently then the normal sales technique.

I've been reading a great book "How come THAT idiot's rich and I'm Not?" by Robert Shemin. It has a lot about thinking outside the box when you approach something. So, that's exactly what I did.

Instead of approaching the business like a salesman trying to sell my services, I came with a different approach. If you've ever managed a store, you know that when people ask for the manager it's not an enjoyable thing. I knew this because at one time I managed a retail store. I hate being that guy that no one wants to talk to, but I wanted to talk to the person in charge right away. I thought why not come in as someone they want to be speaking to instead of someone they are trying to avoid.

A few days ago, I saw a job posting on craigslist for a local business that was in one of the markets I thought I could easily bring more business for with online efforts. So, I went ahead and applied for a job there. I made up a resume that was made specifically to get their attention. I needed them to set up an interview with me. Luckily, I have quite a bit of sales experience and could give them true events. I would of fibbed if I had to just for the interview.

My interview was a couple hours ago. I went into this interview with one thing in mind. I knew they were going to ask me about my past and current jobs. So, I made a "sales pitch" of sorts. When the manager asked me about what I'm doing currently, I went into the "sales pitch". Not so much selling myself, but selling what my skills can do for a business. I made sure to transition naturally and leave things open to keep the manager intrigued. I wanted him to ask me questions, questions, and more questions about what I do to make money on the internet.

It worked like a charm. The manager was more intrigued in what I do for a living rather then normal interview questions. It was almost like he forgot that I was applying for a job. I went on about what I can do for a business with my internet marketing skills and how I was looking into getting into offline businesses.

I made sure to look at their website before hand and see what they were doing for their online presence...it was a crap shoot. I had a list of things I knew already in my head that I could do for their website before I came in, but I made sure to let him ask me questions instead of act like I was selling.

After about an hour of only talking about bringing targeted traffic with internet marketing, he told me to hang on one second. The manager brought over the owner of the store. He said they have been looking into improving their internet marketing approach (since they had none and I already knew this).

I then went into full salesman approach. I gave him what I can do for him, what were the obstacles, why it will work, etc. This small store actually has over 8 stores in the state of Tennessee. I had my contract papers already done by a lawyer friend of mine the other day just in case I close a offline client. The owner signed the papers and handed me a large chunk of change as the upfront fee. We've set up a monthly fee for a 12 month contract.

And, that's how I set up my first offline client only a few hours ago.

Some of you might say it was stupid to not just approach them as a salesman and I risked them thinking I wasn't successful because I was applying for a job. That was just to get my foot in the door. I wanted them to be ready to listen to what I had to say.

I'm so glad I didn't go with the normal approach. I hate selling.

I'm willing to bet most offline consultants didn't have a contract already drawn up by a local attorney before they got their first client (I didn't!). Congratulations Travis!

Wow that's a really cool approach... I think it's better to have them ask the questions rather than to hard sell them

    That's consultive selling at work.

You certainly added a unique twist to land your first client. Unfortunately if that's your only approach going forward you'll be limiting yourself pretty badly.

Your take-away should be the focus on their business at the beginning of the meeting. That's pretty powerful stuff regardless of your initial method of contact.

    Congratulations on your first contract!

HAHA, I am going to give it a few more tries. After I get some good referrals, I won't be so worried about approaching them. I will have proof lol.

I totally see what you're saying here. The reason I came in the way I did is because for one I have 0 experience in the offline market therefor no referrals.

I have recently established many locally targeted keywords with websites to the top of google. I will be contacting all those that are in that service industry about renting the site. Each of the websites are getting 2-8 visitors a day, but they are extremely targeted viewers. 1 client for a plastic surgeon makes my service look might nice haha.

All these approaches are just ways to get my foot in the door. I'm loving this offline market so much right now. I can use my people skills a little more then with my online marketing.

Well done, very interesting approach indeed =)

I love getting clients from Craigslist, it just doesn't get easier than that in my opinion. I also got my very first client from Craigslist.

Well, I don't hear too many new, creative approaches to getting offline clients these days, but you get some serious points for the "fake interview" technique!

    Congrats!

Cool post and great effort. If you can keep doing this (not the approach but get the deals) then that is going to help you.

Let me suggest you something - once you make your current client happy, request them to become a "reference client". That way, you can quote them as your clients (possibly with some ballpark improvement factor caused by your services) and that would immensely help your business.

    Nice work Travis.

Your approach is not what most people think is needed and probably felt good to the other guy too.

I get a lot of business from people coming to me because they either know I'm versatile and can probably do what they need or because someone else told them how I got results for them - I hardly ever approach businesses cold - most businesses see that as desperate and get turned off before you open your mouth.

Your approach is elegant and positions you as their 'lucky find' - nice job, many people could learn from your approach.

    and thanks for sharing it.

Congratulations, Travis, on this completely unique approach. Obviously we can't all do the same thing all the time, and as Kelly Verge said, if that were the only approach then the potential would be limited.

But there must be some way to tweak this so anyone can approach local businesses, other than by simply cold calling, and have a more than evens chance of getting the order. Here are my thoughts.

If I have this right, what you can do, if you want to get into the "helping local businesses with their web site" business, and you don't want to go cold calling (who does?), is to

      1. Find a local business with a crap web site but who seems to offer a good service or product

      2. Research locally targeted keyword phrases and select some relevant ones that include the name of the locality and that get a fair number of hits

      3. Create a sub-directory of your web site and put up a page featuring the business

      4. Write an article or two for content, with the keyword phrases suitably featured

      5. Put an aweber form, both in-line and pop-up, on the page with an inticing offer, e.g. 20 per cent off next purchase

      6. Burn the site to a CD-ROM, put an attractive label on it, and mail it to the business owner with a letter saying you'll call in at a certain time, giving him an option to ring you and re-schedule your visit, and pointing out how this method will increase his profits and customer base better than any other form of advertising

      7. Visit at the appointed time, and ask for the order.

I actually tried this approach (a bit different, but the same idea) and just felt deceptive.

It is awesome that it worked for you, and I actually know of others that this worked for as well, so I am certainly not questioning your method.

I just felt unsettled by it, because it felt deceptive, and this didn't seem to be a healthy start to what I would want to be a long-term business relationship.

I feel way more deceptive when I go in as a salesman personally. I've been around too many sleazy salesmen I guess lol.

I just talked to him naturally and let him investigate what I do.
